After many translations of Tagore’s songs and poems, I finally realize, it’s not enough that I am a Bengali, and can claim I understand his poems and his songs. There’s something missing in my translation. The fact that I’m not a Philosopher, therefore I am unable to create the philosophic angle of his song lyrics. Today I’ll make an attempt, hoping I truly comprehend what Tagore is telling us.
This song is in the form of a dialogue between nature and our feelings.
Cloud says, I shall go
Night says I am leaving
Ocean says the shore is found
I do not exist
Sorrow says I stay quiet
as a sign of his feet
I say I only want to give away
I want nothing more
Earth says you have the
welcome garland
Sky says you have
thousands of lights
Love says age after age
I stay awake for you
Death says I sail your life boat!
The question is who do you think
they are talking to?
