Write a new post in response to today’s one-word prompt: CONNECTION

A few years ago I read a poem by Allama Iqbal. I had heard about this poet, I didn’t know him then. I was curious about a poem he wrote in Urdu.

This is the Urdu version:

Masjid toh bana di shab bhar mein

Iman ki hararat walon nay

Mun apna purana papi hai

Barson mein namazi  bun na saka

This is my translation into English:

They built the mosque in one night

The so called honest religious people

They are sinners at heart

In all these years they couldn’t become religious!

My curiosity made me do some research about this poem. According to popular belief there was a piece of land owned by no one. There were two groups who wanted to own it. The challenge was whoever could build a mosque or a temple would become owners of this land. According to the story, a group of Muslims spent the whole night to build a Mosque on that piece of land, they were successful and became the owners. The poet noticed the mosque was built but no one came to pray, this was the reason he wrote the poem.  The story took place in Lahore.

You might think how is this thing connected to me. Well I found out a gentleman named Khurram Ali Shafique was offering an online course on Iqbal studies. I contacted him by email and registered for the course. This is how I made the connection.

365 Writing Prompts: The Stat Connection

Go to your Stats page and check your three–five posts. Why do you think they’ve been successful? Find the connection between them, and write about it.

I checked my stats, there isn’t much connection, there . It maybe different groups of viewers and visitors read those particular posts, some like Tagore’s poems and his songs, others feel the same about a topic I’ve written about, such as, “Can’t watch this”.

I know weather is always an interesting topic for a lot of people, unexpected changes in the weather gets more attention than usual. Sudden shifts was of interest to more people, they compare what happened when they faced unexpected weather, how they coped with it.

I think when the prompts sound interesting more people read it.

365 days Jan. -12 2014– Take Two

I took a picture of the first things I saw, there are two cars parked in my neighbor’s driveway.  I came in and took a picture of  the second thing I saw, they are books on the table.

To write about these two objects and find a connection between them requires some thinking.

The first object is the car. Why do we have a car, the first word that comes to my mind is work. I drive the car to work. The distance between my house and work is several kilometres. I need the car to arrive at my office on time.

There are other things we need to take care of besides work, is to go to the supermarket for groceries. Drive my child to school. Take my kid to watch a movie on occasions. Sometimes I have to take my guest to the airport to get a flight to reach his/her destination.

The second object is a book. Books are essential to get knowledge. We read some for entertainment such as novels and short stories. Some books help us to learn languages. Some we need when buying a new car, these are consumer reports. It tells us about different cars, their performance, the safety features, gas consumption, how many cylinder engine works best and consumes less gasoline.

I’ve mentioned two objects which when we think about  seems to have no connection between them. But after writing about them separately. I do find a connection between them.

DP Daily Prompt: Toy Story Post by Ranu

Plastic soldiers - machine gun soldier.

I do have a toy story, I was not the sole owner. My two younger brothers and my younger sister owned it. I collected money from each one,we then set off to buy a toy in the store. We saw a variety of toys,we had to settle for one, the price was luckily, enough for us to be able to pay for it. It was a toy soldier with a machine gun ,was battery operated, whenever we turned on the switch the soldier would move his head and start firing. He was dressed in a green overall. We had hours of fun playing with it.It was our favorite toy, well it was the only one we had.

Now that I have seen and experienced the facts of life. I see there is no connection with our childhood toy and the real world we live in. I dislike wars, all the killing that takes place in the name of freedom, simply is distasteful to me. There are so many innocent lives lost, thinking about it makes me sick.

When I see someone with a gun it scares me. I remember I had an uncle who was a major in the army.He used to visit us quite often. One day he came in his military uniform, I told him to please come to our place wearing normal clothes( I mean civilian clothes).
