DP Daily Prompts: Opening lines

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

What’s the first line of the last song you listened to(on the radio, on your music player, or anywhere else)? Use it as the first sentence of your post.

The first line of the last song I listened on YouTube is Tagore’s song, “Bhora thak sriti sudhai bidayer patro khani.” it means:

“Let the farewell vessel remain filled with sweet memories.” It is a beautiful song, what sweet memories will I let the farewell vessel hold on to is what I am thinking?

It goes back to my childhood and the day my Dad was taking his last breath. I was twelve years old and never understood what , “Death,” meant. I saw my mother and my sister crying, and I too started crying.

Someone once said to me,”why are you crying, he has gone to a better place?”

I began to think what is that better place, can someone explain to me, I got no answer.

I thought of the song lyrics and felt, let me think of all the time I spent with my Dad, asking questions, they were to him perhaps meaningless but he, charming as he was would say something to make me feel happy.

I have a lot of sweet memories of my father which I want to keep in my memory bank.

The day I saw some neighborhood kids playing with a tennis ball, I couldn’t wait to have my father home, so I could ask him to get me a tennis ball, I remember that day he came home tired, I stopped him and asked him if he could buy me a ball like the one the kids were playing with. My Dad turned around went out and the next thing I saw was four tennis balls for us.

My next request was can I have a swing? He got his chaprasi(an office messenger) to put one up on the branch of a tree in our front yard, I had hours of enjoyment on the swing.

These are some of the sweet memories of my father, I cherish!

Megh bolechhe jabo(Cloud said,I will go) Tagore song Translated and posted by Ranu

Cloud said: ‘I will go ,I will go’ .

Night said:’I am leaving.’

Ocean said: ‘the shore

is found,

I am not needed anymore.’

Cloud said: ‘I will go I will go.’

Sorrow says:’I stay quiet,

and remain as a symbol.’

I said: ‘I unite,I do not

want anything else.’

Earth says: ‘you have

wreath of flowers.’

Sky says: ‘you light

hundred thousand lights!’

Love says: ‘for you I stay

awake age after age.’

Death says: I

steer your lifeboat!’

DP Daily Prompt: Flip Flop

For the past few years my country of origin is having some serious issues. The main cause is the governing party. Although it seems to outsiders it is a democratic country, sadly it is not. People are put to death without any reason. The educated are leaving. There is general strike whenever the party in power thinks it will be beneficial to them.Crime is increasing in leaps and bounds. The citizens are not safe in their own homes. How can a country survive  when there is so much lawlessness.

This is the time  I feel we no longer can be loyal to this party in power. In the olden days, when the corruption reached its peak, the people were blessed with a saviour. It seems to me it’s not possible any more.

Tagore song by Deb Biswas Translation and posted by Ranu

Cloud said I will go,I will go.

Night said I am going.

Ocean said great,

I am no more.

Sorrow said I stay quiet

as his footprint.

I say,I join them together

I want nothing else.

Earth says, you have the welcome garland,

the sky says I will light up

millions of lights.

Love says I am awake for you

in every age.

Death says

I row your life’s boat.

Cloud said I will go ,I will go.

Life by Tagore translation by ranu

Life                Rabindranath Tagore

Death is not my preference in this beautiful world,

rather I would love to inhabit in the heart of mankind.

In the warmth of the sunbeam and the blooming garden

if I can find space in the core of this lively heart.

The game of life is full of waves on this blissful earth,

parting union so many happy and sad faces I  like to

string together  in my music

compose songs of immortal radiance!

If I’m unable ,then as long as I live

I want to acquire a place amongst you,

hoping you will present my work morning and evening

like a gardener I can  till  new music to bloom for you.

Embrace the flowers with cheery faces; afterwards alas

throw them away if they are scorched.

Death by Tagore translated by Ranu

Death    by Rabindranath  Tagore

I don’t know death.  Today my thoughts are focused on it

I am trembling with fear every moment.

My eyes are tearful, at the thought of leaving this world

I own my life and I am hugging  it with

both my arms.

O ignorant one,

who has claimed life and death as their own

from the time of birth  without your knowledge,

it has been decided! In the morning of death

you will see that face again

one you will know at that moment

I love my life so much, this is why I have a firm belief,

I will certainly love death just as much.

An infant cries in fear when it is removed from a mother’s breast,

the next moment it regains its comfort when it finds the breast.

INSULT——-Rabindranath Tagore

This poem was written by Tagore at the time of India’s darkest days. All the well-known poets and politicians and writers tried to awaken the people’s sentiment. Tagore’s poem is written in Bengali,I have tried to translate it into English to the best of my ability.

“Insult”

O my unfortunate country, those whom you have insulted are not the only ones who deserve your contempt

all the human beings in India should be equally blamed for this tragedy.

Those whom you have deprived of their right and their status as humans,

waited for you to get some recognition but you ignored them,

the contempt they received from you should be shared equally by all the Indians.

You have kept the people away from you

In doing so you took away their belief in almighty God.

They were faced with the wrath of God and the impending famine

and the realization that whatever meagre food and drink, they have will have to be shared equally with everyone.

The condemnation therefore will have to be shared equally by everyone.

Where you pushed them away from you

you managed to sacrifice their strength by your neglect.

Trampled and kicked they were tossed away by the dust__

You have to come down to that level, otherwise there is no hope of retrieving them.

You will have to share this humiliation with them.

Those whom you push down will tie you down also,

those whom you have kept at the back will pull you back.

The ones you have unwittingly hidden away

are sacrificing your well-being and creating a wide distance from you.

You will have to remember all of India deserves the blame for this situation.

For hundreds of years they have carried the weight of disrespect,

you still don’t show your appreciation.

Can’t you see I lower my head for this contempt

it has completely destroyed their confidence and faith in the divine power.

You should also share the insult with everyone.

Don’t you see the angel of death is waiting__

It has stamped a curse on the pride of your nation.

Even now if you fail to call them, it is time for you to stay away,

Bind yourself all over with your anger__

the funeral pyre will burn everyone with same intensity.
