365 Writing Prompts: Fantasy

The Tooth Fairy(or Easter Bunny or Santa Claus—) : a fun and harmless fiction, or a pointless justification for lying to children?

I think ,The Tooth Fairy, or Easter Bunny, or Santa Claus is a harmless fiction . These stories help children’s imagination. They are by nature imaginative, it is because their mothers always tell them make-believe stories, which they love.

I don’t think these stories are pointless justification for lying to children.

These stories motivate children to read, reading opens up new ideas and it gives an incentive to know what else is out there for them to know, curiosity builds personalities, those who are,  have gone on to invent airplane, which is the best invention for mankind.

Humans have extraordinary imagination, I believe the stories of The Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny and Santa Claus are the reason a child’s imagination was encouraged which made them better, writers, readers inventors and so on.

365 Writing Prompts: Free to be me

What’s the character trait you admire the most about yourself?

I like my curious nature, it helps me to study about a variety of subjects  I’m not familiar with. It keeps me interested in reading about everything in our environment. I do not pretend to know a lot of things I haven’t heard about.

I’m always willing to learn, I’ve found out I can even learn from someone younger than me. In this age of technology the younger generation know a lot more than me. I do not hesitate to learn from them.

I love to be friendly and nice provided I’m not treated poorly by my fellow humans.

365 Writing Prompts: Life line

You’re on a long flight, and a palm reader sitting next to you insists she read your palm. You hesitate, but agree. What does she tell you?

I am skeptical about letting anyone reading my palm, the palm reader was  adamant, I gave in. She held my palm and gave me a lesson on what the lines are called. I was irritated but tried to be cordial, I waited for her to start reading my palm.

She started reading my palm, she told me the number of brothers and sisters I had, what they do for a living, that my mom raised us, my father passed away when I was very young. By this time I felt she really is a palm reader and a good one.

She asked me if she could continue, by this time my curiosity increased I said , “Please do.”

Among other things she said I’d settle in a country other than my own, when I asked her how she knew that, she said there is a line that shows it.

She was planning to say more, the announcement from the flight attendant that the flight was about to land, and we should fasten our seat belts and put our seats in the upright position made her stop which left me wondering, where I’d live?

DP Daily Prompt: An Odd trio

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

Today, you can write about whatever you want– but your post must include, in whatever role you see fit a cat, a bowl of soup, and a beach towel.

It was a very warm afternoon, at least I got the feeling in my room, with this thought in my mind I ventured to go out to feel the air outside, to my delight it was much cooler, it motivated me to go for a walk.

My walk took me to an unknown place, I hadn’t discovered this before, curiosity led me to go further, I was walking along having a great time, when instantly I saw a form, I couldn’t figure out what it was I was attracted by it and moved to see what it was, I heard a whistle, a faint cough, before my very eyes the form was changing into two beautiful children, one was a girl and the other a boy, I looked at them with surprise, how is this happening, am I in a world of magic? My thoughts were interrupted by the boy, he was showing me a large beach towel with my name in capital letters, he asked me.

“Would you like this, I’ve got it for you?”

I was taken aback by these strange kids, I held my breath for a moment and then replied, “Who are you, how do you know my name, why is my name on the towel you are holding?”

“Not so fast the boy quipped, I’ll answer your question slowly,I am Stan and she is Virginia, you can call her Ginny, if Virginia is too difficult to say in  one breath. We always knew your name and who you are, sadly you do not know us. We knew your birthday is coming up shortly, we thought it would be a good surprise for you, you are out because inside is stuffy, let’s take you for a ride on your towel.”

I wasn’t sure if I should accept the invitation,my inner feeling said quietly,”say yes let us discover this ride on a towel.”

I agreed to take the ride, I was instructed to sit on the towel, I did and my two companions did the same. I felt quite comfortable, Stan whispered something, the towel began to rise, I was not worried, it seemed the two kids were sincere and they did not want to hurt me.

The towel rose to a comfortable level and stayed in that height for several hours, I was hungry I could not ask my companions to feed me, there was nothing in view except the magic towel and us three.

Out of the blue Ginnie asked me, “Are you hungry, it’s been a long time since we had any food?”

The word food made me hungrier, I said, “Yes I’d like a bowl of soup, but how will you get it I asked?”

“Leave it to us both spoke at once”.

This time Ginnie closed her eyes and whispered something which I heard but did not understand. Within seconds there were three bowls of chicken soup in front of us,  I gobbled mine in no time. Stan burst out laughing, “Why didn’t you tell us you were hungry, this is the quickest  I’ve ever seen anyone finish a bowl of soup.”

I saw the sun setting I asked them when will I go home.

Ginnie said, “Wait miss you have to enjoy your birthday thoroughly, we’ll take you to one more magical place then we’ll take you home.”

I must admit I was having a great time, one more magical place why not, I can deal with it.

I began to notice the towel was landing slowly, in about half an hour it touched the ground. We were in a tent with people of different ethnicity speaking their language. When we landed in the middle they all stood up and welcomed us. Ginnie and Stan’s parents came forward and shook hands with me. I was overwhelmed with this experience. They had a birthday cake large enough to divide between thousands of guests, I was the chief guest because it was my birthday, so I was asked to cut the cake, I did and I was surprised to eat a cake this delicious.

Suddenly I heard a loud Meow, I opened my eyes and noticed my cat Raphael was trying to wake me up, so I could feed him. I wished Rapha did not wake me up I had such a beautiful dream!

365 Writing Prompt: We can be taught

Tell us a moment or an incident that you treasure — not necessarily because it brought you happiness, because it taught you something about yourself.

In my childhood I was known for my curiosity, I was never satisfied with a simple answer to my question ,my family had to deal with my why questions,my eldest brother used to be tired of my continuous why questions so much he’d warn me about the famous phrase, “Curiosity killed a cat.”

This never changed my habit of asking the why questions. In 2010 I accidentally heard two verses of Poet and Philosopher Allama Iqbal’s poem, “Masjid toh bana di shab bhar mein” meaning you built the mosque in one night. It aroused my curiosity so much I had to find out why he wrote it ,to me there had to be a reason.I got the help of the internet and got my answer. I realized then how much I adored the writing of this man, I wondered how I could learn more about him.

I thought of my eldest brother who showed me a book where the words, “seek and you shall find” was on the cover of the book, I was eight years old, my brother asked if I understood what the words meant.I looked at him and said, “it means if you look for it you’ll find it.” I did not pay too much attention to it. Those words reverberated in my mind, ‘seek and you shall find.’ when I thought more of how to know more about this awesome Poet and Philosopher Allama Iqbal.

I was amazed how easily I found out what I wanted to know. I was introduced to another great personality via internet he helped me  register in the online course, which was all about Iqbal, I started taking the course since 2011 and am still doing it and learning more and more about my favorite poet.

It seemed to be an ordinary incident which started with my curiosity and ended up helping to know myself better than I ever knew. It has brought me the kind of happiness I never thought possible, one more time I’d conclude by saying,”Seek  And You Shall Find.”

DP Daily Prompt: If I Could Turn Back Time

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

If you could return to the past to relive a part of your life , either to experience the wonderful bits again, or to do something over, which part of your life would you return to? Why?

If there was a way to return to my past where my father was alive and we were a one big happy family I’d do it in a heartbeat. Why? That was the time when everything was wonderful in my life, except my big sister she was the only one  who was the biggest thorn in my life. I’ll forget about her presence in my happy story.

I remember playing with my two older brothers, we played with marbles, they taught me how to strike the marbles in front of me, each time I succeeded I could win the marble I struck. My fingers were not as strong as them, I played in a weird way, they complained but let me have the marble.

They also coaxed me to give them the money I had from selling my old books, they wanted to go and watch a movie, they had to plead a few times I eventually gave my money, I found pleasure in knowing they wanted  something from me.

Sometimes my eldest brother wanted to borrow money from me, I always had a little bit of money, I couldn’t spend it because my father was not in favor of spending it to buy junk food. So I’d lend the money to my brother and told him he’d have to pay double the amount, once he said I was worse than the Kabuliwalla, these were money lenders who were mean and would come around to collect after a certain date and would stay put until they were paid. I wasn’t that bad.

Next I’d spend a lot of time sitting beside my father in the garden and asked him a lot of questions, while my father kept busy with his newspaper my eldest brother would tease me with the saying,”You know Ranu curiosity killed a cat.” Now I wish I had asked how did the cat get killed?

Once my father’s friend gave me a ride to school,I was very shy then, I got off the car and said, “thank you” so softly my father couldn’t hear, he was disappointed because he thought I didn’t thank his friend. I told him I did it didn’t seem he believed me.

I really would like to revisit those times, I felt they were the best times I had in my life!

When I read the daily prompt,I wasn’t sure this was something I experienced, and can write about. On second thoughts I realized,I did encounter something which can be compared.

I was watching a Bengali movie, suddenly I saw an ad of a Pakistani movie. At that point I decided I will not watch it.I thought they are not so good. I am a very curious person,I had to check it. It was a trailer of a movie. The actor was Waheed Murad. I had no idea how good he was. I watched the movie. It was a pleasant surprise. I googled his name to know more about him. The information I got was encouraging. I started looking for his movies.I watched a number of them. Suddenly I was his number one fan.

While surfing the internet, I saw a piece written by someone. This was about Waheed Murad. I wondered if he was a fan of the actor too. I began reading all his articles, he was a writer and had written about a lot of famous people. Number one on his list was Allama Iqbal.I loved reading Iqbal’s poetry. I had no knowledge of him. Fortunately I found out, this person was giving on-line courses on Iqbal. I was ecstatic and inquired if I could join the course. I got a positive answer.I enrolled in the course. I have done a few and am more than satisfied. I learned about Iqbal. I feel I have accomplished something  because of my curious nature.

I am a regular participant of the on-line course. While I was reading about the courses I bumped into the world of blogging. I signed in to be a blogger .

My life has changed drastically. My curiosity introduced me to Waheed Murad. I am learning about Iqbal the famous Philosopher. I am blogging and learning more than I thought was possible. Such is life, one never knows what the future holds!
