Daily Prompts: If You Leave

pad2015-s1.png (308Ă—60)

Life is a series of beginnings and endings. We leave one job to start another,we quit cities, countries or continents for a fresh start; we leave lovers and begin new relationships. What was the last thing you contemplated on leaving? What were the pros and cons? Have you made up your mind? What will you choose?

It seems to be the history of our life, we leave one city to go to another for jobs, education, and better life.

I’ve gone through all of these, now I feel I’ve accomplished everything. I needed a secure place to settle down. The decision was made jointly by my husband and I.

We realized our life of roaming around like a gypsy was over, we needed some stability. Our children were growing up, we needed to live in a city where higher studies was available for them. We’ve done the best we could, our kids were happy to be in a place where there was more than a supermarket. There were other means of entertainment.

We did not want our kids to study all day and sleep all night. As we are aware: “All work no play makes Jack a dull boy.”

We didn’t forget all the fingers in our hand are not the same size, likewise all our children will not do well in studies.

We were confronted with this problem, we had to be contented, knowing we did our best.

Then there was the subject of health, we needed to be in a city, where there were facilities to cope with any kind of health issue.

We were satisfied knowing the physicians were capable of handling major health issues.

We’ve therefore chosen to live in a city where everything is available, i.e, good schools, awesome restaurants, capable health care people and an efficient means of transportation!

Writing 101#3: One -Word inspiration

Prompts come in many different forms. Sometimes a single word is all you need to get your mind’s wheels turning. Here are six words:

Treasure

Regret

Home

Love

Uncertainty

Secret

Select one word in this list that speaks to you in some way.Have you always wanted to write about that wrong decision you made? Are you a long-term traveler looking for the right city to settle? Do you want to write about your relationship?

Regret is the word I feel speaks to me.

Although I think I’ve made right decisions in my life, my mind tells me I did not. Not working hard enough in primary and high school is one of the regrets, I have. I did not try to see what I could have accomplished if I were a little more careful in my studies earlier in life. I was happy getting passing grades without making any sincere efforts.

It is said,”Time and tide waits for no one” I heard it several times, I even loved repeating it. What I did not do is take a closer look and find out what message was  I getting from these few words.

I wanted to have a good education, I knew this was what  my parents wanted. I did accomplish this ambition. Still something tells me I should have listened to my uncle, who once told me, “Ranu you should study Philosophy.” I heard what he said but didn’t care enough to know what the subject was all about. I studied History instead, maybe I was good in remembering dates, which probably is  the reason why I opted to study   History.

Now when I look back I feel I did not make the right decision. When I read about Philosophers I find so much joy knowing, how they  entertained us with their knowledge and are continuing to do so despite the fact they are no longer among the living.

I have realized what I could have done when I was a student, the fact that I didn’t makes me unhappy sometimes.

I am happy  I got the opportunity to study about Iqbal  through online courses and Tagore, when I started blogging. Both were great philosophers in their time!

Dear participants and blogger friends, I’d love to get your feedback about my post. Thank you!

Daily Prompt: Helpless

pad2015-s1.png (308Ă—60)

Helplessness: that dull sick feeling of not being on the reins. When did you last feel like that– and what did you do about it?

I had several days like that. One of them was when my Mom told me I could only stay at my friend’s house for an hour. She was firm and I was scared.

One might think perhaps I was a teenager and a naughty one so mom had to rein me in. It was nothing like that. I had completed all my education, a master’s degree in History and an education degree as well. I was teaching in a local school.

My friend also finished her degrees like me, she came from a respectable family, her mom let her come to my house whenever she wished, but my mom was not in favor of letting me go to her house. She did not have a brother, she only had one little sister.

I felt strange that at age twenty two my mom would be so strict with me. Anyway, I did nothing I went to my friend’s house, first thing I told her was I’m only allowed to spend one hour with her. When the clock told me my time was up, I quickly hired a rickshaw and came home.

Daily Prompt: All About Me

pad2015-s1.png (308Ă—60)

Explain why you chose your blog’s title and what it means to you.

I was twelve years old when my Dad passed away. It was a sad time for us. I wasn’t able to show my dad how much I loved him. Although he is no longer with us, it gives me great pleasure to choose my blog’s title,”Sabethville”, my Dad’s name was Abdus Sabeth. He was a great inspiration to us,he worked day and night to provide us a comfortable home and the best education.

He told my mother once, a child’s education is like a foundation of a building, just as any building with a good foundation would last a long time, so will a child’s education with a good foundation bring increasing benefits. He tried his best to see us thrive. With this in mind he registered us in the best schools in the city.

My blog title makes me very proud that I was able to use my Dad’s name.

It means a lot to me when I  publish posts and read the comments of my blogger friends. I have a few dedicated friends who take the time to read my post and leave their awesome comments. I  thank them  for their positive words.

Somewhere up there my Dad is probably thinking, “I am so happy, Ranu did not neglect her education!”

Daily Prompt: Baggage Check

pad2015-s1.png (308Ă—60)

We all have complicated histories. When was the last time your past experiences informed a major decision you’ve made?

Fortunately for me I really didn’t have complicated histories.

I was twelve when my father passed away, all the decisions regarding where we’d settle was made by my Mom. She thought there was no reason to stay away from our homeland, therefore we packed our bags and left.

We settled in a small town, it provided everything we needed such as schools and colleges. After graduating from high school I  registered in the local college, completed two years and decided to go to Dhaka city to complete the rest of my education.

Things could have been complicated if my two brothers refused to pay my tuition and residence fees but they were very co-operative, they paid my fees regularly, all I was expected to do was study. I kept my end of the bargain, and successfully  completed my education without any problems.

I did not have to make any major decision like quitting school to get a job.

DP Daily Prompt: Mentor Me

pad2015-s1.png (308Ă—60)

Have you ever had a mentor? What was the greatest lesson you learned from him or her?

In the early years of my childhood, I did not have a mentor, I did whatever pleased me, i.e. ‘study less, play more.’

It displeased my older sister, that I was so carefree. I was told I’d be a failure, no education, no friends. It just did not bother me.

I studied enough to go up the ladder, it was what I wanted, work less and get more was my motto. To my surprise I wasn’t deprived of education as my sister predicted. My younger brother is the only one who said: “Ranu, you’ll do very well if you study a tiny bit more.”

I smiled and replied:  “what you want me to sacrifice my play time for studying?”

When I reached my  final  ladder, I put some thought into what I wanted  in life: I heard a soft whisper from my inner self, “become a teacher.”

It sounded terrific, then I thought it was worth giving up my playtime for doing well at that stage.

Although no one mentored me, my profs. gave me a nod every time I passed them by, meaning you are doing well, keep working.

I completed my education, ready with all the papers to apply for a teaching position. I was successful. I taught lower grades, I adored the kids I taught , they loved me. What more could I want, it was enough to carry on.

Right now I’m doing online courses and enjoying it. I work hard the laid back person has disappeared. I have two good friends who encourage me in my work, can I call them my mentors?

DP Daily Prompt: Interplannet Janet

pad2015-s1.png (308Ă—60)

You get to design your own planet: tell us about your planet– the weather, the seasons, the inhabitants. Go.

It certainly is a great idea to design my own planet. It gives an opportunity to apply the knowledge gained from the misuse of our present planet, it  will help us not to make the same mistake of polluting the environment.

Experience tells us we have changed the seasons by our misuse of our planet. We know we must not repeat the same mistakes, so that our seasons are normal.

Storage of weapons of mass destruction will be disallowed, since  war brings misery,  the minds of the people  has to be changed.

Feeling  superior than others will be discouraged, everyone will be treated the same.  They  will draw the same salary regardless of their work.

Education will be free, the parents will be encouraged to guide their children, so that education will not be thought of as a waste of time.

DP Daily Prompt: But No Cigar

pad2015-s1.png (308Ă—60)

Tell us about a time things this close to working out —but didn’t . What happened next? Would you like the chance to try again, or are you happy with how things worked out?

There was a time when I wanted to Study M.ed and prepared myself by completing B.ed.  I met Professor Elliott, who was the head of the research institute , I told him my reason to see him. He was a kind man , he told me I was too young and I had no teaching experience. The people they select were at least thirty five years  old   and I looked no more than twenty two or twenty three.

I had never seen rejection at that time. I continued to tell him I would be able to do it.He was impressed, he agreed to let me do the tests to find out how capable I was. I must have done well, they sent me a letter of acceptance.

But I was teaching in a school and they refused to accept my resignation. I informed the school authorities I’d like to join next year. They agreed.

The following year I received a scholarship to study in London, I could not give up this opportunity. I delayed my studies in the research institute by another year, they were eager to have me and were ready to have me a year later.

I had studied about destiny that we can change our destiny whenever we want, now that I think about it I’m sure it’s not always possible. I could not change mine, my aim to study M.ed was not happening.

This time it was my marriage which meant I’d move out of my country indefinitely.

I do believe in the phrase: “Man proposes, God disposes.”

I’m not sure whether I am happy or sad because I could not fulfill my ambition. Only thing that keeps me motivated and happy is , at least I am doing great with the education I have.

365 Writing Prompt: All About You

Explain why you chose your blog’s title and what it means to you.

When I decided to start blogging , I thought the best way to remember my father is to name it, “Sabethville.” My Dad’s name was “Abdus Sabeth.”

He  worked hard to raise us, he loved us and was always interested to give us a  good education.

He once told my mother, the best way to educate a child is  by registering them in a school which gives quality education to the kids. It’s like a building he said the better the foundation, the better it will be for it to withstand the test of time.

We were given the opportunity to study in a school where they had dedicated teachers who cared about our education, even though my father had to pay ten times more in tuition fees compared to the other schools, it did not bother him. I think we the siblings did okay.
