In elementary school I was flooded with idioms. We were given these daily to write a story. When I read the prompt, immediately I thought of.”Procrastination is the thief of time.” We were always reminded to use our time wisely.

There are a number of things I have left to be done later. I know it is not the right thing to do. I bought novels I wanted to read. I have them on my shelf,I guess they are wondering when will I read them.

At this very moment I am thinking of cleaning my room.I have neglected it for a long time. Hopefully the word,”Procrastination”,will make me start.

So my blogger friends,I am getting ready to do my chores. My intention is to read my books next. Au Revoir (see you later).

DP Daily Prompt: Red Pill, Blue Pill Post by Ranu

Cooking Mama: World Kitchen

Cooking Mama: World Kitchen (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Today’s Daily Prompt brings back nostalgic memories of my aunt. She and I got along well,we spent hours talking about this and that. Poor thing she was the one who was in the kitchen cooking all day, with minimum hired help.I remember, we had just finished eating lunch,my aunt Bela was back in the kitchen preparing supper. I sat on the doorstep of the kitchen, watching her.She looked tired that day, she had a very tired smile. I wasn’t old enough to help her,and didn’t understand her pain.I was there to use my ‘gift of gab’. Suddenly she looked at me and said, “Ranu wouldn’t it be wonderful,if someone invented a pill which would replace food, and we’d be satisfied,it’d mean no cooking,no washing dishes, what do you think?” What did I think my brain could not fathom, that a pill can actually take the place of food. I smiled and said nothing. Either way it made no difference to me,this thing aunt Bela dished out to me was way beyond my comprehension.

Today after such a long time,I face the same question. It is slightly different but the thought is the same,a pill replacing cooking and cleaning, would I take the pill with all the nutrition stuffed in it,only it would look like a normal pill. Whether it is red or blue who cares. I know this is the twenty-first century, the world has made huge strides in technology. But can they invent a pill that can be a substitute for food. If for instance they do discover this extraordinary pill that single-handedly takes care of all our woes of cooking and cleaning. It looks good on paper. ‘Nay’,I will not go for it. I’d rather prefer my labor of cooking than have a pill. I’ll miss so many tasty food, the act of eating crunchy chips, chewing those juicy hamburgers, eating those fabulous cheese cakes. the flavor the taste of food,I’ll miss if I opt for a pill .I think about it this way, I will miss chewing and exercising my jaws.

There is too much to lose and not much to gain. Cooking is fun and relaxing. Then there is the question of inviting friends and families, what am I going to serve for dinner , “A Blue Pill”? No it looks and sounds grim from start to finish. So I say no to this amazing pill.

DP Daily Prompt: Helping Hand Post by Ranu

This experience takes place in Makkah. My husband, his cousin,  his family and I were travelling on the bus. The bus driver was supposed to take us to  Muzdalifa where we were supposed to spend the night and come back to Makkah, the following morning. Suddenly the driver stopped and told us to get off. We had no idea where we were. My husband’s cousin, knew a few words of Arabic,he tried to explain,we won’t find our way.It was dark and deserted. The driver kept yelling and told us to get off. Miraculously someone showed up,he was an Egyptian. He had a heated dialogue with the driver and was able to convince him to drop us off at the taxi stand. To be sure he boarded the bus with us. We all got off to hire a cab.The nice man called a cab driver, told him in Arabic to drop us off  in Muzdalifa. We thanked him and got in the cab. We reached our destination safely. I will always remember this.

DP Daily Prompt: Unconventional Love Post by Ranu

Unusual or unconventional Love. This is something I did not think about. I began to think who can it be to whom this title would fit in my mind. The name of my younger brother comes to my mind. He was one of those people who did not demand anything. I loved him dearly much more than any of my other siblings. Maybe he was very kind, always around me if I needed something, and my other siblings wouldn’t care to listen. He was a very intelligent person,he was not arrogant or a show- off.

He was  younger  than most of us ,yet he was always trying to help each one of us. I loved him unconditionally. It is not easy to have a brother like him.I was fortunate he was our brother. He passed away a while ago,I still feel very sad, I could not have him for a longer period.

DP Daily Prompt: Freaky Friday Post by Ranu

I would like my friend Mini to spend a day as me. She has known me for a while. My friend like they say,”Was born with a silver spoon in her mouth”. She doesn’t quite know how to survive without that spoon.

I on the other hand am completely different. I would like to see her reaction, after she spends a day as me. First of all a nine to four job, secondly come home and look after three kids, feed them, spend time with them. The third to cook our meal, eat,do the dishes, sit with the kids to assist them with homework. The point to remember here is these things are to be done by her. There are no servants to pick up, clean up,the whole bit.All these things will be her responsibility.

After spending the day doing what I do. She will not like the experience. She will realize how helpful her servants are.She would stop yelling at them every few minutes. She will treat them kindly. She will give them some time to rest.

Last thing she will learn from this, is how lucky she is and should be thankful to the Creator and His creation!

DP Daily Prompt: History Of language ( The third time’s a charm)post by Ranu

There was a poor farmer. He lived alone in a hut made of mud.He was alone,he had to cook for himself. He did not earn enough to hire a maid. He went to the market daily to buy fish.It was cheaper than meat or chicken. It also took minimum time to cook.He had one bad habit .He left his house everyday to play the game of  cards. He made sure the food was cooked before he went to see his buddies.

One day as usual he cooked his meal and went to play with his friends. When he returned he had an eerie feeling something was not right. He immediately checked his food.Sure enough it was gone ,he had no fish that evening. He had to be contented with boiled rice. Next day he went as usual to play, when he came back ,same thing happened, the fish was missing. He was furious and decided to stay back to find  the thief. To his surprise ,he saw a tabby coming in ever so slowly. He was silent, as soon as the cat went for the fish, he caught it. He said out loud,”So you are the thief, who was eating my fish,I will kill you this second”. The way the cat looked at him  softened his heart, he gave up the idea of killing it and let it go. Then he said,”I know why they say third time’s the lucky charm.” I found the thief, when it came the third day and caught it.

English: Supplicating Pilgrim at Masjid Al Haram. Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Français : Pélerin en prière dans Masjid Al Haram, la mosquée interdite, à La Mecque (Arabie Saoudite). (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Every year there are about two and a half million people from all over the world who congregate for pilgrimage. My family and I also went to Makkah for the same reason. One of the requirement is to go around the ka’abah seven times. This was a day when if you are not careful, you can get lost.It happened to me,I was so busy praying and going around I forgot to keep pace with my family. To my amazement I found myself separated from them.I moved around looking for them,I found me in a sea of people, there wasn’t anyone I could ask for help.Every second felt like eternity.

It took me a while to believe,’I am stranded’,I have no money,I don’t know Arabic,I am hungry and worst of all the thought that I  don’t know where I will spend the night, was killing me inside.I couldn’t even weep to feel better. My tears were dry.I kept asking myself, did I really lose my family? I started to walk and reached the front of the mosque,I climbed a few steps and sat down,I had no strength to climb up any more. In the middle of this terrible anxiety I heard my mother’s voice, she was telling me to  pray quietly.I was happy my mother was miraculously telling me what to do. I began to  pray, which I always did when I needed help from the,”Divine”.I prayed and asked God to help me,I was stranded in a foreign city. This is what I said,it is a translation from Arabic into English:

In the name of Allah, the beneficent, the merciful.

“Allah! There is no God save Him,The Alive,The eternal.Neither slumber nor sleep overtaketh Him.Unto Him belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth. Who is he that intercedeth with Him save by His leave? He knoweth that which is in front of them and that which is behind them while they encompass nothing of His knowledge save what He will. His throne includeth the heavens and the earth. And He is never weary of preserving them.He is the Sublime, the Tremendous”.

I kept repeating the prayer. My eyes were heavy and I fell asleep where I was sitting. I had a strange dream, someone was asking me, why I was there. The stranger had  a friendly face.It seemed this was what I needed,I broke down and tearfully related my story.Next moment I felt someone’s arms around me. Fear gripped me,I quickly opened my eyes, there before me was   the face of an angel, she assured me I was going to be fine. She was there to help me.Immediately I became aware of the fact, that I asked for ‘Divine’ help through my prayer and God has sent this person to help me.

She took me to her home, while on our way she kept reassuring me I was safe. We used sign language, she didn’t speak English and I couldn’t speak Arabic. Her family received me as if I was one of their own. Amidst all the sign language between us,the lady instantly remembered one of her son’s can speak English. This revelation brought joy to us.The son was brought in and the atmosphere became pleasant,he was the interpreter for me and the family. We exchanged pleasantries for a while, then as promised the lady with my help found my family. My husband was worried and told me how scared he was of losing me.My nightmare finally came to an end.I was grateful to God for His help.I was convinced that If one needs help, prayer is the best source.

Daily Post: Bedtime stories posted by Ranu

The moral of my story,I read as a child is: “A friend in need is a friend in deed”. I will write the story as I remember it.Two friends were walking in the forest one day.Suddenly they saw a bear coming towards them, one of them quickly climbed the tree and looked down. Not knowing what to do,the other friend thought it wise to lie down on the ground and pretend to be dead. The bear came and started sniffing, thinking the man was dead,it left him untouched. It seems bears don’t eat dead people. When the bear left, the man on the tree jumped down and asked his friend, “What did the bear tell you in your ears”? Without wasting any time he said,”Oh the bear said be careful who you consider to be your friend”.

Since then I knew it was a good lesson for a child to learn and  if I have a friend,I should do everything possible to help him/her. I do help whenever I can. Even today I do what I can to help a friend.
