DP Daily Prompt: Truth or Dare
I think it is possible to be too honest. My mother said , ‘you must never lie, unless your life is in danger.’ I try to follow it. I also think , honesty is the best policy.
Once the principal of my school asked me to find out, which teacher forgets to turn off the lights in the grade four area before she goes home for lunch.
I asked all the grade four teachers, they all said, they do not forget to turn off the lights, before they leave for lunch, the days they are on duty.
I suddenly realized I never turn off the lights before I left for lunch whenever I was on duty. I also didn’t know this was the rule. I thought the custodian does that.
I went back and said, ‘Mr. Hancock all the teachers said they turn off the lights when they’re on duty.’
I knew I did not do it, I said, ‘Mr. Hancock I’m the only one who does not turn the lights off.’
He looked at me and said,’ No it’s not true.’
‘Yes it is,’ I said.
Mr. Hancock wasn’t upset, he could not believe I’d admit.

not only was it a great thing for you to admit, but honesty does take people back nowadays – isn’t that a sad thing though, that people are surprised by honesty, and acceptance of ones fault? Have a great day!
Thank you, Claudia.
It did surprise him, he didn’t expect me to admit. He actually felt guilty. I don’t know why people are surprised , I expected him to be upset, but he wasn’t.

Dear Ranu,
Thank you for this honest post.
All good wishes,
robert
He said, ‘can you ask who is not turning off the corridor lights?’ I asked all of them, they said, they turn off the lights
when they’re on duty. I knew I wasn’t aware we’re responsible,so I didn’t do it, I thought the custodian was supposed to turn the lights off.
I went back and said it seems I’m the one who doesn’t do it.He was so surprised he said,’NO’.
I knew he’d get upset. I had to tell him I was the culprit. He looked at me. Couldn’t believe what I said, all that came out of his mouth was ,”No”.

Dear Chaman,
Thank you for sharing your mother’s wisdom with us. I absolutely agree.Honesty is very important, no matter what. However, they do say there are exceptions, like your mother added ‘when your life is in danger’. And I once read that in Islam one is allowed to ‘divert the truth’ when its purpose is to smooth over differences.
Much love and light,
Shaidi
Yes dear Shaidi I know thank you.
Your’e welcome.
That’s interesting, and I admire your honesty. I gather from this that you work at a school. You are a teacher or a school adminstrator, perhaps?
A teacher,you are correct.
I would say that this is so funny in an extremely dignified manner 🙂
The principal told me to find out which teacher was not turning off the lights.
The answer he got from me was something he couldn’t believe, he said ,’No’. Yes I said I’m the one
I thought the custodian turns on and off the lights.I couldn’t lie,it would have made me miserable for
a few days. I told the truth,it didn’t hurt. You should have seen Mr. Hancock’s face, he was so embarrassed.
Well you know I wasn’t going to lie when someone up there is watching me.
Ranu
I completely agree with you on this. I have always benefited from honesty. You have to be brave to admit your fault, well done Ranu.
I do believe honesty is the best policy.
