Daily Prompt : Witty

In response to one-word prompt : Witty

I’ll tell you a story of a cook,

He’s the smartest man in my book.

He out-witted his master one day,

Cranes have one leg he did say.

The furious master took him to the park,

There they saw Cranes with one leg in the dark.

The master went close and yelled Shoo,

The cranes put the other leg down and flew.

Now the master said, ‘Explain dear cook’,

The witty cook replied,  ‘Did you say Shoo when you took,

The crane from the store?’

The stunned master swore,

He never heard an argument like this before!

Daily Prompt : Glitter

In response to daily post’s one-word prompt : Glitter

Whenever I hear of the freezing rain

I think of   glittering trees from my windowpane

I hear nature’s warning loud and clear

‘Get ready with artificial lights my dear.’

………………………….

Immediately I get ready with my flashlights

Trying to avoid  the dark with all my might

Then this ghastly truth makes me whine

What will I eat when it’s time to dine?

………………………………..

My stove needs electricity to cook

without it I cannot try to nuke

So what’s the only thing for me to do

Eat cold bread and yesterday’s stew!

…………………………………….. 😦

Our ten-minute free-write is back ! Have no mercy on your keyboard as you give us your most unfiltered self( feel free to edit later, or just publish as-is).

We were walking along on the streets of Montreal’s downtown shopping center, my daughter’s friend mentioned a book she read which she loves. i wanted to know the title,my daughter replied,The time traveler’s wife,Mom.”

I said, “i want to read it.”

We found a book store and luckily the book was there in the shelf, I bought it and came back to our rented apartment. I opened the book read a few pages, decided I must read it when I’m home.

Here I’m home I managed to read two chapters but not sure it’s as good as they say, told myself finish the book and then decide if you like it.

I’m not convinced it’s such a good book, I haven’t found time to read it from where I left off.

I have prompts to do,songs to translate, food to cook, take my afternoon nap, when will I finish reading the book so I can decide if I like it just as much as they do!

DP Daily Prompts: Twenty-five seven

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

Good news— another hour has just been added to every 24–hour day(don’t ask us how.We have  powers ). How do you use these sixty minutes?

Lately I’m pretty slow in getting my work done. If another hour is added I’m elated I think my first priority is getting the two prompts done, it may take thirty minutes. I’d still have thirty minutes left.

I’m thinking how must I use the remaining thirty minutes. It will take five minutes to feed our kittens, five minutes to play with them. Now I’m left with twenty minutes.

I’d start cooking dinner , the preparation time is fifteen minutes, with the five minutes remaining I’ll turn on the computer and listen to my favorite Tagore song.

My extra hour will be taken care of I’d then take a nap for thirty minutes from my twenty four hours.

365 Writing Prompts: Smell you later

Humans have very strong scent memory. Tell us about a smell that transports you.

My mother was a very good cook, she was able to turn an ordinary vegetable   into a very tasty dish. When I came home on holidays from the university my mother would cook all my favorite foods, the smell before I went into the house made me hungry.

Whenever I go to a dinner invitation by a family from Bangladesh  I think of my mother, what a marvelous cook she was and she hardly cooked anything that was not yummy. Unconsciously I compare the hosts cooking with my mom’s, my mom’s cooking is better than theirs.

Each one of her dishes had an aroma which  drew families to our house, they appreciated it, and always wanted to know her method of cooking.

One of her famous food was pound cake, she did such a good job with it, no one not even the pastry shops were comparable.I guess I’m a bit partial.

Daily Prompt: Edge of the Frame

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

We often capture strangers in photos we take in public. Open your photo library, and stop at the first picture that features a person you don’t know. Now tell the story of that person.

I had the occasion of taking some pictures when I was in the ‘Farmer’s Market in Montreal’, I was waiting to pick up some fresh produce, I had to wait  until the lady in front of me could get her shopping done.

While waiting I took some pictures of the fruits and vegetables, I came home and discovered the lady who was standing in front of me is in the picture I took while I was waiting my turn.

I started thinking of her. Perhaps she is also visiting Montreal like me, perhaps she is buying fruits and vegetables for her Grand kids with whom she is spending some time in “La Belle Province”, I recall seeing her quite agitated she was asking for a vegetable her grand kids like, she couldn’t find it,  the vendor didn’t have any clue.

Frustrated she moved on to the next one, fortunately she found it, and bought a plastic bag full, I was amazed to know her grand kids like egg plant. She explained to her friend standing by her side how she cooks egg plant.

I told myself, “lady now that I have captured you in my picture I’ll always think of you and the egg plant!”

365 Writing Prompts: There’s no place like home

If you had the opportunity to live a nomadic life, would you do it? Do you need a home base? what makes a place “home” to you?

No, I wouldn’t like to live a nomadic life if I had the opportunity.

Moving constantly changing locations, switching from one place to another, finding a place to live frequently, not knowing where I’ll rest or take a nap when I needed is not a very comforting feeling.

There’ll be a constant hassle of finding a temporary place to live, what to cook or eat,who are the people close by, are they friendly or unfriendly. If they spoke a language I did not understand would further complicate my problem.

I need a home base, I’d like to know my neighbors and have a good relationship with them. There are emergencies in our lives, like sudden illness, some of the appliances don’t work, we can get someone to take care of it.

If I’m sick I can call the doctor’s office and get an appointment to see my family physician, in contrast a nomadic life does not offer these privileges.

A home to me is a place where I have a bed to sleep at night. A place I can relax, watch TV, write my prompts, play with my pets, read a book, there are all kinds of activities I can keep myself entertained with.

DP Daily Prompt: Just Another Day

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

Our days are organized around numerous small actions we repeat over and over. What’s your favorite daily ritual?

My everyday most important ritual is to wake up at 4 am in the morning, it is changing everyday due to the longer days. I wash and get ready to say the prayer before sunrise. It takes me twenty-four minutes to complete it. The morning prayer only takes about seven minutes, I’ve added few more where I pray for my Mom,Dad, brothers, sister, nephew and niece who are not with us anymore.

I’ve also included my very dear writer friend . It gives me great pleasure to pray for all of them. I do not know whether my prayers will be answered or not,I do tell myself I’m praying for their well-being so there will be no question in the mind of God about my real motive.

After the morning prayer I go back to bed to see if I can  sleep,if not I get up, talk with our two cute kittens what they’ve been up to and to my daughter what her plans are after work.

Next on the list of other things is I find out what the writing prompt is and try to write something, if it is a repetition of a previous prompt I skip it.

I cook supper, for lunch I make a sandwich for myself. I read my book by Reza Aslan, he is an excellent writer and I find his writing enjoyable.

I watch some TV when my chores are done, I also read posts of bloggers I follow, they are terrific writers. These are some of the things I do daily.

Writing Prompt: Stranded

You’re stranded in a foreign city for a day with no money no friends,Where do you go; What do you do?

If I am stranded in a foreign city with no money and no friends for a day, here is what I plan to do, first I’ll walk around the city,it doesn’t cost anything to walk,I’d find someone who speaks my language,if there is no one, I’d continue walking and find some sort of eatery or restaurant, walk in confidently and look for the owner.

When I find him/her I’ll start a conversation, inform him/her where I come from , give a detailed description of the place, the people and what they do for their living, I will talk about everything that makes my home attractive,I’ll drag on with the conversation until it’s lunch time, when his maid calls him for lunch, I’d inquire what sort of food they eat, their favorite food, how they cook it,by this time I am hoping the owner will get interested to hear about foods I like, suddenly the man is interrupted again to have lunch, since I am there he’d feel uncomfortable eating alone, to be polite he’ll invite me for lunch, after lunch I’d thank him and will tell him about some of the delicious food I can cook.

The owner will show interest and will ask me if I could cook some of the foods I talked about. I’d agree to cook and ask him to get the ingredients for me. I’d spend most of the day cooking.

Out of courtesy the man’s wife will invite me for dinner, after dinner, the owner will surely ask the name of my hotel,so he could drop me off. This is when I’d open up about my bad luck. I’d tell him I’ve lost everything, I don’t have money or friends, so I’d have to spend the night sleeping under a tree. I am hoping I’ll be invited to be their guest for the night.
