Daily Prompts: Sentimental

Write a new post in response to today’s one-word prompt.

I have some nostalgic memories of my college when I was only a teenager. I lived in the residence with thirty-two other girls. Some were younger than me some were older.

I used to be very homesick, I was unable to concentrate on my school work. The fact I was away from my mom and my siblings, gave me a lot of pain.

Fortunately I was  introduced to a girl named Evelyn Baptist. She was in my class. One day she noticed I was sitting quietly on the steps of our residence, she sat beside me and started talking to me, in the middle of our conversation, she asked,”Chaman would you like to go to a movie, it’s a  musical, Elizabeth Taylor plays the main part.”

I asked her the name of the movie, She said, “It’s The Last Time I saw Paris,  I promise you’ll love it.”

I told her I wasn’t sure. In those days my mom did not want me to watch movies. I told Evie, she said, ” oh she won’t mind when she knows how homesick you are.”

This is the song that brings nostalgic memories of my friend Evie, my Mom and my siblings.

Daily Prompt: Born to Be With You

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

Got a soul-mate and /or a best friend? What is it about that person that you love best? Describe them in great detail__leave no important quality out.

I have a best friend in fact I have two, one I met in College the other in the University. The one I met in College is Evie, she is a very thoughtful and kind person. In college She was one of my dormitory mates. She is sweet and caring, she calls me frequently, tells me not to call her, I guess she does not want me to spend money in long distance charges.

I told her it doesn’t cost me too much, but she insists she’d make the call. This shows how good natured she is. She came to Canada before me and wrote to me, at that time I had no idea I’d come to Canada too. We have kept up our friendship.

My other best friend Is Mini, I met her in the university, she and I both studied History. Mini used to send her car to pick me up when I was Dhaka, Bangladesh. There was a time I needed transportation to visit some places she sent her chauffeur every day to pick me up and go where I needed to get some of my work done. She is a very nice person who is always ready to help.

The above women are my best friends, they’d do anything for me if I needed.

Daily Prompt: Circle of Five

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

A writer once said ,” you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” If this is true which five people would you like to spend your time with?

The five people I’d like to spend my time with are 1. Valerie(my neighbor) 2. Evie ( my college friend) 3. Dilruba (my friend) 4. my daughter and  5. my brother.

All the people I have mentioned possess very unique qualities.

Valerie is an English Prof in the university, she is a delightful person. Recently she came back from Ireland after a three week trip. She brought a beautiful scarf for me.

Evie is my college friend, she has a very sweet personality, she calls me often to tell me about the places she visited. She tells me not to call her, she has a plan where it doesn’t cost her much to call. I told her it doesn’t cost me much either. She insists she’d call me. Isn’t she sweet?

Dilruba is my friend who lives in Montreal, she is very good to me when I visit her. She has three awesome kids, I love them all.

My daughter is an angel, she does a lot for me. She loves to give me gifts. I adore her.

And what can I say about my brother, he is the kindest person I know. He is a writer. He offers online courses. I love taking these courses, I must admit I have learned a lot. I thank him for all the information he provides us.

The above are the five fabulous people I love and adore. They are delightful and the most trustworthy people I know. They make our world a very happy place.

365 Writing prompts: Unknown Caller

You receive a call from an unexpected person. Who is it, and what is the conversation about? Go!

I lost touch with this person, so when she called, I could not recognize her voice. I guessed wrong.

The phone rings, ring… ring…I pick it up:

Me:    Hello

Unexpected person: Hello, Chaman, guess who?

Me: Is it Ateka?

Unexpected  person: No

Me: I don’t know, who is it?

Unexpected person: I’m Evie( she is excited)

Me: Evie? How did you get my number?(surprised)

Evie: I got it from Mrs. Abbas ( still excited)

Me:Oh Evie where are you? Are you living in Toronto?

Evie: No, I’m still in Whitby, in the same house, I have the same number.

Me: But Evie I called you once, someone picked it up and said, they’ve been living in that house, she never heard the name Evie. I thought perhaps you sold your house and moved to Toronto.

Evie:   No we didn’t sell the house. I wrote to you and my letter came back.

Me: I am so glad I found you. How did you get Mrs. Abbas’s number?

Evie : I asked Sr. Brenda, she gave me her number.

Me: Thank you Evie, I moved to St. John’s a few years ago.

Evie: Chaman I’ll call you again on Thursday.

Me: Thank you Evie, bye!

This was a real conversation between me and Evie. 🙂

About me posted by Ranu

This morning I waited for the daily prompt, there was none.

I thought my blogger friend Leslie wanted to see my photograph taken by my friend Evie when I was in college. Here it is Leslie.

Evie had a camera, she liked taking pictures, she did not spend too much time, she was always busy doing something.

The day she took the picture we all had an autograph book to get everyone to sign in and write something. Evie wrote a few lines in my autograph book and then wanted to take a picture of me.

It is our college campus where we were residing at that time. I am wearing a sari, as far as I recall I did not own one, this one belongs to someone in the residence.

In those days I always wore Shalwar(pants) kameez(shirt) and Dupatta( a long scarf).

My Dad told my Mom one day.

Why doesn’t your daughter

put cream on her face

Or comb her hair like other

Little girls do?

She never saw a village

Yet I think

She is worse than

A girl in a village.

Even  those girls

Know how to dress up

Do you think

She will ever change?

DP Daily Prompt: Snapshot Stories

Open the first photo album you can find –real or virtual, your call–and stop at the first picture of yourself you see there. Tell us the story of that photo.

This is a picture of me, it was taken by my friend, Evelyn Baptist, here I’m sitting on the grass, it is surrounded by some shrubs and plants, this is my residence in, Holy Cross College, Dhaka.

That day most of us were thinking of starting an autograph, where we could get our friends and teachers to write something and sign our names, Evie went a bit further she wanted me to wear a sari and get my picture taken to paste on the first page of my book. I agreed, if you see this picture, I’m really not sure if you can tell I was nervous in my sari,I feared the pleats may come off, and make me look like a fool.I always avoided wearing a sari, this day Evie was firm, she said, “you have to wear it.”

I must have borrowed the sari from one of the girls, I didn’t have any. I felt at ease with my Shalwar Kamiz.

This is what I wrote on the first page:

Dear friends,

Use your pen and brains

And do not let me ask in vain

When many years have passed away

And evening shadows round me play

Then shall this book of jest and truth

Recall the memories of my youth

Dear friends I once again invite

A few lines in my book to write.
