What is the 11th item on your bucket list?

I haven’t thought of a bucket list yet. Let me make a list of things I’d like on my bucket list before this year is  over.

My number one item is to read twenty-five books in twelve months. I am about to start my fourth book, I’m doing well for number one.

Number two is clean up my basement, sadly there is nothing to report now.

Third item is to make sure the felines stop whining. A whiny cat is a terrible bore.

Fourth is I should do something nice for my neighbor, he was kind enough to shovel the end of my driveway.

Number five start working on the limerick challenge for this week.

Number six is get some training in window shopping, I’m always buying, this needs to be curtailed.

Seven is my lucky number, I must do something nice for me, I haven’t decided yet what will make me happy.

Eight is the number which tells me about my weight, it isn’t that bad, I tell my friend “Wait!”

Nine reminds me of fine, I must return the books on time.

Ten out of ten should always be my score on a test.

Eleventh item I feel must be a memorable one, “I must forgive the person who went out of line, for to err is human to forgive Divine!”

This is my post for today folks. 🙂

Daily Prompts: My favorite

pod-2016-sm.png (308×60)

What’s the most time you’ve ever spent apart from your favorite person? Tell us about it.

My favorite person in my childhood was my Dad, the times I spent apart from him was when I went to school and my Dad went to work. Besides when he came home, he had to rest and I’d wait for him to relax in our front garden where I’d sit on the grass and talked to him about many things, most of the time it used to be questions, which he’d answer sometimes, other times, he’d read his newspaper, which meant, “Ma I’m busy.”

When he passed away, I had more than one person to spend my time with, they were my siblings.

When I moved to another city to pursue my education, and I was living in a residence, I spent time with my classmates. On weekends I visited my uncle in the city, he was a very nice man, he’d ask me about my classmates, who they were, what did their father do for a living. This question confused me, I told him I didn’t know  anything about their father.

He cautioned me about these mysterious friends, who he thought might not be good for me to hang out with. I found the girls friendly, I was happy I got to spend time with them, it helped me to recover from homesickness which troubled me a lot in the beginning.

Now a days my favorite companion is my book, I spend hours reading it. I only stop when it’s time for my prayer, or to feed the felines or eat when it’s lunch time. Sometimes I spend time away from my book when my eyes start to be painful or when I suddenly feel the need to take a nap.

I was relieved when I finished reading, “Atlas Shrugged,” it was a wrong companion I chose. I’ve learned my lesson, now my book companion will be chosen very carefully.

I’m reading one now, Paulo Coelho is the author. I’ve completed reading more than half of the book. I’ll be ready for the next one hopefully tomorrow.

A book I feel is the type of companion I like, I put it aside when I’m tired, I don’t have to do anything to please it, unlike a real person who can be demanding, who expects me to be pleasant all the time, which is not possible for a human being like me.

Daily Prompts: YAWN

pod-2016-sm.png (308×60)

What bores you?

I very easily get bored, when I invite friends to dinner at six and they come at eight, the two hours that I have to wait, makes me very irritable. There are many reasons, the food that I cooked to serve at six, has to wait for the guests. When I have to wait for two extra hours, the food gets cold, it loses its flavor and the most important part is we are hungry, but cannot eat because our guests haven’t arrived.

Another place I’m bored is at the doctor’s office. When my appointment is at 10.30 am I leave the house to go to  the doctor’s office at 9.45 am, so I’m there on time.  If I’m seen by the doctor at 12.30, it means I’ve lost half of my day. Some doctor’s office have magazines to entertain the patients, but when I check I find they are at least three years old. There are pages missing, they are in poor condition and are not fit to read. I end up sitting and hoping I’ll be seen soon.

Book Review: Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand

Atlas Shrugged is a book I finished reading yesterday. I started reading it more than a week ago. I entered the challenge of reading 25 books this year.

The above was my second book. It has 1168 pages, there are more than 588 words on each side. The spaces between the lines are very narrow, as a result I read the same line twice. You could say it’s my mistake and not the author’s .

I found there was a lot of repetition and there were long speeches in the book which were almost more than ten pages.  No one recommended this book to me I heard about the writer and was curious. I bought the book and felt the only way I’ll make myself read it was  if I enter a challenge.

Now that I’ve finally read the book, I’d be honest and admit I will never read a book which took so much of my time, in return I learned very little from it.

Daily Prompts: Witness Protection

pod-2016-sm.png (308×60)

When you do something scary or stressful_ bungee jumping, public speaking etc. – do you prefer to be surrounded by friends or by strangers? Why?

If it is something scary like bungee jumping, I’d prefer to be surrounded by friends, in case I need help, my friends will come to my rescue, I hope. Strangers may walk away. I say this because they may not want to be involved if it is a question of moving me to a nearest health clinic.

Public speaking I won’t mind the opinions of strangers, the fact that they do not know me they will be truthful about my performance. Friends however will not, they will try to consider my feelings and may praise my performance even if it is not praiseworthy.

Daily Prompts: Learning Style

pod-2016-sm.png (308×60)

What’s your learning style? Do you prefer learning in a group and in an interactive setting? Or one-on-one? Do you retain information best through lectures or visuals, or simply by reading books?

I prefer learning by an  interactive setting, one- on- one not so much. About one-on -one, I have reservations.

I think I was in third standard, I had a bit of problem with some science questions. My test was next day, I asked my eldest brother if he could help me, well he was more than pleased to offer me help. I do not recall exactly what it was, I only remember it was something about Physics. My brother explained it, but he repeated it so many times I thought he must think I’m stupid, I excused myself and said, “Dada(Bengali word for eldest brother), I understand please don’t repeat anymore.”

Then he asked, “what’s the next question?”

To avoid another round of repetition I lied and said there’s no more I understand the rest.

Next day after school my brother was waiting for me, he asked, “How did you do in the test?”

“I got five out of five in the question you helped me with, but two out of five in the second one which I read by myself,” I said.

“See,” he said, you did not let me explain it.”

“I know,” I said, “but you repeat it so many times.”

I learn through lectures if the Prof. is not reading straight from the book, his voice drags, and he has no intonation to keep me interested.

Visuals are a very good way of learning which I’m doing now when I learn the three languages i.e, Farsi, Spanish and French.I have some background in Spanish and French, but none in Farsi.

I also learn well when I read books.

Daily Prompts: Reason to Believe

pod-2016-sm.png (308×60)

In Reason to Believe, Bruce Springsteen sings ,”At the end of every hard-earned day/people find some reason to believe.”  What’s your reason to believe?

My reason to believe,is if I’m sincere at what I’m doing, I’ll be successful. I mean I’ll feel better when my effort is appreciated.

In my childhood, I thought all my efforts at being helpful was always sneered at as if I was putting on a show and nothing I did or said was ever taken seriously by the crowd around me. It was a kind of disappointment I failed to grasp.

What I’m going to relate are trivial things, but back then , I felt wonderful.Once my brother who worked in the tea gardens, came home with a  suitcase full of things, he handed it to me and said, “Ranu this is for you.”

I opened the suitcase and lo and behold, I found all kinds of goodies, chocolates, candies, biscuits in attractive boxes. I shared all of it with my other siblings.

One day I asked the same brother, every time you come you bring a suitcase full of good stuff, and say,”Ranu this is for you.”

What will you say if I keep it all and decide not to share?

He had a broad grin on his face and replied, “I know you won’t do it.”

I felt so good realizing, my brother trusts me.

One of the things I value most is trust, I try not to disappoint anyone. When I see people faking, it breaks my heart.

After a  hard days work, we do need assurance that we did well, it makes us feel happy to know our work is appreciated.

There was a young man  from  Goad

Who claimed he could transform into  a Toad

His friends from near and far

Came to see his magic in a car

But alas! their car broke down on the road! 🙂

let’s use some magic,

I swear it won’t be tragic

Daily Prompts: B+

pod-2016-sm.png (308×60)

Write about what you did last weekend, as though you were a music critic reviewing a new album.

When I think of weekends I think of grocery shopping. My favorite store is Costco, I am a member so I try to take advantage, I buy food items that  are much cheaper than the regular grocery stores,I mean the Supermarkets, if people realized how the supermarkets rob us, more of them would become members. Membership fees is 52 dollars for regular members and 100 dollars for Executive members. One day I realized if I become an executive member I’d have a lot more privileges than a regular member so I changed from regular to executive.

I must be sounding like a person who is trying to promote the privileges of shopping at Costco. It’s nothing like that, I’m thinking loudly of the benefits I get when I shop there.

Last weekend I checked the book I was reading and was kind of discouraged when I noticed I had only read 422 pages out of 1168 pages, I therefore started reading it to hurry up. I entered the challenge to read 25 books, since I started on the fourth day of January 2016, I’ve read one book and am on my second book. I feel discouraged that I haven’t yet finished reading the second book. I still have over 200 pages left.

I was thinking about my brother who talked about fasting in North America from dawn to dusk,we fast for sixteen hours in summer whereas in other countries in Asia almost half of that, what he was trying to say was, we deserve to get credit for two days, I grinned and said, “May be since you feel so strongly about it, you should send a petition to God, because humans cannot do it.”

Likewise I’m trying to mention is, an average length of a book is around 400 pages, mine has 1168 pages, “can I not  get credit for at least two books instead of one?”

But then again other readers will say,I should have picked the books that have an average of 400 pages. I know I’d lose this argument. But I must admit the book has a lot of pages but it’s a grand book. Do you think I deserve B+ when I finish reading it?

Last weekend I also learned some Spanish and Farsi, I think I may get B+ for my effort,”what do you think, yes or may be not? 😦

Lahore: My favorite city

Lahore the most impressive city in Pakistan and inhabited by friendly people.

I was fortunate to visit this place to study B.Ed., I lived for a year and had the best experience of my life. My classmates were the best I’ve ever met.

Jehangir_Tomb3.jpg (1024×768)

History of Lahore: It is the second largest city district in Pakistan. It is originally the largest city of the Punjab region. Since its creation it has changed hands from Hindu,Buddhist, Greek,Muslim, Sikh, and British rule to becoming the cultural capital and the heart of modern day Pakistan.

A mythological legend based on oral traditions, states that Lahore was named after Lava , which means” particle,” son of the Hindu god Rama who supposedly found the city.

Ptolemy celebrated astronomer and geographer mentions in his geographia, a city called Labakla, situated between the Indus river and Patna.

The oldest authentic document about Lahore was written anonymously in 982 and is called Hudud-i-Alam it’s an original Arabic phrase which means, “The Limits Of The World.” It was translated into English by Vladimir Fedorovich Minorsky and published in Lahore in 1927. In this document is referred as a small city with impressive temples, huge markets and huge orchards.
