365 Writing Prompts: Red pill, blue pill

If you could get all the nutrition you needed in a day with a pill –no worrying about what to eat, no food preparation–would you do it?

No I do not like the idea of substituting a pill for real food. There is a satisfaction of knowing, I know what ingredients I’m using to cook my food. Preparing food is not a chore for me I enjoy cooking , buying groceries, visiting a number of stores to get what I want. It is sheer pleasure for me.

As regards the pill I have my reservations, it was not that long ago a lot of people were excited with the idea of using a sugar substitute, now with research they’ve discovered it’s not that good after all,it’s a risk for cancer.

My belief is sugar is the real thing, if too much consumption of it can lead to diabetes or heart trouble, tooth decay, it’s better to give it up altogether rather than using a substitute.

I remember one of my classmates used a substitute for sugar in her tea, but had huge serving of dessert. I pointed out to her she wasn’t helping her body but exposing it too much sugar anyway and also by taking a sugar substitute she is taking a risk.

I do not believe in any pill to reduce my work. I’m in favor of real food.

Writing 101, Day Sixteen: Third Time’s the charm

IMG_0845Today’s Prompt: Imagine you had a job in which you had to sift through forgotten or lost belongings. Describe a day in which you come upon something peculiar, or tell about something you find in a pile.

Today’s Twist: If you’d like to continue our serial challenge, also reflect on the theme of lost and found more generally in this post.

In your “lost and found” tale, tell us something larger– a life lesson, perhaps—about finding and losing something.

Third Time’s the charm: This is a story about our pet felines, We had three rescued by my daughter in her first year university. We could not warm up to the idea as there would be a lot of changes we’d have to undergo.

Where to place the litter box was one problem, what to feed them and their yearly check up at the vet. Our daughter would not give up so we had to give in and adjust.

Every year we discovered we loved something about these felines and finally agreed we made the right choice. Then the worst happened the first one we lost to cancer, second one to diabetes and the third one also to diabetes. It was an emotional experience to watch them go.

I made up my mind I wasn’t going to have any more pets, to me the loss was tragic. I was able to stick to my decision for a while.

My daughter’s friend complained of mice, he was advised  to  adopt a feline. He got one, a Siamese, but his frequent travel outside the city was an ongoing  problem, he had to ask my daughter to take care of it while he was away.

While my daughter did not mind  taking care of the felines occasionally, she  developed a fondness  for the kittens and wanted to have her own.

We tracked down a woman breeder, who had five kittens she wanted to sell. We got one who we named  Gabriel, a week later we noticed Gabriel was terribly insecure, we felt sorry for the little one and bought his brother, we named him Raphael.

Gabriel and Raphael are two very naughty felines, when I get too frustrated with their antics I use the water bottle to spray them.

Losing the three female felines was heart breaking for us but finding Gabriel and Raphael filled the void, now we are happy we decided to have these two rambunctious felines who keep us busy.

365 Writing Prompt: Show and tell

You’ve asked to do a five-minute presentation to a group of school children on the topic of your choice. Describe your presentation.

My presentation is about SOFT DRINK.

My presentation targets adults and not children. Children consume soda because we the adults give it to them, without thinking about the ill effects of this beverage. My intention is to make the adults aware of it , so that the children will not be exposed to this harmful drink.

Here is a list of ten reasons to avoid soft drink:

1. One can of soda contains ten teaspoons of sugar. After a long consumption of this beverage it can lead to diabetes, weight gain and other health problems.

2. Soda contains an acid which interferes with the bodies ability to absorb calcium, this can lead to osteoporosis, bone softening and also interferes with stomach acid which slows down digestion.

3. In diet sodas aspartame is used as a substitute for sugar, it is more harmful than regular pop.It can lead to  health problems like multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, diabetes and emotional disorders.

4. Most soda contains caffeine which is linked to some cancers, breast lumps, high blood pressure.

5.Simple tap water is used in soda which can contain chemicals like chlorine, fluoride and traces of heavy metals.

6. Harvard researchers have found soft drinks linked to obesity.

7. Sodas contain High Fructose corn syrup which causes long term health problems.

8. Soda has no nutritional value, it’s an unnatural substance that harms the body.

9. Soda has high sugar, sodium and caffeine. It dehydrates the body, over a long period of consumption it can cause chronic dehydration.

10. Drinking soda regularly causes plaque build up on the teeth which can lead to cavities and gum disease.

As we can see soda is responsible for a variety of problems to the human body, I feel the parents can find something better for their children to drink and themselves too.

365 Writing Prompt: Perspective

Write about the last disagreement you had with a friend or family member–from their perspective.

I wouldn’t call it disagreement but a friendly advice. My friend complains of her health, her blood pressure is up, she has diabetes, she has to lower her blood sugar, only possible way is to take a pill.

She lives in a big city, where she has a lot of friends, most of them are younger. They love  parties , so they have get together almost five times a week, this does not help her situation, the food is the problem and it is rich food means a lot of butter is used to cook it.They eat late which is 10 pm according to what I read and heard, the dinner should be eaten from 5 to 6 pm. By 7 pm everyone should stop eating to maintain good health.

When she is at home she is cautious about what she eats. She follows the time she should stop eating, it is when she goes to parties this is difficult to do.

She wants to be social, therefore she does not mind eating at 10 pm , I argue with her about it, she laughs and tells me she  cannot help going to these parties, the end result is she is hurting herself.

DP Daily Prompt: “Heart is the New Mystery” Post by Ranu

My post title helped me to discover something,I normally would not look for. It is a New York Times article on,”The New Mystery of the Female Heart”.

Men and Women are different at heart literally.

Medical scientists are both perplexed and intrigued by a growing body of evidence that shows differences in the way women and men develop heart disease. The findings suggest there may be important biological distinctions between the sexes in the functioning and development of the heart and the cardiovascular system.

So far, virtually every study of methods to treat heart disease has been done in men, with the results assumed to apply to women.this is partly because the emphasis has been to reduce the rate of heart attacks among the middle-aged, and most middle-aged heart attack victims are men. Later in life, heart attacks are leading cause of death in women too.

The experts suggest that women should continue to follow established guidelines for heart disease prevention, such as avoiding smoking and high-fat diets and curbing high blood pressure.

At a meeting of the American Heart Association in Anaheim,California, the researchers reported women who have had children tend to have wider coronary arteries, which may help their protection from early heart attacks.

Another finding highlights the inadequacy of drawing conclusions from studies of men. Researchers have found that a high level of fats called triglycerides by itself portends heart disease in women, even in the absence of high cholesterol levels. This is not true of men.

Women have different symptoms of heart disease than men. Women have pains on and off for a long time before they have a heart attack; in men chest pains are more often a sign that heart attack has begun. Women who have heart attack are twice as likely as men to die within sixty days.

Diabetes seems to eliminate the protection accorded women in their earlier years, whereas it seems to have less effect on men.
