365 Writing Prompts: First

Tell us your first day at something___ your first day of school, first day of work, first day living on your own, first day blogging, first day as a parent, whatever.

My first experience of a snowstorm was on November 13th I was in Montreal ,Canada , I was on my way  to the typing school as usual, while walking to the bus stop I noticed the sky was white and calm ,I didn’t know anything about snow then, yes I knew they have snow but how much or when I had no idea. I also didn’t think of the famous phrase, “it’s the calm before the storm.”

I entered the school building and went straight to the typing class, some of the girls were already there,I sat in my seat and began typing, our teacher came an hour later, she looked at me and said, “girls I hope you brought your boots today, there is a lot of snow on the ground, it is turning out to be very stormy.”

I heard it but had no reaction , I wasn’t quite sure what a snowstorm meant, I continued my typing, at four pm we all got up to get ready to go home, the teacher looked at me and said, “Don’t you have boots?”

Of course I wasn’t wearing boots, I was wearing sandals and my  sari, it still didn’t strike me that I’d have trouble getting home.

As usual I got out of the building and walked towards the bus stop, one gentleman came and asked me if I saw  any buses moving, I wasn’t looking for any buses moving, I was waiting for the one I took daily to go to school and back home. The gentleman could tell by the way I was dressed I had no idea of what a snowstorm means. He mumbled something which sounded like there are no buses moving, he then left.

I stood there and tried to understand the situation I was in, I was still not aware it would be difficult for me to get home. I saw a cab I raised my hand to stop him, he stopped and asked, “Where will you go?”

As soon as I uttered ‘Victoria Avenue’ he said , “none of the cabs will go there, it’s too dangerous.”

This scared me I walked back to the school building , called my husband, my brother-in-law picked up the phone, he told me my husband wanted me to stay in the school building,he will get me when the snowstorm stops and the buses start moving.

After waiting for several hours my husband came to pick me up, I was relieved to see him and told him I will not go to the typing school anymore.

It was the first time I saw so much snow, I also learned it was a blizzard and one has to be properly dressed to be out in one!

DP Daily Prompt: Terminal time

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

You’re at the airport, your flight is delayed for six more hours, and none of your electronic devices is working. How do you pass the time?

A few years ago I went to the airport ten hours before the flight, When I checked the time before leaving I thought the flight was at 10 am, When I went to the counter to check in, the good man looked at me and my boarding pass, he wasn’t sure himself whether it was 10 am or 10 pm, when he looked at it the second time, he took a deep breath and rather gently gave me the bad news, “Good Heavens He expressed , Your Flight Is At 10 pm!”

I was embarrassed my brother and sister-in law had come to see me off, suggested I should go back with them, I refused to give them any more trouble and opted to stay at the airport.

You can never get bored at ‘Heathrow Airport’, there is so much to see and do, hours pass by sooner than you think.

I went to the lounge, looked around for a place to sit I sat down when I found one that I liked. I spent the first hour watching people, there were so many interesting people coming in and going out. There were people flocking to the duty free shop to buy cigarettes, candy and bottles of whisky.

I have no idea how much cheaper the duty free things are, I know the word free attached to duty certainly catches the attention of the travelers, so they buy as if this deal will subsidize the money they paid for their tickets.

Having spent considerable time watching the passengers,I felt it was time for me to eat something, I noticed a restaurant with a large sign, “EAT” I immediately got up and headed to that restaurant, they had sandwiches and other foods, for the sake of safety I chose a simple sandwich, I didn’t want to get sick while traveling.

There were five hours to go before I could board my flight, I came back to my favorite place and sat down, I looked around to see if I wanted to buy something, there were all kinds of chocolate, I bought some, back to my seat I came.

Another four hours my watch said, have you noticed when you want the hours to go faster they slow down or so it seems?

I saw the sign “Boots” made up my mind to check it out, there was nothing there I wanted,it helped me to stretch my legs for sitting so long. I think I spotted an interesting magazine, I picked it up and turned the pages, wasn’t one I’d think of buying I put it back in the shelf.

I must have spent a lot of time in that store, when I came out I looked at the video, OH My God I said my flight is boarding.

I rushed to the gate after checking in I went to sit in the passengers’ lounge. I was at ease I’d soon board the flight.

Everything after boarding the flight went well, I reached my destination safely. I cautioned myself, make sure you read the time properly, when in doubt ask someone.

NaBloPoMo Nov.7 Poem about a Cat Ranu’s post

Persian cat / Chat persan

I saw his picture on Sally’s phone

A small black cat was he.

He is a Persian  I am told

He cannot find a home.

Three times he was taken back

It was not his fault.

Each time there was

a different reason,

He cannot get along,

The owner is moving,

Last one was he

Is not hypo-allergenic.

Poor Boots

No one cared two hoots

He cried all the way

hearing this made me sad.

I hope someone kind took

him home.

And he is not put down.

DP Daily Prompt: These Boots Were Made for Walking Post by Ranu

English: These boots are made for walking .......

English: These boots are made for walking ……….. Who says Penzance isn’t at the forefront of fashion when you can buy thigh length boots such as these in our very own Market Jew Street !!! (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

The prompt reminds me of Nancy Sinatra’s song,’These boots are made for walkin and that’s what they’ll do’. I went hunting for comfortable shoes while I was in Montreal. I took two pairs of mine, but they refused to co-operate when I was walking. One of the problems in large cities is, one has to walk a lot to get anywhere.

The farmer’s market was over a kilometre away from where we were staying. This meant we’d have to walk. The first two days I used the pair I took with me. I ended up having my toes so sore,I could not continue using them. I had to get a comfortable pair. When I stepped out of the store, the problem continued. My daughter’s advice was,’Mom you have to break into them’.I understand that part, but I was only there for two weeks,I knew it was not long enough to feel at ease with them. Between stop and walk ritual I managed to cover the grounds. I had to walk from the subway station to the park to watch tennis matches where our favorite players were playing.

We went on a shopping spree, which required metres and metres of walking. My shoes took me to a lot of places,I honestly didn’t enjoy walking that much. It had to be done or else I’d have to sit and wish some angel would lend me her wings so I could fly everywhere. It is only possible in fiction.

I had aching feet, toes and everything that goes with walking, but was deprived of pleasure!
