365 Writing Prompts: Teachable moment

You have to learn a new skill.Do you prefer to read about it,watch someone else do it, hear someone describe it, or try it yourself?

To learn a new skill, it is important to know what the skill is about. Reading  will help me how easy or difficult it is, after reading it I’d like to watch someone do it, if I feel confident I will try to do it myself.

A new skill requires a lot of concentration, by reading it I hope to figure out if the said skill is easy or complicated. If reading alone doesn’t help, I’d watch someone do it. Then I might be brave enough to try it.

This learning of a skill brings back memories of my first day at the skating rink. It was a completely new experience.I didn’t read, watch or heard anyone describe it.

I saw the skating rink full of people young and old skating especially little kids were having a grand time. I told myself how hard can it be if these little ones can go round and round gliding ,laughing racing each other on the ice, I only want to learn to skate how hard can it be? Well my problem was I was scared I’d fall down. This fear in me was the reason I could not learn to skate.

365 Writing Prompts: The clothes that(make) (wo) man

How important are clothes for you? Describe your style, if you have one, and tell us how appearance impacts how you feel about yourself.

Clothes are I am sure important to everyone, and to me as well. I have my own style, whether it is acceptable or not I am happy with it.

I wear different outfits as the circumstances demand. I wear my native clothes when I visit people who are from my original home, I wear a sari, so I won’t look strange in their company.

When I go for grocery shopping I wear trousers and top to avoid being stared at. Now a days it’s not too bad with travels in various places people are used to seeing different types of attire worn by travelers, so they do not find it as shocking as before.

When I applied for a teaching position, one of the questions I was asked was whether I’d wear a sari to work, when I gave him a surprised look he immediately said: “Do not misunderstand me your dress is gorgeous I was thinking about the students what will be their reaction.”

I did not want someone to criticize me  about my clothes indirectly, I went to the principal the next day and told him I did not want the job.

Six months after that incident the superintendent of a school board interviewed me and offered me a position to teach grade four kids, I accepted the job, I wore my sari to school the first day and all the years I taught, the kids were fascinated with my dress, they were not narrow minded like the adult.

I also wear Shalwar Kamiz when I go to a party hosted by Pakistanis.

I do not have a particular style, I dress differently depending on where I’m going.

365 Writing Prompts: Pat on the back

Tell someone you’re proud of, how proud you are.

It is difficult to describe just how proud I am of you. Your remarkable dedication to your family, your work  and the students you teach is matchless.

You meet deadlines after deadlines with such calmness, makes me think you cannot belong to an ordinary class of human beings.

When God created you He knew why He sent you down among us, He equipped you with tolerance for the people you’ll come into contact with, brilliance, to deal with humans like us who lack the gift you possess to help us understand the complexities of life  that we face from day to day.

I needed to know someone like you to realize there are good people like you who care and that not everyone is unreliable. I am truly thankful to know you!

DP Daily Prompt: Lookin’ Out My Back Door

Look at your back window…describe what you see ,as if you were trying to convey the scene to someone from another country or planet.

I am trying to describe to my brother who lives in Dhaka what I can see from my back window. My house is in the corner of two streets, the guys who plow the streets are very cruel especially when we have a snowstorm.

What is a snowstorm, it’s like when you have a cyclone,it is windy, the things are blown away and instead of rain we have this fluffy white stuff which is called snow.

When the snow blocks the streets the guy who drives the plow clears off the streets for vehicles to move freely without getting stuck. The part we don’t like is all this snow is dumped at the end of our driveway, we cannot get out if we don’t clear it by shovelling or using  a snow blower.

The unfortunate part for us is we get snow dumped at the end of our driveway from two sides, which makes the work of clearing our snow harder.

From my back window I see snow on my patio and snow on my driveway. The snow at the end of the driveway is dirty because while clearing the streets the plowman also dumps the mud, plastic bags, coffee cups and other food wraps, these are thrown by people who are not interested to keep our city clean.

I can also see my neighbor’s driveway, she keeps her path clean. The trees are naked, because when the cold weather comes the leaves fall off, and grow back when it starts to be warm.

I can also see students walking to the university,it’s hard to see their faces because they are bundled up to stay warm. You can see some vehicles moving, these are delivery trucks, the private cars leave early morning for work.

This is all, there are no flowers, pretty birds or green grass visible right now, they’ll show up soon I hope!

Writing Prompt: Teachable Moment

If I need to learn a skill. I feel it is important to read about it. If I am unable to make sense of it by reading.  I’d try to watch someone else do it.

The only problem I have with watching someone is sometimes they do it too quickly,I am left wondering how on earth did he do that.My experience with demonstration hasn’t been good. I am not the only one who has trouble. My husband bought a gadget, just by watching someone go through the process, when he came home and tried, things did not work out. This is what he said,”It looked so easy when she was showing it, now I can’t even do one thing with it.”

Hear someone describe it, is not going to work for me either. The best thing I think is to read it and do it myself.
