DP Daily Prompts: The Mirror Crack’d

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

You wake up one morning to a world without mirrors. How does your life–from your everyday routines to your perception of yourself — change?

Mirrors are so important in our lives, at least I think they are. They help me look at myself, if I did not have a good rest in the night, it’s not going to lie, it will show how I look and how can I make myself presentable to people I meet through the day.

I’d lose my self-confidence because I do not have that wonderful thing called the mirror helping me make some necessary changes to my face before I see people.

Without a mirror I will lose my self confidence, I know I’ll have to depend on my friends and family, there are times when they’ll hold back the truth to make me feel good.

My perception of myself will definitely change, I’ll no longer want to meet people, I’ll avoid everyone and may not continue with my job.

There are studies conducted by psychologists that support the self-perception theory, demonstrating that emotions do follow behaviors.

First and foremost thing that will play with my emotion is the lack of mirrors, I feel no one can judge me better than I can.If I’m unable to see myself in the mirror, the first thing  I will lose is my confidence, it is very important for me.

365 Writing Prompts: I pledge allegiance

Are you patriotic? What does being patriotic mean to you?

The standard dictionary definition reads,”love for one’s country.”

Stephen Nathanson (1993, 34-35) defines patriotism as involving:

1. Special affection for one’s country.

2. A sense of personal identification with the country.

3. Special concern for the well-being of the country.

4. Willingness to sacrifice to promote the country’s good.

Many think of patriotism as a natural and appropriate expression of attachment to the country in which we were born and raised and of gratitude for the benefits of life on its soil, among its people, and under its laws. They also consider patriotism an important component of our identity.

If someone asks the question,”Are you Patriotic?”

My answer is yes, how do I know I am patriotic, because I feel proud of my country, I am proud to be one of its citizens.

I am sad if my country loses in any competitive games held in the world. I pray for my country to thrive in everything. I’m concerned about its welfare. I am unhappy if someone passes negative comments about my country.

I love living in my country, I have a special affection for it!

365 Writing Prompts: A little sneaky

Are writing prompts a useful exercise, or do you find them to be too limiting and/or hokey?

To me writing prompts are useful as long as they do not suggest knowing about people who write these prompts, I know some use it in a different way and ignore writing about themselves, which is a good thing.

There are a lot of prompts where they want us to write about us, I am tired of doing it. There are a lot of things it can focus on and leave out knowing about people who write these prompts.

By this time I think I have written a lot about myself, anyone reading it will have no trouble writing a biography of me.

It’s time the prompts given to us is something more educational than knowing about us as persons. There are a lot of topics that can help one’s general knowledge.

DP Daily Prompts: Pains and Gains

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

Do you agree with Jane Fonda’s favorite exercise motto,”no pain,no gain?” Is it impossible to to attain greatness without considerable hardship?

I agree with Jane Fonda’s exercise motto, “no pain,no gain?” If we want to be in good shape, we have to work for it, we cannot just will it. We all want to be in good shape, if we do not put in the time to do it we’ll never achieve our goal. She shows how she got into shape by doing the exercise, she didn’t only talk.

Greatness is not easy to achieve without hard work, to be famous one has to work hard and I truly believe in it.

There are people who are famous by their evil deeds. They are hated by everyone, it’s the kind of fame that make them infamous.

song by Sujata, translated and posted by Ranu

Everything written in

the pages of my life is wrong

It is a mistake to think

Spring will show up

in my unfortunate life.

I ask myself where did I live,

where will I go?

I have no answer for it.

It’s wrong for me to think

in my cloudy life

there will be a ray of light .

No one will call me

when I attempt to leave

It is wrong to hope

anyone will remember me.

If I think I’m not alone any more

It will be a mistake.

Everything written in the pages

of my life is a mistake!

DP Daily Prompts: New Dawn

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

How often do you get to ( or have to ) be awake for sunrise? Tell us about what happened the last time you were up so early (or late…)

I wake up every morning before sunrise, we have a prayer which is called “Fajr”, we have to say this prayer before the sun rises.

Since the days are getting shorter I am able to wake up at five, the sun rises after six these days. I need to have plenty of time before sunrise to enable me to wake up wash and prepare for the prayer.

“The Fajr” prayer takes about five to six minutes to finish, I add some extra prayers for my parents, friends and loved ones, in all it takes close to twenty five minutes. If the day is warm I stay up and do some writing. If it is cold like it is today I go back to bed and take a nap.

I leave the bed by seven a.m.

Waking up early is not a problem,if I am late and wake up after sun rise it means I’ve missed my morning prayer, I still pray but there is a difference I begin with words that say I’m late!

You might wonder why I have to be awake before sun rise. It is because I am a Muslim, we have set time for prayers. We pray five times, one is before sunrise called ‘Fajr’, second one is ‘Zuhr’, third is ‘Asr’. fourth is ‘Maghrib’, and the fifth is ‘Isha’.

‘Zuhr’ is when the sun has passed its zenith i.e.,has passed the highest part of the sky and starts to descend towards the west.

‘Asr’ : this lasts from the time the sun turns yellow until sunset.

‘Maghrib’ :  it starts after the time for ‘Asr’ ends, which is when the sun sets.

‘Isha’: It begins immediately after Maghrib ends, which is when the red glow disappears from the sky and lasts till midnight.

365 Writing Prompts: I can’t drive 55

Take the third line of the last song you heard, and make it your post title, and write for fifteen minutes, Go!

Does love mean pain and tears?

I wanted to know from my good friend about love, this is all he talks about. My question was what is love, you do not seem to be happy, yet you tell me you are in love. If it means you are going to be miserable all your life, it is not worth it, think about all the creatures on earth who are not humans, to them to love is to enjoy.

The flower in the garden blooms and looks beautiful, it keeps smiling and eventually withers and scatters when the wind blows.

The moonlight brightens up the sky and the earth, when the time comes for it to leave it happily disappears.

You see the reflection of the stars in the ocean, they  too are spreading their love but are not in pain because they have to leave.

The poet loves everything he sees, he sings with joy,he loves nature, he is never sad to see the moon disappear or the flower to wither, these are facts of life.

My friend heard all this quietly and said there is a difference, the flower, the moon, the stars, and nature, what they lack is feeling, they do not feel hurt when they wither and die.

My case is not the same as them, I feel for the person I love.If she is sad I’m sad too. We have a lot of obstacles in our path, we have parents, relatives and friends who stand in the way of our love.

We have to get their blessing which is not easy to get. We are not free like nature, Rousseau summed it up beautifully, “Man is born free, but everywhere he is in chains.”

Tagore Song: shokhi bhabona kahare bauley Posted and translated by ranu

What is anxiety

what is suffering

You talk about  love day and night.

Does love mean pain and tears

and painful sighs?

Are you happy to surrender,

happiness for pain?

To me everything is fresh and pure

The deep blue sky, the green garden

clear moonlight and soft flowers,

Like me they laugh and they sing.

To them laughter and music

Should continue even,

When  they are dying.

They know not pain and suffering,

They do not crave for them.

A flower blooms and laughs

as it  withers.

The moonlight beams and disappears

The stars sacrifice their light

on the ocean.

Is there anyone happier than me?

Come to me my friend,

My happy heart’s song

Will relieve your pain.

Since you weep every day,

Why don’t you try to forget your pain,

Once and sing with me!

365 writing Prompt: Ready for your close-up

Cast the movie of your life.

My original homeland is Bangladesh. My father was born in a village. It’s name is “ABURKANDI”,it is a small village in Bangladesh.

My father always believed  one should know,his/ her mother tongue before any other language. We were encouraged to speak our mother tongue when we were in the house. My mother tongue is,”BENGALI”. It is spoken in Bangladesh and the Indian states of west Bengal.

I learned Urdu from  neighborhood kids and later learned to read, write and speak it. I learned English in school where the medium of instruction was English.

Later on I learned some French in the university, it happened when I saw a lady in our university. Naturally curious I asked some of my friends who she was, I was told she taught French. I got interested and asked the lady if I could join her class,at first she refused because she had started the course two months ago and didn’t think I could catch up. She gave in when I promised I’d work hard.  I did well according to the teacher.

When I came to Canada, little bit of french I learned in Bangladesh came in handy, I studied the books my husband had. Canada is a bilingual country, we are expected to know both English and French to get a job. I took a few courses to enable me to teach French to the kids in my class, it was only basic French, nothing complicated.

I don’t recall how or why I took an interest in Spanish, I took some correspondence courses in Spanish. I found Spanish easier than French.

I believe if we fail to practice speaking the languages we learn we lose it.

At the moment  I spend my time participating in online courses and blogging. I enjoy both.

DP Daily Prompt: Head Turners

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

We often hear strange snippets of conversation as we walk through public spaces. When was the last time  you overheard so interesting, ridiculous, or disturbing, you really wanted to know what it was all about?

My brother Misbah, was traveling to Comilla from Chittagong, he overheard a passenger telling his friend there was a job opening in one of the Tea Estates.

He told my brother Rafique  about the job opening,  Rafique was looking for a job, he sent an application to the Tea Board. After a few days he received a letter from the boss of the company to come for an interview.

Rafique was delighted, he left Comilla to go to Chittagong for the interview. He met the boss of the company, who received him cordially, after asking him some questions, he was told they will send him a letter if he was selected.

After waiting for a couple of weeks my brother received a letter from the company boss that he was hired for the job!
