Why did I start my blog?

I started blogging when I read a post by one of my online classmates. It was something new to me. I didn’t even know the meaning of the word. I asked our online instructor if I would be able to start my own blog. He thought it’s a good idea.

Next I had no idea what I could write about. This time another online classmate said, ‘You are a Bengali, you can start translating Tagore’s poems.’ I took out Tagore’s book, sonchaita( a collection of Tagore’s writings) and translated some of his poems.

While translating poems, the thought of translating Tagore’s songs made me think, perhaps it would certainly be of interest to some bloggers. And it did.

I then felt I should find out what else I could write about. I was thrilled to find out, I can write using WordPress daily prompts. This is where I did some courses. I enjoyed writing a variety of poems.

Right now I’m using 365 days prompts to write. I’m learning a lot and enjoying it.

365 Writing Prompts: Goals

When you started your blog, did you set any goals? Have you achieved them? Have they changed at all?

I had no clue what blogging meant, I read one of my friend’s post , decided at once I want to join too. At that time I was learning what blogging was about. On the advice of a friend I did some translations. It was the first time I attempted such a task.

The comments from friends from the online course encouraged me . I continued to translate and wrote a few stories, and posts about different places in India, Pakistan and Australia. I still did not have a goal in my mind.

I decided to participate writing the prompts provided by WordPress, I enjoyed writing. I noticed my writing was more fluid as the days went by.

Lately I’m thinking of writing some short stories without prompts, I’m slightly confident of myself. This will be my goal, my success depends on my motivation. I have not achieved my goal yet. Nothing is changed right now.

DP Daily Prompt: Morton’s Fork

If you had to choose between able, to write a blog( but not read others’) and being able to read others’ blogs( but not write your own), which would you pick? Why?

Honestly speaking,I will choose neither.

The style of writing of every one is different, their choice of words, their likes and dislikes, how they feel about something or anything gives me the kind of motivation I can never get just by writing.

Which brings up the following,Why do we read a variety of books?Do we read for pleasure only or do we learn from it? If I were to answer this question, I’d say we get pleasure and knowledge by reading books. The knowledge can be as simple as increasing my vocabulary, it can be to improve my writing.

If I just write and do not read, whether it’s fiction non-fiction or even a blog, I’m withholding my chances to be a better writer.

Reading others’ work opens up a lot of possibilities, of learning, increasing my vocabulary, the art of writing and there are so many things!

DP Daily Prompts: To Be Resolved

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

We’re entering the final days of 2014–how did you do on your New Year’s resolutions these past 11.75 months? I s there any leftover item to be carried over to 2015?

The words final days sounds so dreadful and permanent. I cannot recall making any resolutions particularly on New Year’s day 2014.

What I’ve done so far is I resolved to take care of certain things on a daily basis, some I do, others I just ignore, I tell myself I am not in a mood or there is something else more important than the one I am thinking about.

One thing I never leave by the wayside is writing my prompts, something about them makes me do it, I wish I knew what it is that drives me to write these prompts. It is not that I have a queue waiting out to read  my blog, there is only one, God bless him he clicks the like button and writes his comment with so much gusto that I feel I can never disappoint him.

Coming back to leftovers, they are a way of my life, I am so thankful to whoever invented the refrigerator, I get to put away the unconsumed food in that wonderful appliance.

I do have a lot of leftover items to be carried over to 2015, it is my basement. I have to set things in order. There are so many things in there I sometimes wonder, why did I put them in the basement, I could throw them out, but I don’t know about others there is always that pack rat mentality, which stops me from discarding anything. I now am facing the problem of an overstuffed basement with things I may never use.

Yes my New Year’s resolution in the coming year 2015 is to clean my basement, I cannot make any other resolution, this alone may take me a good part of 2015!

DP Daily Prompt: Mirror,Mirror,on the wall Post by Ranu

Snow White Mirror 1

I like the story of ‘Snow white and the seven dwarfs, and the evil queen’,every time she went to the mirror to find out who’s the fairest of them all,She never got the reply she wanted. I know this prompt has nothing to do with it. But then again, mirror, mirror on the wall is a reminder.

What does my blog reveal? It tells about me the person. The name of my blog is an example of my love for my Dad.The fact that I lost him early is all the more reason to keep his name alive.

My posts depict what I love.I love Tagore the poet.I have known about him from a very young age.His songs, his poems, his novels reverberates in my mind.I am proud to be a Bengali,it is a gift for me . I feel with every poem, and songs I translate I  am enabling others in a very small way to know, how great he was.

The daily post has given me the opportunity to write a little bit of myself,my likes and dislikes. I have gained some confidence by writing. I have a way to go.At the moment I am happy to write simple incidences of my life.I am not here to bore anyone.I just want to amuse myself.

My life without a computer will be miserable. I had this experience a few weeks ago. My computer crashed.I was unable to post or send email to my dear friends.

I went to the store and bought one.If this happens again,I will start reading all the books in my shelf. The books are sad I am not giving them the time. Once I finish reading,I will be the most learned person in my room.

What will I do next.I will gather all my sarees together and find the blouse to wear with them. Put them in one suitcase or my closet with a large tag, which will read ‘Ranu’s sarees.

I’ll tidy up my neglected basement, make it look like someone still lives in the house. While I’m doing all this,I may not miss my computer. Then again maybe not what about all those Bollywood movies I haven’t seen. The songs I wish to hear. I also have to read about different countries of the world.

Come to think of it,I cannot function without my computer!

The one person who is not reading my blog I hope is my classmate Rina. She will criticize until the ,”Cows come home”. It’s not a good thing. The world unfortunately has a mixture of the good, the bad, and the ugly.Which category does she belong, you may wonder.Let me give you some examples: She is very negative e.g when someone says,’Chaman is a nice girl’, her sister is conceited will be her reply.I know the girls were talking about me. No one knows my sister and it isn’t about her. If I say so n’ so is pretty, she’d say but she limps when she walks. These were some of the instances that bothered me. I know she will not have anything good to say about my blog. This is the way she is. Since my blog is not restricted to a few,and internet is popular all over,I won’t be surprised if she gets the opportunity to read it.
