365 Writing Prompts: To boldly go…..

An impending new year gives rise to reflection and goal setting. What will your goals for 2015 be? It’s never too early to start thinking about self improvement!

As 2014 is coming to an  end I’m thinking of some of the positive and negative things that I was faced with.

First the positive, it’s a year when I was able to continue with the WordPress prompts. I admit I have learned a lot . I’ve trained my mind to think, I feel I have done a fair job, by this I mean there is room for improvement.

I also enjoyed writing five minute fiction by Lillie. At first I wasn’t sure how it will work out for me, I have a few bloggers who read my stories and write their comments, I am grateful to them, their continued support keeps me motivated.

In the home front my progress is almost nil. I wanted to fix the basement I haven’t been able to do so.

I’m keeping up with the online course, I do run into problems now and then, it’s not the course itself there are other things that are not so enjoyable.

Before 2015 knocks at my door, I’d like to take care of the things that I was unable to do in 2014. I must realize I cannot take care of everything as soon as possible, the moment this thought hits me I’ll do the same as I did in 2014,nothing, it is a lesson I need to learn.

To improve my writing I should put in a lot more time, to do well.

I’m also thinking of utilizing more time to photography. This is one area where I have not done anything to get better.

I intend to continue with the online course and ignore negative things that upset me.

DP Daily Prompt: Calling Uncle Bob

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

Have you ever faced a difficult situation when you had to choose between sorting it out yourself, or asking someone else for an easy fix? What did you choose— and would you make the same choice today?

Yes I faced a difficult situation a few months ago. I was looking for some furniture, I went to a furniture store in the mall to look around. The lady at the store showed me a picture, it looked beautiful I ordered it and paid the whole amount the same day.

When it was delivered I noticed the furniture set   was  different from the one she showed me, I went back to the sales representative and asked her to make arrangements to take the set  out of my house, she took another few days to get it removed.

I went back to her and asked for the refund, she told me she had already refunded the money.Since she did not give me a receipt I wasn’t sure the money was really refunded.  I had used my credit card to pay, I called the credit card company  to find out  if the money was refunded , they checked a few times and they told me it was not repaid  yet.

Finally after two months the company reimbursed me, I was so annoyed I made up my mind never to buy anything from them. They are unreliable and their staff is incompetent.

365 Writing Prompts:Simply Irresistible

Tell us about the favorite dish or food that  you simply cannot turn down.

My favorite dish is biriyani, it is a casserole dish. It has a fine  mixture of ingredients, the most important is  beef, close second is basmati rice, followed by potatoes, tomatoes, onions, yoghurt, clarified butter and all those spices that enhance the flavor of this awesome casserole.

It can be cooked in the oven or on  top of the stove, the spices give it the aroma and once it’s done, it is difficult to wait!

I cooked this several times for my daughter’s friends, they love it a lot.

DP Daily Prompt: Envelope Pushers

pad2014-s.png (308×60) When was the last time you took a risk(big or small), and pushed your own boundaries– socially, professionally, or otherwise? Were you satisfied with the outcome? A few years ago my daughter and I were invited to a get-together party in a friend’s house. There were a lot of people there, food was served I was waiting my turn to get some food, my daughter was ahead of me, when she was about to get the food, one of our old acquaintance stopped her and asked  some unexpected questions. I knew nothing about it until we were ready to get into the car, my daughter told me about it and made up her mind never to attend these parties. I was angry, this person always looks for an opportunity to embarrass us. When we got home I dialed his number, he was not at home, I left a message to call me next morning, when my call wasn’t returned by 9 am, I called again, I was firm I told him he must never harass me or my daughter in the presence of strangers. I reminded him if there was anything he wanted to know , he should ask me directly. He tried to make excuses for his behavior but I did not let him. The same person has been doing this kind of irritating thing since we met him, I attempted to stop him, my husband would not let me. This time I felt he had crossed the limit I must prevent him from being a jerk. I was satisfied with the outcome, I was never bothered by him again! k: https://sabethville.wordpress.com/2014/11/24/dp-daily-prompt-

365 Writing Prompts: Close call

Tell us about a bullet you’re glad you dodged– when something awful almost happened, but didn’t.

It happened to me once when I was on my way to my uncle’s house in Dhaka,it was a late afternoon, I had hired an auto rickshaw because it was faster than the regular rickshaw.

I noticed the driver kept stopping pretending there was something wrong, after the third time, I was disgusted it would be dark soon, so I made the decision I’d hire the regular rickshaw to continue my journey.

I told the driver he had wasted enough time I wasn’t interested to let him stop this many times. I got off and got the regular rickshaw to go to my uncle’s house.

On the way the rickshaw driver told me,”You’ve made the right decision to change, that auto rickshaw driver is a crooked guy, who knows what was on his mind?”

I breathed a sigh of relief, I had dodged the bullet, “God is always helping me I quietly whispered!”

Fiction: Irritation

Lillie McFerrin Writes

Anne wanted  to  host a party  for her friend Cecilia and husband Harry as a going away present, she called her cousin Francine to help her organize the event .

Francine took the responsibility of decorating  the house, Anne got busy making a list of foods she’d serve, the only problem she was facing was her aunt Millie who found out  about the party, and zoomed in out of nowhere, insisting she had the most amazing idea for the party.

Aunt Millie was not the most ideal person for Anne and Francine to get help from, the situation was tricky they couldn’t say no, but didn’t want her presence either, they knew she was disliked by most of the people in their friends’ circle.

Anne and her cousin were discussing about the seating arrangement, Anne thought her friend Sylvia was a good friend of Cecilia and Harry, so she decided to put her beside Cecilia.

Sylvia was one person Aunt Millie disliked, when she heard her name and found out she was invited, Aunt Millie was so furious she stomped out of the house!

DP Daily Prompt:Spinning Yarns

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

What makes a good story teller, in your opinion? Are your favorite story tellers people you know or writers you admire?

In my estimation,a good story teller is one who can maintain the attention of his audience till the end of a story.

My favorite story tellers are writers I admire. One of them is Roald Dahl, his stories are meant for children, but adults love them too. One good example is me.

I read many stories written by him, the best one is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The kids I taught were so enthralled by it every day the first thing they said  was , can you  read Charlie and the  chocolate factory?

His other equally fascinating book is ,”James and the Giant Peach.”I think I liked this one more than the kids.

My second favorite author is, Gordon Korman, the titles he chose for his books was extraordinary,l he has the gift. Who wouldn’t be interested if the title was ,”I Want To Go Home”, or “This can’t be happening  at Macdonald Hall.”

Gordon Korman wrote his first book when he was in grade seven, his teacher asked the students to write an essay in class, Gordon wrote ,”This Can’t be happening at Macdonald Hall.” The teacher loved it so much ,he told him to get it published. Scholastics Book Company published it,instantly Gordon became famous.

There are other story writers  I admire, but these two are my favorite!

365 Writing Prompts: I have confidence in me

Are you good at what you do? What would you like to be better at?

I think I am good at teaching, I know that because I was able to keep my jobs. I was liked by the students I taught. My superiors did not doubt my ability.

I really would like to be good at languages, maybe I’m not serious enough, could be the reason why I did not get better at French. I did a few courses in Spanish, my teacher liked my progress and encouraged me to continue but I did not, although I liked Spanish better than French, I think Spanish is easier it doesn’t have silent letters like  in French.

Right now I am doing online courses, to learn about Iqbal the poet and philosopher, I’m enjoying it a lot and I  want to do well in it.

I am told I am doing quite well in the course, my goal is to do better than, “quite well.”

DP Daily Prompts: Grateful and Guilty

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

Whether it’s a trashy TV show ,extra pulpy fiction, or nutrient free candy, write a thank-you note to your guiltiest guilty pleasure.

I will write a thank-you note to the makers of Godiva chocolate.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I feel the urge to thank-you for producing the “Godiva Chocolate.” They are so tasty that with every bite I think of you, how much pleasure these give me. I do realize they are devoid of nutritional qualities which is so essential for our health and well-being, but the amount of satisfaction I get when I eat it,  is beyond anything else.

I know my sugar along with my weight will rise to extreme level, I have no one to blame but myself for giving in to temptation.

Keep producing them, the fact that the calorie chart is at the back of the box, is enough to alert us, how much is too much.

You have done your job, we the consumers will have to keep in mind how many empty calories we are consuming to make us aware of the health hazards.

Lastly I am grateful for the extraordinary chocolates.

Yours truly,

An obliged customer

365 Writing Prompts: Playtime

Do you play in your daily life? What says “Playtime” to you?”

To answer your question I’d like to quote a poem by William Henry Davies.

The title of the poem is : Leisure

What is this life if full of care ,

We have no time to stand and stare.

No time to stand beneath the boughs,

And stare as long as sheep or cows.

No time to see when woods we pass,

Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see in broad daylight,

Streams full of stars, like skies at night.

No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,

And watch her feet how they can dance.

No time to wait till her mouth can,

Enrich that smile her eyes began.

A poor life this if, full of care,

We have no time to stand and stare.

Yes I feel the same as the poet, playtime, I have none, I do not have the pleasure of playing, my work piles up everyday because I’m unable to get it done at the end of the day.

Unfortunately I cannot waste any minute staring at anything!
