365 writing Prompts: Helping hand

Tell us about the most surprising helping hand you’ve ever received.

Some prompts have a way of pulling together everything I’ve stored in my memory bank. Today’s prompt is asking me to think of all the good Samaritans I’ve met in my life’s journey.

One fine morning I looked out my  window and was disturbed to see the driveway, the patio, the steps leading to the patio were covered with thick snow.

It seemed mother nature had a great time covering the trees, its branches and the yard with its soft fluffy snow.First thing that hit me was how on earth will I shovel all this snow. For a moment I was lost in my thoughts, wondering what can be the best way of clearing nature’s gift. I may have dozed off for a fraction of a second when I woke up to find a young girl looking at me, I was embarrassed and instantly said, “Did you say something?”

“Yes Miss”, she said, “Do you remember me?”

I stared at her, tried to remember where I’d seen her, nothing came to mind. I had a fake smile on my face which anyone with a bit of brain would know I couldn’t really  recall who she was.

She saved me from further embarrassment by saying, “I’m Heather, Miss you taught me in grade four, don’t you remember?”

“Oh yes I do, and how are you?” I said.

Without waiting any longer she asked, “Can I help clear your driveway?”

This was something I never expected to hear.I was delirious, all I could say was, “It will be so nice!”

Across the street her friends, who were students of the university, renting my neighbor’s house were waiting for Heather, came along. There were seven of them, within an hour and a half my driveway was cleared of the twenty five cm of snow that fell overnight. I felt a mere thank you to these wonderful girls is not enough.

I bought a Turkey from the supermarket, roasted it, and prepared a salad. For dessert I baked a cake. I called them and when they carried all the food to the house, I was relieved I could return the favor!

DP Daily Prompt: Lookin’ Out My Back Door

Look at your back window…describe what you see ,as if you were trying to convey the scene to someone from another country or planet.

I am trying to describe to my brother who lives in Dhaka what I can see from my back window. My house is in the corner of two streets, the guys who plow the streets are very cruel especially when we have a snowstorm.

What is a snowstorm, it’s like when you have a cyclone,it is windy, the things are blown away and instead of rain we have this fluffy white stuff which is called snow.

When the snow blocks the streets the guy who drives the plow clears off the streets for vehicles to move freely without getting stuck. The part we don’t like is all this snow is dumped at the end of our driveway, we cannot get out if we don’t clear it by shovelling or using  a snow blower.

The unfortunate part for us is we get snow dumped at the end of our driveway from two sides, which makes the work of clearing our snow harder.

From my back window I see snow on my patio and snow on my driveway. The snow at the end of the driveway is dirty because while clearing the streets the plowman also dumps the mud, plastic bags, coffee cups and other food wraps, these are thrown by people who are not interested to keep our city clean.

I can also see my neighbor’s driveway, she keeps her path clean. The trees are naked, because when the cold weather comes the leaves fall off, and grow back when it starts to be warm.

I can also see students walking to the university,it’s hard to see their faces because they are bundled up to stay warm. You can see some vehicles moving, these are delivery trucks, the private cars leave early morning for work.

This is all, there are no flowers, pretty birds or green grass visible right now, they’ll show up soon I hope!

Writing Prompt: First light

The first thought that came to my mind was snow. These days all I can see from my window is snow and lots of it. I was thinking let me see did the guy block our driveway again.

You know what that means blocks of snow as hard as rock completely blocking ours and everyone elses’ driveway. You get up in the morning to enjoy tea or coffee and breakfast, but oh no you think of how you’re going to shovel this. So the pleasure of having breakfast is gone.

We turn on the T.V there is more bad news, we are expecting more of the white stuff, and it is going to be a blizzard, it will continue till the next day. What’s worse is the news there is another system getting ready to hit us.

I turn off the T.V. , I say nothing new snow again. Then the question pops up in my mind, will it ever stop?

The result of all this white stuff is the roads are narrow, the sidewalk is slippery, the mailman doesn’t bring any mail. There is nothing to look forward to,but heaps and heaps of the white stuff.

You no longer have to dream about a white Christmas but you might at this point change the lyrics and sing, “I’m dreaming of a green Christmas, where the tree tops are full of leaves and the children breathe a sigh of relief and say,”Oh look there is no snow anymore.”

Isn’t it lovely to see the gorgeous sun,the green grass and the colorful flowers and birds singing?

DP Daily Prompt : Dream Home Post by Ranu

Dream Home backyard 4

Dream Home backyard 4 (Photo credit: jeweledlion)

So I have won a contest to build my “Dream Home”,here is my plan: I would like to have this home built according to my specification. It has to be a bungalow. Two storeyed is not an option. I would like to have three bedrooms. Each bedroom will have an attached bathroom. I would like a large kitchen, with a lot of cupboards for the dishes and pots and pans, also a broom closet. The kitchen should be equipped with double sink.

The living and dining room should be separate.

I would like a finished basement with a family room and a bathroom as well. This is a necessity for kids who won’t have to come up to use the bathroom.

The house should have a lawn, there should be flowers of all kinds. It will be useful to have perennials. It’s cheaper to have them instead of annuals. The garden should have automatic sprinkler system.

The driveway needs to be wide,to enable at least two cars to be parked.

This just about sums up my plan I think. If I can have a house like the one I have written,it will be superb for me.
