Daily Prompt : Quicken

In response to daily post’s one-word prompt : Quicken

I remember my mom  could cook  several dishes in one hour . I was fascinated and wondered how she managed to cook the food so fast. I only thought about it and failed to ask her what was her secret.

One day my younger brother rushed into the kitchen and said, “I’m hungry Mom I want to eat now.”

My mom looked at him and replied, ‘I can be afraid of you, but the stove is not, so even if you scream and tell me to hurry up, the stove will take it’s time.’

Daily Prompt : Arid

In response to daily post’s one word prompt : Arid

When I come across the word Arid, I visualize Saudi desert in the Middle East. Extreme heat and lack of water. Despite all this millions of Muslims travel to Makkah for pilgrimage every year.

The burning sun fails to deter them from visiting  this holy place at least once in their lifetime. No discrimination exists here, you can be of any color, race or speak any  language, all  are welcome. The pilgrims have one desire, to pray, to treat each other with respect. They sit wherever there is space. There is no special place for millionaires or the poorest in society. They are all there to pray at regular intervals.

The Muezzin’s call alerts the pilgrims it’s time to wake up and attend the morning prayer. Allahu Akbar, God is great is repeated several times during the prayer.

I was fortunate to visit this holy place once and I was thrilled to see so many people, entering the gates of the mosque to offer their prayer.

The heat makes you very thirsty, there is a  place in the lower level of the mosque, where there are several fountains. I remember going down for a drink. I had no idea how the faucets work, each time I turned on the faucet to drink water, I only got a few drops. It didn’t quench my thirst. In my mind I said I wish someone would hold the faucet  for me so I can drink to my hearts content. Suddenly someone behind me held on to the faucet, after I was finished I turned around to thank the person, but saw no one. I just said, ‘Thank You God.’

Daily Prompt: Baby

In response to daily post’s one-word prompt : Baby

Sophie female twelve weeks old

Sophie female twelve weeks old

When we got our baby feline she was eight weeks old,

She was cute, she was  cuddly and a joy to behold.

She was so   scared of our   felines,

One look at them caused her to hide ‘n  whine

In shape and size she could  fit in my palm

I thought Raph and Gabe would do her no harm

One day I noticed she was pooping on our bed

What if it continues I had a feeling of dread

My daughter said, ‘Mom something is wrong,

I must find out it won’t take too long.’

What we found out was strange indeed,

The litter box was blocked by our Siamese breed!

Daily Prompt: Slur

In response to daily post’s  one-word prompt : Slur

I’ve had the experience of coming into contact with little babies and toddlers. Though not all, there are some who speak unclearly. I have no idea what causes this, I know their speech gets clearer as they grow up.

One of my cousins had trouble with the ‘K,’  sound  he’d either replace it with an ‘H’ or a ‘T’. Years later I saw him, I was amazed his problem with the sound of ‘K’ had disappeared.

Curious as I always was I said, ‘hey Sanu, how did you learn the sound of ‘K?’

He told me when he went to school his teacher recognized his problem, who made him say, ‘K’ pointing the sound comes from the throat, the teacher asked him to  pronounce the,  ‘K’ sound  after him, my cousin watched him and then imitated the teacher by repeatedly making the  ‘K’ sound , until he learned not to say ‘H’ but ‘K.’ I thought it was interesting. His teacher was not a ‘Speech Therapist,’  but what he was able to do was remarkable.

As humans we  need a Hideout,

My brother did it to tryout,

The food he refused to share

With us about whom he didn’t care

The  food just out of the oven

Warm, aromatic muffin!

In response to daily post’s one-word prompt : Glitter

Whenever I hear of the freezing rain

I think of   glittering trees from my windowpane

I hear nature’s warning loud and clear

‘Get ready with artificial lights my dear.’

………………………….

Immediately I get ready with my flashlights

Trying to avoid  the dark with all my might

Then this ghastly truth makes me whine

What will I eat when it’s time to dine?

My stove needs electricity to cook

without it I cannot try to nuke

So what’s the only thing for me to do

Eat cold bread and yesterday’s stew!

Daily Prompt : Blur

In response to daily post’s one-word prompt : Blur

This year I read nine books and have started my tenth. This continuous reading is affecting my eyes and there are  moments when  my vision is blurred. I then put the book down and rest my eyes.

When I was in primary school, I used to read books and do  my homework in the evening without turning on the light. One day my Dad caught me, he told me I would ruin my eyesight if I continued to read in the dark.

I now realize how important it is to take care of my eyes.
