Daily Prompt: Dear Mom

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

Write a letter to your mom.Tell her something you’ve always wanted to say, but haven’t been able to.

Dear Mom,

When I was a little girl, I loved listening to songs, I wanted you to hire a teacher for me, so I could learn to sing. You refused, you thought I would give up my studies and will be illiterate.

You hired a teacher for Yasmin and bought her a harmonium as well. I wish you’d give me the same opportunity as you gave her. I know it’s too late now and you might say,”Let bygone’s be bygone’s “, sometimes I feel sad thinking I could not learn something I loved because you did not trust me.

I know you had lots to worry about after dad passed away, you had to take care of everything by yourself. I’m sorry to bring this subject again, it only gives heartbreak to both of us.

I will try not to bring this subject anymore, I do love you for everything you’ve done for us.

All the best to you mom.

Regards,

Your daughter,

Ranu  🙂

Daily Prompt: Circle of Five

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

A writer once said ,” you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” If this is true which five people would you like to spend your time with?

The five people I’d like to spend my time with are 1. Valerie(my neighbor) 2. Evie ( my college friend) 3. Dilruba (my friend) 4. my daughter and  5. my brother.

All the people I have mentioned possess very unique qualities.

Valerie is an English Prof in the university, she is a delightful person. Recently she came back from Ireland after a three week trip. She brought a beautiful scarf for me.

Evie is my college friend, she has a very sweet personality, she calls me often to tell me about the places she visited. She tells me not to call her, she has a plan where it doesn’t cost her much to call. I told her it doesn’t cost me much either. She insists she’d call me. Isn’t she sweet?

Dilruba is my friend who lives in Montreal, she is very good to me when I visit her. She has three awesome kids, I love them all.

My daughter is an angel, she does a lot for me. She loves to give me gifts. I adore her.

And what can I say about my brother, he is the kindest person I know. He is a writer. He offers online courses. I love taking these courses, I must admit I have learned a lot. I thank him for all the information he provides us.

The above are the five fabulous people I love and adore. They are delightful and the most trustworthy people I know. They make our world a very happy place.

365 Writing Prompts: Freaky Friday

If you could be someone else for a day,who would you be,and why? If that seems too easy try this one: Who would you like to have spend a day as you and what do you hope they’d learn from the experience?

The second one to me has a lot of possibilities. I would therefore like to choose the second one.

Who would I like to spend a day  as me? It would be  with the  little boy I met at the mall, and what I hope he’d learn from the experience? How to grow up as a happy person.

Yesterday I was sitting on a bench. I was waiting for my daughter to get her shopping done, so we could head home.

Without warning a little boy, came and sat next to me. He could be three, four or five, it’s not easy to decipher their age when they are that little. However I looked at him and wondered what made him sit so comfortably beside me, given the fact children are always cautioned by parents not to talk to strangers.

I was a total stranger to the little tyke, he looked at me and swayed his legs to and fro feeling completely at ease. Mom said something which I thought was scurry on or I will leave you behind. He got up extended his tiny hand to shake mine. I was overjoyed and was only too glad to oblige. He left making me realize I still am able to attract little ones as I did when I was a teacher.

If it is at all possible ‘d like to spend my day with this sweet kid. At first I’d tell him how happy I was to meet him. I’d ask his name, where he lives, after the introduction, I’d invite him and his parents to my house, will serve some beverage and food to get better acquainted .

My main interest would be to tell the kid some interesting children’s stories, after this  depending on the response I may spend some time doing a bit of Art. I know kids are naturally interested in drawing when enough time is spent in this activity , we  will use  some  time watching cartoons on TV.

I’d  see how much interest he has left. If he tells me he’d like to write some letters of the English alphabet I’d get paper and pencil, after writing his letters when it shows he wants to do something else. I’d see if he can write his name using some of those letters, if he succeeds,I’d give him some treats and ask him what else he’d like to do.

If he is unable to tell me and it seems his interest is waning, we’d call it a day promising to do the same at a later date!

DP Daily Prompt: Me Time

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

What’s your ideal Saturday morning? Are you doing those things this morning?

Saturday I usually do some grocery shopping, I come home and do some writing.

This morning I’m unable to go I had to complete the course question then take care of the writing Prompt. Now I’m busy writing the daily prompt. I cannot go shopping I promised to go watch a movie with my daughter. My routine has changed this Saturday.

It probably is better to do different things on Saturdays to make it more interesting.

365 Writing Prompts: Happily ever after

“And they lived happily ever after.” Think about this line for a few minutes. Are you living happily ever after? If not, what will it take for you to get there?

Yes I thought about this line as I was writing it. If I had asked my mother when she was alive, what makes a person happy? She’d say happiness is having loving siblings, spouse, and children if you are at that stage. Above all contentment is the key to happiness .

It reminds me of William Shakespeare’s quote: Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown- Henry 1V, part 2.

Since I have no crown i.e subjects to deal with, I’m not uneasy, I have good friends, sincere neighbors, loving daughter and one awesome sibling. These are enough for me to say: I am happy. What more can I want?

About me posted by Ranu

This morning I waited for the daily prompt, there was none.

I thought my blogger friend Leslie wanted to see my photograph taken by my friend Evie when I was in college. Here it is Leslie.

Evie had a camera, she liked taking pictures, she did not spend too much time, she was always busy doing something.

The day she took the picture we all had an autograph book to get everyone to sign in and write something. Evie wrote a few lines in my autograph book and then wanted to take a picture of me.

It is our college campus where we were residing at that time. I am wearing a sari, as far as I recall I did not own one, this one belongs to someone in the residence.

In those days I always wore Shalwar(pants) kameez(shirt) and Dupatta( a long scarf).

My Dad told my Mom one day.

Why doesn’t your daughter

put cream on her face

Or comb her hair like other

Little girls do?

She never saw a village

Yet I think

She is worse than

A girl in a village.

Even  those girls

Know how to dress up

Do you think

She will ever change?

Fiction: Offering

Lillie McFerrin Writes

Offering

Selima’s daughter had an exam, she was concerned for she didn’t spend enough time studying.

She requested her mother to pray that she is successful, it was an important exam, if she did well, she’d have a chance to qualify for medical school.

Selima sat on the prayer rug and started praying for her daughter, she promised she’d donate some money to the local orphanage.

The results were out her daughter Neela was unsuccessful, Selima was disappointed but kept her promise of giving the gift to the Orphanage.

Neela questioned her mother about the donation, Selima said, “I’ve realized I must not make my offering as a bribe to God for something I want!

DP Daily Prompts: Cliche

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

Cliches become cliches for a reason. Tell us about the last time a bird in the hand was worth two in the bush.

I use this expression quite often, we as humans are tempted to think if we wait, something better might show up, it’s not always the case.

My daughter and I were looking for an apartment in London ,my daughter went online, she saw a few and wrote the addresses and phone numbers so she could contact them.

She was able to get an appointment to see one at 10 am next morning. At 10 am we were there to see the apartment, it was a one room apartment, one could use it as a bedroom at night and living room during the day.

The rent was 210 GBP a week, I knew it was expensive, there were some advantages it was close to her place of work, there were little shops nearby where my daughter could get her groceries, it was in a good area and it was a secure place. My daughter wanted to see other apartments which were even closer to her place of work.

While we were talking to the landlord, I saw another couple waiting to see the apartment. It was the time of year when apartments in London were scarce and those that were available were grabbed by the would be tenants right away.

I told my daughter, “let’s not wait, let’s take this one.”

I felt if we let it go we may not get another one as close to her work as the one we viewed. I reminded her, “a bird in hand is better than two in the bush.”

We took the apartment, my daughter spent one year in that place and loved it.

365 Writing Prompts: The Power Of Touch

Textures are everywhere. The rough edges of a stone wall. The smooth innocence of a baby’s cheek. The sense of touch brings back memories for us. What texture is particularly evocative to you?

When I see an unknown thing,I feel I must touch it to know if it’s safe. There are times I turn on a new appliance , I touch it to know if it’s working, sometimes the light alone is not sufficient.

I remember when my daughter was a year old she was learning to walk, every time she was off balance she’d touch the wall, gradually she reached the kitchen, the oven was on, I was unable to reach her fast enough to keep her away from the stove, she did the inevitable she touched the oven door, it was hot, she had both her hands on the door and looked at me she was extremely scared I took her away from it and said, “it’s hot!” From that day onward whenever I said it’s hot she moved away.

I know it’s  a  terrible way to learn, I did not plan for her to feel the heat, it happened, I felt very guilty.

I stay away from touching anything before I know how it feels, I ask before I touch. Seven months ago we bought a kitten from a breeder, his mother is Himalayan and the father is Siamese. He was two months old when my daughter brought him in the house, he was very scared the first day. He hid under the covers in the bed, my daughter had gone to work. I went upstairs to check what he was doing.

At first I heard nothing, then I took the covers off, I found him very scared and unable to move. I picked him up, brought him down to my room. It was the first time I touched an animal, his coat felt smooth and silky, I knew he was too little to hurt me.

We named him Gabriel, we realized he was lonely , so we brought his brother, Gabriel was extremely happy, if he could speak I am sure he’d say, “thank you.”

Today both are confident and are very curious, they’ve managed to tear some pages of my books, they do not feel any kind of remorse.

I confidently pick them up and put them outside my room when their antics are beyond control. I’m not afraid to touch them!

DP Daily Prompt: Envelope Pushers

pad2014-s.png (308×60) When was the last time you took a risk(big or small), and pushed your own boundaries– socially, professionally, or otherwise? Were you satisfied with the outcome? A few years ago my daughter and I were invited to a get-together party in a friend’s house. There were a lot of people there, food was served I was waiting my turn to get some food, my daughter was ahead of me, when she was about to get the food, one of our old acquaintance stopped her and asked  some unexpected questions. I knew nothing about it until we were ready to get into the car, my daughter told me about it and made up her mind never to attend these parties. I was angry, this person always looks for an opportunity to embarrass us. When we got home I dialed his number, he was not at home, I left a message to call me next morning, when my call wasn’t returned by 9 am, I called again, I was firm I told him he must never harass me or my daughter in the presence of strangers. I reminded him if there was anything he wanted to know , he should ask me directly. He tried to make excuses for his behavior but I did not let him. The same person has been doing this kind of irritating thing since we met him, I attempted to stop him, my husband would not let me. This time I felt he had crossed the limit I must prevent him from being a jerk. I was satisfied with the outcome, I was never bothered by him again! k: https://sabethville.wordpress.com/2014/11/24/dp-daily-prompt-
