Why did I not moisten

the dry dust of the desert with my tears?

Who knew you will come my dear

like one uninvited.

You have traveled across a desert

where there are no trees

to provide shadow.

I am so unlucky

you suffered the pain of traveling,

While I was idly spending

time in the shade

of my house.

I was unaware how

much pain you went

through by walking.

It left a scar in my heart.

Why did I not moisten

the dry dust of the desert with my tears.

Song and translation by Rabindranath Tagore Posted by Ranu

When the heart is hard and parched up,

come upon me with a shower of mercy.

When grace is lost from life,

come with a burst of song.

When tumultuous work raises its din on all sides

shutting me out from beyond,

come to me,

my Lord my lord of silence,

with thy peace and rest.

When my beggarly heart sits crouched,

shut up in a corner,

break open the door,

my king,

and come with the ceremony of a king.

When desire blinds the mind with delusion and dust,

O thou holy one,

thou wakeful, come with thy light and

thy thunder.

If you desire my return once more

to this world of happy and sad waves on the bank of this ocean.

Float my raft again, play in the

dust,

smile and float behind the deer with tears.

walk on the thorny road once more,

Whether I live or die from the wound.

You come in disguise  and make me play again___

to resume my love for this earth once more.

Leave worship prayer adoration.

Why are you sitting in the  closed  corner!

Deity

Deity (Photo credit: chooyutshing)

Hiding in the dark what are you doing

who are you secretly worshipping,

Open your eyes look__ the deity is not in your room.

He has gone where the farmers are plowing__

the place where the rocks are broken to build roads all year!

In the blazing sun, exhausted ,he is with them all,

his hands are covered with dust___

like him you should change and join us.

Freedom? where can you be free, where is freedom!

The Lord is confined with his creation.

stop meditating,leave your flower basket,

let the clothes tear, let the dust cover you__

let’s work with the deity and perspire together.

Human nature always strives for something new. Ancient or Old carries no value.Let us see what Tagore thinks of Old or Ancient . Old or Ancient is the title of his poem.

You have to leave this place,O Old ,

here a new game has begun.

The flute is playing again,  the laughter has begun.

the spring air is blowing.

In the bright blue sky            the layers of white clouds are shivering

they are exhausted  by the strong sun-light,

the birds are flapping their wings,     the branches of the trees are  trembling,

making the boys and girls play.

Right in the front              the lights are flashing,

the shadow is quivering___

a girl  sitting on a wharf       is watching the water,

and listening to the sound of leaves.

Who knows what kind of expectation is going on all around

so many people each with their happiness and sadness,

all of them have forgotten,  some are laughing some are dancing___

why do you stand in the front.

The wind is blowing away,  why are you from moment to moment

letting out a sigh in the middle of it!

far away someone is playing a flute,       why do you come here

and show your emotional outburst!

The sun is rising in the morning             it is drawing a golden picture,

why are you throwing your shadow on it!

when someone leaves             no one wants him,

still why is there so much affection for him!

Why in the evening then     behind the walls you quickly

hide and look at the surface of the earth,

in the darkness of the night            by the side of the old house

why do they come again and leave.

what did you come to see__       whatever you left behind

who will look after them!

All the souvenirs           were left for a few days

like the fallen leaves from the tree___

today  the spring air  has       sadly one at a time

blown them away every day,

they are in the dust                  their smiling lustre

is fading every minute!
