Daily Prompt: From you to you

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

Write a letter to your 14-year-old self. Tomorrow, write a letter to yourself in 20 years.

Here is my letter addressed to my 14- year-old self.

Dear Ranu,

How are you, and how do you feel living in Comilla, Bangladesh, did you register in the local school, I’m sure they have a school just for you?

I’m sorry to hear there is only one school in your new town where medium of instruction is English,  rest of them do not. What a shame, I suppose you’re enjoying staying at home, you are not, because your brother hired a tutor for you to study at home?

I’m glad you told your brother, you do not need a tutor  that you can study by yourself. Really, is it possible? Now that you are preparing for the high school exam privately, is it tough or you think you can handle it?

Nice to have confidence, but beware over-confidence is not a good thing. I will let you concentrate on your studies for now. I hope to find out about you in 20 years.

Best wishes to you.

Kindest regards,

Ranu 🙂

365 Writing Prompts: Singular sensation

If one experience or life change results from you writing your blog, what would you like it to be?

The first day I started blogging I had no aim in mind. I wanted to know what it’s about. Now after blogging for over two years, it has become a part of me. I look forward to the prompts and the impression of bloggers who read my writing.

Slowly but surely I am wondering what does it take to write an unbelievable poem like some bloggers I’ve come into contact with or dare to write a story which will attract more bloggers than I have right now. All these are thoughts that I have, when they can come into fruition I wonder.

I have written several five sentence fiction, if I gather these stories  into one long story and publish a book of short stories, will it fulfill my desire ? I don’t know, at this point I am only curious about these things.

I also know just because I’m writing I will not become a novelist overnight, it needs a special skill to be one. Although I do believe if I could use my writing experience and wrote a book of short stories it will definitely give me the kind of confidence I’m lacking at this time.

Six Little Short Stories

1. Once all villagers decided to pray for rain, on the day of prayer all the people gathered, but only one boy came with an umbrella.

That’s Faith

2. When you throw a baby in the air, she laughs because she knows you will catch her.

That’s Trust

3. Every night we go to bed, without any assurance of being alive the next morning, but still we set the alarms to wake up.

That’s Hope

4. We plan big things for tomorrow in spite of zero knowledge of the future.

That’s Confidence

5. We see the world suffering, but still we get married and have children.

That’s Love

6. On an old man’s shirt was written a sentence ‘I am not 80 years old’…I am sweet 16 with 64 years of experience.

That’s Attitude

Have a happy day , live your life like the six stories. 🙂

365 Writing Prompts: Too big to fail

Tell us about something you would attempt if you were guaranteed not to fail( and tell us why you haven’t tried it yet).

After all the writing prompts I’m doing I wish to try to write a book. I lack motivation and confidence which to me is essential if I actually make myself write.

There are varied  problems associated with such an endeavor, what will I write a fiction or a non-fiction? My thoughts favor fiction and if I do all right, I’d move to other subjects. I know it’s easier said than done.

At the moment I’m keeping my options open.

DP Daily Prompt:I Have Confidence in Me

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

Are you good at what you do? What would you like to be better at?

When I first came to Gander, Newfoundland. I was disappointed with the loaves of bread we bought. They were always moldy. I decided to bake bread myself. I never had to bake bread before, fresh bread was available in a lot of shops in Montreal.

It wasn’t the case in Gander. So I announced I will bake my own bread. My husband was doubtful, my friend told me it won’t work, when I asked  why she was discouraging me. Her reply was she had tried but failed the loaves of bread she baked turned out as hard as bricks. “Please do not try she said you’d be disappointed.”

I was given a cookbook “Better Homes and Gardens,” for Christmas by one of my husband’s friends.

I took out the book made a list of the ingredients and bought them  from the nearby Super market, my husband told me it was a waste of time. I ignored him I knew how can I say I cannot do it without trying.

The first six loaves of bread was not so soft, it tasted good. I knew it would get better when I bake bread regularly. After a few weeks my bead came out perfect. I stopped buying bread from the Super market. I was glad I did not listen to my friend or my husband.

I was confident once I started baking bread, it will be better than the bread we bought from the store,

DP Daily Prompt: Last Words

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

You have the chance to write one last post before you stop blogging forever.Write it.

This is a very interesting prompt as far as I’m concerned. I’m a blogger for a little over two years, there is not a whole lot I can write about my experience, I must admit I appreciate the opportunity of writing, this is something I did not think about. I was not so confident about my writing skills when I started, a few of my friends gave me the courage I needed.

I cannot claim I am a great writer but I do claim blogging has in many ways improved my lack of confidence. I look forward to the prompts every morning, some are confusing, others help me to write something.

I am not afraid to write a fiction whenever I have to,about poems my feeling is cautious, I do not consider myself a poet at all. I love reading poetry.

My favorite poets are Tagore, Wordsworth, Longfellow, Iqbal, Shelley and many others. Every now and then I read their poems, I do  not try to write poems, I am of the opinion I’m not natural in this Art.

I have written and published a few poems and posted it. They are very simple.

I like writing stories and publishing them. This is one aspect of blogging I like the most, I can write anything without fear that my post may  not be published.

My conclusion is I love blogging, I have something to do daily, I am not bored and I look forward to doing the prompts that WordPress provides for us.

365 days Writing Prompt: The Glass?

Is the glass half full or half empty?

I think about this idiom in my day to day life, there are times when I’m an optimist and tell myself the glass is half full, then something happens and my perspective changes I see the glass as half empty.

Buddha remarked, “Life is a creation of the mind”.

Shakespeare said “there is nothing good or bad but thinking makes it so.”

Flip Wilson’s character Geraldine brought this idea to life, when he said,”what you see is what you get”.

Something which is important to note which makes a difference is to understand what we see in our life has a lot to do with how we see it.

We fail to see our lives objectively, we are subjective creatures hence we see our lives through filters. We all have our personalities, we see things differently.

The word therapist frightens us because we are worried they may change us completely, it is a wrong idea according to Psychologists, they try to help us to see the world more accurately to live our life effectively.

I was always made to believe I was a poor student and I’d never be  successful. I was never confident of myself even though my profs. thought I had a lot of potential. I remember I visited a family friend after my final exam, she asked me how was it, ‘will you pass’ ?

As usual I said I did not know.

She remarked,”maybe you’ll pass and will get third class.”

I was unhappy, but lacked the optimism to tell her, no I’ll do better. Here was a person who knew nothing about me but did not hesitate to pass her judgement about my academic capability. It was one of my siblings who put this idea in her mind.

No one in my family ever listened to me with any kind of interest. There was no one in my family who ever took the time to understand to know me.  One person who would have shown interest was my father, sadly he died when I had just turned twelve.

Am I good at what I do? These days I spend plenty of time translating Tagore’s poems and songs into English from Bengali. Fortunately Tagore was a Bengali, which is also the language I speak, read and write.  When I started this arduous task,I wasn’t sure I’d have much success. My online course friends and some bloggers think, I am doing a decent job.If I were to take their word,I’d say,I am good at it.

Before this I taught a number of years, both in Bangladesh and Canada. I did well according to my supervisors.

What would I like to be better at is a question,I wonder if it is possible to answer.I’d give it a shot.

After I got married, my husband did all the work from paying bills to submitting income tax,and also took care of the financial part. There were many things I didn’t know was done by him.

Today I am sitting in my bedroom with the computer in front of me and trying to ask myself, “What do I want to be good at”? My husband passed away eight years ago. It is enough time for an individual to put his/her house in order. Regrettably I haven’t come close yet. I am looking at all the files piled up on my bed and thinking how can I organize these.

I can do a lot of things that are unimportant, but am totally lacking the organizational skill. Maybe some day when the stars are aligned properly,my files will stop asking me ,”What are you planning to do with us”? I am at this critical stage now and this is what I’d like to do better.

DP Daily Prompt: We Can Be Taught Post By Ranu

Some people are born good teachers ,some learn as they go along. To be a great teacher,it is important to be dedicated to the task at hand. It can come naturally,  to some ,others need to learn the art of teaching from following colleagues and reading  articles by successful teachers. It is not easy but it can be accomplished.

Teachers are expected to know their students well.By knowing I mean you have to observe them. Some days they may have a bad day, when learning is not possible. It is necessary to show each student that a teacher thinks about them and wants to help them when they need it. It will give them confidence and the desire to learn and co-operate with their teacher. When there is a friendly atmosphere between the teacher and the taught, things will run smoothly. Parents will have faith and discuss with friends and family, how their kid is doing well in school. They will be optimistic about their kid and have good things to say about the school and the teachers in it.

To teach is to take on a huge responsibility,it is not just a 9 to 5 job it is helping to produce great leaders  for the country. Great teachers work for the future of the country, they know that they should take their job seriously.
