Five sentence fiction:Breakfast

Lillie McFerrin Writes

It was a school day, Penny woke up late, she was about to rush to school, her mom stopped her.

“No, Penny,” Mom said, “you must not skip the first meal of the day.”

Reluctantly she came back and sat in the kitchen, hurry mom she said, “just pour a glass of milk, I’ll be okay.”

Mom ignored her request, she toasted two slices of bread, fried an egg, and poured a small glass of orange juice, “start eating, think about nothing but the food in front of you, at this moment your concentration should be on your breakfast, do not lose this precious time thinking about school.”

Penny was astonished to hear how her mom was speaking, she never told her to concentrate on eating her food before, she must have read a book with a title which says,”Concentrate,” how strange she thought and started eating.

DP Daily Prompt: Salad Days

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

Is there a period in your own personal life that you think of as the good old days? Tell us a story about those innocent and/or exciting times( or lack thereof).

I do have a lot of pleasant memories of my childhood, we the siblings enjoyed playing with each other, we did not hesitate to make fun of each other if we made a mistake.

Our day started very early, my mom woke up at 3 am, each morning to pray and then it would be long hours in the kitchen cooking. My dad was fussy, he did not like the same food each morning, my mom had to cook different types of food for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Whenever my dad was in a bad mood the servants were afraid to take his food, none of my siblings would volunteer either. My mom would look at me with a straight face and say, “Ranu take your Dad’s breakfast, or dinner depending on the time of day.”

You must be wondering about lunch, my mom sent it through one of my Dad’s Chaprasi(this was a man who ran errands for my dad).

Apart from taking my dad’s food when he was not in the best mood, I spent long hours playing with my siblings.

One thing I loved about my Dad was, he did not want us to eat street foods, but if a vendor came by with delicious pastries he would make sure to buy for us, because he felt it was safe for us to eat.

I remember once my Dad was gone somewhere four of us went to his bathroom to take a shower, we were screaming and playing with water, suddenly I heard, “Amaar ghoosal khanai ke ray?”(Who is in my bathroom)?

We froze and stopped, there was no way out we knew he’d catch us, he came slowly, opened the door and told my three siblings to leave immediately, I was scared I thought he’d pull my ears but he didn’t. He told me I was allowed to take a shower in his bathroom but to make sure the other three didn’t join me.

Yes he didn’t scold me, he knew I was the only one who kept things tidy and also took his food when he was upset.

“Those were the days, I thought will never end!” When I think back it makes me smile and wish I could go back in time.

DP Daily Prompt: Sleepy Time

pad2014-s.png (308×60) More and  more of us go to bed too late because of sleep procrastination. What are the nighttime rituals that keep you up before finally dozing off.

From my childhood I and my family went to bed early. We had a specific time to wake up in the morning,we had to get ready to go to our kind of work, my siblings and I were required to be ready by six am to catch the school bus, my Dad went to work at 8 am. My mom was up for her morning prayer which had to be completed before sun rise. After prayer she’d be in the kitchen to cook breakfast. My father was not interested in having the same breakfast daily. My mother was a good cook and prepared a different breakfast every day. Next she got ready to prepare lunch for my Dad and us.

Our habit of sleeping early stayed with us. I do not have problem with sleep procrastination. There are a few times I stay up longer than usual, these are days when we have company for dinner, other than that I maintain my habit of going to bed early.

My nighttime ritual is simple, these days the sun sets after 9 pm. This changes my routine slightly, I have to wait to complete my prayer after sun set. I still make sure I am in bed by 10:30 pm which is latest for me.

There will be a routine change for Ramadhan for a month, after that things will go back to normal as far as my sleep time is concerned!

Writing Prompt: Feed Your Senses

Write down the first sight, sound, smell, and sensation you experienced on waking up today.Pick the one you’re most drawn to, and write.( for a bigger challenge write the one you’re least drawn to).

I was awakened by the harsh sound of the alarm at 4 am . I turned to make sure it was really 4 am ,unfortunately it was.  Reluctantly I left my cozy bed went straight to the bathroom ,washed myself and voila I was ready to say my morning prayer. Why so early you may think, this one has to be before sunrise. Where you live the sun may rise later but in my neck of the woods it’s earlier.

My morning prayer takes little over five minutes, but there is a prayer I say for my family members who are no longer with us, then there is my dear friend, and a few other relatives, I also pray for myself. By the time I’m done the clock strikes 4.41 am, still too early for breakfast I tell myself. I go back to bed and sleep some more.

This morning I woke up again before 8 am ,heard Raphael and Gabriel our two favorite kittens wrestling with each other on my way to the kitchen. I used the microwave to cook my breakfast, the sound of this alerted Rafa I was cooking something better than what we gave him and his brother.

He started meowing and running back and forth  to each door to get in ,but we were not going to give in, when his loud noise didn’t make any difference, he resumed his game of snatch and pull with his brother.

I can see the sun is shining brightly which is a rare sight, we do welcome the precious one whenever the clouds decide to let it shine.

Now I have almost finished reading the emails I got.

I’ll publish this prompt and see what else I need to get done before I sit and watch the tennis match!
