The Daily Post Prompt: Desert

In response to daily post’s one-word prompt: Desert

Abandoned Children

Walking along the road she heard someone crying, as she approached the place she noticed two little kids, a boy and a girl perhaps siblings, she thought.  She stopped, asked them, who they were and why were they by themselves  in this deserted place. What they told her frightened her. They told her they were abandoned by their mother, that she was unable to take care of them, she was penniless, her home was taken away because she couldn’t pay the mortgage.

It saddened Pam when she heard their story, she herself was living by herself, had a job but the pay she received wasn’t enough for her,  She didn’t want to leave them in that deserted place, but she didn’t have the means to support them.

Pam thought it would be better if she took them to the police station, they would be able to help the kids.

When she arrived at the station, there was only one guy who seemed to have no clue about anything. Rather than leave the kids there she decided to take them home, and  call the welfare office the next day.

Early next morning she called the welfare office, but got a message saying the office was closed for a month, the staff were gone on their yearly holidays.

Pam didn’t know what would be her next step, let the children stay with her for the time being or take them back where she found them. She didn’t have the heart to take such a decision. She’d wait  for the month to be over, and would call the office about the two abandoned kids. Hopefully she’d find a solution.

Writing 101, Day Ten: Update your readers over a cup of coffee

Today’s assignment: Write an update post in the form of a virtual coffee date.

Or

*Set your poem or short story in a cafe.

Or

*Go to your neighborhood spot with your laptop or notebook and free-write for 20 minutes, prompted by what you observe.

Or

*Love or hate coffee ? Tell us why.

I think, “Love or hate coffee” is one I’d like to write about.

I do not love coffee and I do not hate it either.

Here is why. I was introduced to tea at a very early age. Maybe because I come from a country where tea is popular, because it’s grown there. We export it to countries all over the world. It’s the main reason coffee was not imported in our countries for a long time.

Now because of the people of  my country travel a lot( Bangladesh). They have tasted it out of curiosity, some feel it tastes good, some think it’s not that tasty, they like it since it’s available all over the world and it makes them feel special and cool. It’s for this reason coffee is available in Bangladesh, but it’very expensive, compared to tea. The stores charge a lot of money for coffee mainly to discourage the inhabitants to pick up the habit of drinking coffee instead of tea.

For me nothing about it makes me want to drink it, since it is stylish, and the phrase, “Let’s go for coffee,” does not attract my attention.

I’m a creature of habit, I’ve had tea, since I started going to school. Rain or shine I had my cup of tea. It is one drink I love and am not about to desert it for something else, such as coffee, hot chocolate or any kind of juice. It’s all about pleasure in my case, the only drink that provides it is tea.

When someone visits our house first thing I’d say is, “Cha khaben?”( would you like a cup of tea?)To these same people if I say, “Coffee khaben?”( would you like a cup of coffee?)

Their response would be, “kee bollen?”( What did you say?)

It would mean so you have forgotten your roots. It is part of our culture. For me it’s part of my habit. I cannot think of replacing tea for coffee.

Why did I not moisten

the dry dust of the desert with my tears?

Who knew you will come my dear

like one uninvited.

You have traveled across a desert

where there are no trees

to provide shadow.

I am so unlucky

you suffered the pain of traveling,

While I was idly spending

time in the shade

of my house.

I was unaware how

much pain you went

through by walking.

It left a scar in my heart.

Why did I not moisten

the dry dust of the desert with my tears.

Incomplete By Rabindranath Tagore___ translation by Ranu

This is a poem in which the poet talks  about all the things that he could not complete.

In life all the prayers I did not complete,

I know ,I know even then it is not my defeat.

The unopened flower  that fell on the earth,

the river that lost its flow on the desert,

I know ,I know even then it is not a loss.

In my life whatever is left incomplete,

I know,I know even then it is not false.

My future my  unblemished life

are playing in the strings of your lute__

I know, I know still they are not lost.
