Daily Prompts: Trick or Trick

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

Let’s imagine it’s Halloween, and you just ran out of candy. If the neighborhood kids (or anyone else ,really) were to scare you, what trick would they have to subject you to?

This one is tough. I’ve been thinking about it, but I’m not sure what they can pull that moment to scare me.

There are more kids than the candies I had. I tell them, ‘I’m sorry I ran out of candies.’

What kind of trick can they devise that second is hard to tell. If they plan,  ahead of time before they present themselves  at my door; what can they do; I cannot think of it.

Daily Prompts: Imaginary Friend

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

Many of us had imaginary friends as young children. If your imaginary friend grew up alongside you, what would his/her/its life be like today? ( Didn’t have one? Write about a non-imaginary friend you haven’t seen since childhood).

I did not have imaginary friends, I was busy playing with my siblings, there was never a moment when I could think of imaginary friends. If I wasn’t busy with my siblings, I was doing chores for my Mom.It hardly left enough time for me to imagine anything.

I had a friend in school in the lower grades. She was quite nice, but her attendance in school, left a lot to be desired. Her parents were wealthy, she was the only child. I presume they didn’t care much about her education.

During our summer vacation,  my Dad passed away. I didn’t get  a chance to say  goodbye to my friend.

We were in the process of leaving the city to go to Bangladesh, my parents’ original home. I  lost contact with her, but wondered what she was doing.

My guess is she may not have continued her education after high school. Her parents  probably were anxious to see her married, if nothing else she could produce grand kids for them.

My non-imaginary friend I think is happily married, she has multiple servants at her beck and call; she certainly has no time to think of her childhood friend.

Daily Prompts:Bonus Assignment

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

Do you keep a notebook? Good.Jot down the first thought you have upon waking, whether or not it’s coherent.

The above was a bonus assignment given to us  yesterday for this morning.

I was awakened by my alarm. I was trying very hard not to  leave my bed to get ready for prayer this one day. I figured God would forgive me if I said my prayer after sunrise.

My mind split into two, there was a tug of war going on between them. One said, “Yes, Ranu, God will forgive you if you say your prayer after sunrise.”

The other the conscientious one kept buzzing, ” No He won’t so get up and get ready for prayer!”

I was already awake and could not bear to listen to the two minds, besides guilt overtook me and reluctantly I left my bed to get ready for prayer. In a way I’m pleased,   I  knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep while the good and the bad  mind were continuing to argue.

This happens to be what I thought when I woke up this morning.

Daily Prompts: Comedy of Errors(and bonus assignments !)

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

Murphy’s Law says, “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.” Write about a time everything did- fiction encouraged here, too!

Bonus Assignments: do you keep a notebook next to your bed? Good. Tomorrow morning jot down the first thought you have upon waking, whether or not it’s coherent.

Yesterday I got ready to go to the medical center for my flu’ shot. I did not check the bus schedule or the temperature outside, not a clever thing to do.Murphy’s Law means to be aware and I was not, I was sure I was going out at the right time to catch the bus.In my mind the bus would arrive at 12.30 pm.

There was no sign of the bus, it was an extremely cold and windy day. The bus schedule was what I thought it was, but it arrived at 1 pm.

I boarded the bus hoping the next one would be there (MUN Centre) when I arrive. There was no sign of the bus and I had to bear with the extreme cold temperature. When I saw there was another bus not the one I was waiting for, I went over, asked the bus driver about route no. 14, she told me  I’d have to wait another five minutes. This was after forty five minutes of waiting. I checked  my watch five minutes had passed. I kept wondering if going on a day like this was worth the flu’ shot I was going to get.

I arrived at the health centre at 1.55 pm, my appointment was at 2 pm. I was called in after a few minutes of waiting.

I checked the bus schedule, it said 2.30 pm , I was delighted I’d reach home by 3 pm. But the bus arrived at 3.45 pm which meant I was freezing outside.

I did not dress warm enough, I really could not tell how cold it was in my warm home.

The last bus I took was at 4.05 pm. The bus driver sat and waited for God knows whom. When he finally  decided to start moving I breathed a sigh of relief. It took about fifteen minutes to reach my stop. My watch indicated it was  4.30 pm I got off and hurried home. By this time  I was cold, hungry and tired!

I had gone for flu’ shots before, I did not have this much trouble getting the right bus.

Daily Prompts: Fright Night

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

What’s the last thing you’re most scared to do? What would it take to get you to do it?

Winter to me can be very scary, the blizzard, ice on the pavement, driveway and  streets; keeps me from going out. I’m contented to stay home, rather than walk on ice.

The news on the radio about slippery roads and that the citizens should be careful, frightens me. My biggest fear is falling and breaking my arms or legs, this fear in me is the reason why I prefer to stay  indoors.

I cannot believe there is anything that can possibly make me walk on ice unassisted.

Daily prompts: He’s( She’s) So Fine

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

What was it that drew you to your significant other? Their blue eyes? Their ginger countenance? Their smile? Their voice?

None of the above, I’d say to begin with. Actually mine was an arranged marriage, I therefore didn’t get the opportunity to know if his smile, voice, or ginger countenance was the reason why I chose him.

Blue eyed men or women I  haven’t seen in my world. They are in abundance in European or North American countries.

I was drawn to his world by his cousin’s wife. She knew me, when my husband’s parents asked her to help out. She must have wondered why her, why not his brothers or sister’s in-law.

She was given this job of go-between because she taught in a girl’s college, so there must be some eligible women around, it was a task she gladly accepted.

Somehow I showed up in her mind’s eye, without wasting any time she landed in the school where I was teaching.

To me she was an acquaintance, I saw her once or twice, I was completely baffled to see her. At first I didn’t know who she came to see. When she came to me directly and said, “Hey Ranu, how are you?”

I looked at her and queer thoughts ran in my mind, when was she more than an acquaintance to me? Why is she so friendly?

The time was not in my favor, I had to pretend I knew her well. Next thing she drew me aside and told me, she wanted to speak to me.

In the meantime my colleagues and my school principle were trying to find out who this strange woman was and why was she there?

She at once spit out why she had come to see me. Her question was whether I’d be interested to marry him.

If it was my old outspoken self I would have reacted differently, my mother’s constant reminders to behave myself popped its head, I was speechless. I told her to see my older sister. She wasted no time to get the ball rolling.

Within two weeks I got married, my husband took me to his village to meet his parents. My in-laws were delighted to see their favorite son married!

Daily Prompts: If You Leave

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

Life is a series of beginnings and endings. We leave one job to start another,we quit cities, countries or continents for a fresh start; we leave lovers and begin new relationships. What was the last thing you contemplated on leaving? What were the pros and cons? Have you made up your mind? What will you choose?

It seems to be the history of our life, we leave one city to go to another for jobs, education, and better life.

I’ve gone through all of these, now I feel I’ve accomplished everything. I needed a secure place to settle down. The decision was made jointly by my husband and I.

We realized our life of roaming around like a gypsy was over, we needed some stability. Our children were growing up, we needed to live in a city where higher studies was available for them. We’ve done the best we could, our kids were happy to be in a place where there was more than a supermarket. There were other means of entertainment.

We did not want our kids to study all day and sleep all night. As we are aware: “All work no play makes Jack a dull boy.”

We didn’t forget all the fingers in our hand are not the same size, likewise all our children will not do well in studies.

We were confronted with this problem, we had to be contented, knowing we did our best.

Then there was the subject of health, we needed to be in a city, where there were facilities to cope with any kind of health issue.

We were satisfied knowing the physicians were capable of handling major health issues.

We’ve therefore chosen to live in a city where everything is available, i.e, good schools, awesome restaurants, capable health care people and an efficient means of transportation!

Tagore song : Pagla hawaar baadol dinay, posted and translated by ranu

Mori aushombhauber paye matha kootay

This cloudy monsoon day of crazy wind,

Has awakened my insane heart.

Somewhere completely unknown

Where there are no paths,

It  runs off for no apparent reason.

Will it reach the entrance of its home some day?

Will it ever return, there is an echo,

it will not, no it will not.

All the walls have crashed.

On an  evening’s intoxicating rain,

I question myself, which great one’s follower am I?

In my dream I see  drunkards dancing.

Today I want what I should not ask for.

Where will I get what is unattainable?

I know I will not get it,

even if I die banging my head for the impossible.

Daily Prompts: Express Yourself !

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

Do you love to dance, sing, write, sculpt, paint, or debate? What’s your favorite way to express yourself, creatively?

There are so many choices, yet I cannot find one that is my favorite. It’s not anyone’s fault I didn’t do so well in any of the above.

I did not get a chance to learn dancing. I did like singing, but was told no, ‘you are not allowed to learn to sing, you will neglect your studies.’

Sculpt, paint or debate were never my favorite.

The only thing left is,’Write.’ I’m trying my best to use this skill creatively.

I’ve tried my hand in poetry, it didn’t go so well.

I have to be contented writing longer  fiction and five sentence fiction.

Creative writing is not as easy as one would think. I do try to express myself as best as I can, success however is not showing up in my writing.

Someday in the near future there might be people who would say, “You know Ranu you are doing okay.”

I’m waiting for that day to come sooner rather than later!

Daily Prompts: Pride and Joy

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

What’s your most prized possession?

Material possessions I probably have more than enough.Whenever something catches my fancy, I tend to buy it if it is affordable. I cannot consider any of these things as my prized possession.

I think of friends, family, acquaintances, they are nice to have but I’m not sure they are my prized possession.

My most prized possession is good health. If I didn’t have good health, family, friends or acquaintances will shy away from me. I do not blame them.

Human nature is complex it’s not easy to interact with someone who is ill. Yes we all have compassion but when we witness it for a considerable length of time. The compassion turns to boredom, we start distancing ourselves with someone who is not well.

A healthy body and mind is the most prized possession for me, everything else is secondary!
