Everyday Inspiration, Day Seven: Let Social Media Inspire You

Day Seven : Let Social Media Inspire You

Out Of Five Tweets I Chose: : “I can’t decide if procrastination kills creativity or is essential to it.”

_____Grant Snider

This is the question I asked myself many times, as I grew older and perhaps wiser, I realized, procrastination does not kill creativity, it is sometimes necessary.

Let me give you  an incidence I had recently, I selected one prompt out of six, I thought I’d have no trouble writing this one.

When I started writing I could think of nothing, the deadline was passing, I decided I’d ignore it and think about it.

I felt hopeless and decided to sleep over it. Suddenly I heard my mind telling me, ‘why don’t you write about your own experience.’

Next morning I opened my computer, thought about my assignment, but this day was different I had no problem I could write a few pages with ease.

Sometimes we overload our brain with anxiety which only causes more stress. If we give more time it works better, so delaying to do something does not necessarily kill creativity!

Daily Prompts: The Heat is On

Do you thrive under pressure or crumble at the thought of it?Does your best stuff surface as the deadline approaches or you need to iterate, day after day to achieve something you’re proud of? Tell us how you work best.

I do not have a specific pattern doing my work. Sometimes I work best under pressure such as deadlines, I feel scared of them, not being able to meet them, is my worst fear. It depends on the type of deadlines.

Once I was applying for a scholarship, there was a specific deadline or else my application would be rejected. I knew my application had to go through the Principal of the school where I was working, I knew he will slow down the process so my application reaches late and I’d be disqualified. I got in touch with the secretary who was handling the applications, I asked her if it was possible to send my application to meet the deadline, so if the school delays it, I’d still be considered . She told me it was perfectly all right that I am allowed  to send it. I sent my application and I was glad I took that route. My Principal was not in favor. He told me,”Why are you applying for this, we will send you after two years?”

I knew it wouldn’t happen, I believe in the phrase,”A bird in hand is worth two in the bush.”

I’m glad I did what I thought was the right thing to do. I am always glad I thought of sending my application earlier.I was awarded the scholarship which I wanted so badly. Sometimes it needs a bit of creativity to handle deadlines!

Writing Prompt: Personal Space

To what extent is your blog a place for your own self-expression and creativity vs a site designed to attract readers? How do you balance that? If sticking to certain topics and types of posts meant your readership would triple, would you do it?

I recall the day I started my blog,I had no experience and knew nothing about what to pick for my posts. I wrote about things I was comfortable with, I had very few readers, I was happy with it. I was also doing some online courses, there were one or two who followed my blog and wrote their comments. One of them encouraged me to translate Tagore’s poems, the idea was a great one. I started translating, there were two or three others who started reading my posts and liked it.

It was encouraging for me, the idea of translating Tagore’s poems at first scared me,I only knew Tagore from learning his poems and singing his songs, I didn’t think I was good enough to translate his work. Yes I spoke the language he used to write his poems and song lyrics, but the thought of translation of his work did not enter my mind. I did it because I was too embarrassed to admit I was unable to do so.

Pretty soon the numbers of poems I translated was increasing but my readership did not. I was discouraged but I did not give up. Then a blogger read some of my translations and left encouraging comments. I complained I had very few readers. She encouraged me to read the post of others to introduce myself and this way the bloggers may take notice of my posts. It worked but not by much.

I then started participating in the daily prompts and other things, I have a few more than when I started.

At the moment I’m comfortable with what I’m doing, sticking to certain topics to increase my readership three times more would depend on what the topics are about,if they are not something I’d like to write about, I’d prefer not to do them.

I like the idea of freedom to do my own thing, anything that comes in the way of my self-expression and creativity, I will not do it.
