The Religion Of Forest By Tagore
And one of the elders of the city asked, Speak to us of Good and Evil.
And he answered :
Of the good in you I can speak, but not of the evil. For what is evil but good tortured by its own hunger and thirst?
Verily when good is hungry it seeks food even in dark caves, and when it thirsts it drinks even of dead waters.
You are good when you are one with yourself you are not evil. For a divided house is not a den of thieves; it is a divided house.
And a ship without rudder may wander aimlessly among perilous isles yet sink not to the bottom. You are good when you strive to give yourself .Yet you are not evil when you seek gain for yourself.
For when you strive for gain you are but a root that clings to the earth and sucks at her breast.
Surely the fruit cannot say to the root, “Be like me , ripe and full and ever giving of your abundance.”
For to the fruit giving is a need, as receiving is a need to the root.
You are good when you are fully awake in your speech. Yet you are not evil when you sleep while your tongue staggers without purpose. And even stumbling speech may strengthen a weak tongue.
You are good in countless ways, and you are not evil when you are not good.
You are only loitering and sluggard.Pity that the stags cannot teach swiftness to the turtles.
In your longing for your giant self lies your goodness: And that longing is in all of you.
But in some of you longing is a torrent rushing with might to the sea, carrying the secret of the hillsides and the songs of the forest.
And in others it is a flat stream that loses itself in angles and bends and lingers before it reaches the shore.
But let not him who longs much say to him who longs little, “Wherefore are you slow and halting?”
For the truly good ask not the naked, “Where is your garment?” nor the houseless , “What has befallen your house?”
There are a few more lessons to learn about life from the genius, will you have the patience?

Beach,mountain,forest,or somewhere else entirely?
Beach at this time of year is not a place I’d like to go.
Mountain is not a place for the same reason a beach isn’t.
Forest, cannot think of going there either.
Somewhere else maybe, where it’s not cold, no snow no cruel strong wind.
Where the sun shines everyday.
We do not have to wear heavy coats, scarves and mittens.
Where nature beckons us with open arms.
Where the grass is green and feels like velvet.
Where the colorful flowers are lined up in a row.
Where there are hamburgers and french fries,
Laid out on long tables outdoors.
Where children are laughing and playing,
And mothers are smiling and saying,
“We wish it was warm throughout the year.”
That would be the perfect place for me to visit!

Sunlight is peering through the clouds,
It’s not cloudy anymore.
We have a holiday today,
I don’t know what to do.
Which forest shall we choose to get lost?
Which playground shall we choose to run,
I will make a boat with paper,
and decorate it with flowers.
I’ll set it afloat in the large pond,
And watch it swing and float.
The shepherd and I will look after the cattle
and blow the horn.
I will roll in the jasmine bushes,
and smear myself with the scent of flowers!

Starry skies, world full of life,
I am surrounded by them,
This astonishing sight
Awakens the song in my heart.
The surging waves,
ebb and flow of tide
oscillates the world
My paternal affection rises
at this astonishing sight
and awakens the song in my heart.
On my way to the forest
my feet touches the grass,
My mind is thrilled
by the scent of flowers
that scatter the song of happiness
This astonishing sight
Awakens the song in my heart.
I listen, my eyes are wide open
I pour my heart to the world
I have discovered the unknown
In my inner self
This astonishing sight
Awakens the song in my heart!
When you gaze out your window—real or figurative — do you see the forest first,or the trees?
Where I live there are very few trees, recently my neighbor got rid of her one tree because of the worms. Now when I look out I see a patch of green grass and nothing else. My lawn at this moment has tree which only has bare branches,it’s not a pretty sight, hopefully in the next few weeks the temperature will go up and the leaves will make their way back to make the tree look half decent.
I’ll then love to gaze out my window and try to write a poem, imitating Wordsworth, until that time comes, I’ll think of Wordsworth’s poem, “I gazed and gazed but little thought what wealth the show to me had brought.”

If I was kidnapped which one of the choices would I prefer; Would I be stranded on an island, dropped into an unknown forest or locked into a strange building.
Of the three choices I’d prefer to be stranded on an island. To me the other two choices will make me claustrophobic.
I have some experience living on an island. It is open .It is surrounded by water. There is no pollution. I won’t feel trapped. Breathing fresh open air, watching clean flowing water, the sandy shores and unknown vegetation will free me from difficult situations and unpleasant experiences in a closed trapped building or a forest filled with trees, where at any moment some crazy nut will scare the daylights out of me.
On an island there’ll be more things to do. I can easily find foods like assorted berries and when I’m bored with berry picking, I’d try to catch a fish or two.
I think an island is my choice.

Do not love me only
love my song too
Who keeps track of the bird
in the forest,
when the singing stops?
Love my song too
Who wants the moon
everyone tests the moonlight
At the end of the song
the flute lies in the
middle of dust.
You will never understand
how many lamps are burned
to give off light.
Love my song too
do not love me only.
The thorny creepers
grow from tears and
blossom into flowers.
You take the flowers
what do you give in return
in the empty vessel?
The thirsty quench their thirst
from the river water,
does anyone think how
thirsty the heart of the river is
from the pain of the ocean?
Do not love me only
love my song too.
I read this poem, a number of times, I now have reached the conclusion,Tagore’s poem has a deeper meaning
than just, Two Birds living in two different places ,wanting to live together.
Readers, what do you think?
Two Birds by Rabindranath Tagore
Two birds, living in separate abodes one in a gold cage
and the other in a forest.
Once upon a time I don’t know how they met each other,
it is hard to fathom what the creator was thinking.
The bird from the forest uttered ‘my brother in the gold cage,
let us go to the forest together.’
Bird in the cage said, ‘bird from the forest, come
let’s stay in the cage quietly.’
Bird in the forest replied , ‘ No,
I refuse to be barred in the cage.
Bird in the cage remarked, ‘alas,
how will I go to the forest.
The bird in the forest sings perched outside
all the songs of the forest,
bird in the cage repeats everything by rote___
they spoke two different languages.
Bird from the forest announced ‘brother in the cage,
sing a forest song!’
Bird in the cage responded, ‘my brother of the forest,
let’s learn the song of the cage.’
The bird from the forest answered, ‘No,
I don’t want to learn a song that is taught.’
Bird in the cage replied, ‘Alas,
how will I sing a forest song.’
Bird from the forest announced, ‘the sky is deep blue,
I have no barrier ,I am free.’
Bird from the cage said, ‘the cage is neat and clean
it is covered all around.’
Bird in the forest replied, ‘set yourself free
and reach the clouds.’
Bird in the cage answered, ‘in the quiet cozy cage
capture yourself.’
Bird in the forest said,’No,
where will I fly there!’
Bird in the cage replied, ‘Alas,
where is the place in the clouds to perch!’
The birds, love each other so much,
still they are unable to stay close to each other.
Between the spaces in the cage opposite face to face,
they quietly stare at each other.
the two are unable to understand each other,
and cannot explain why?
Both alone flap their wings,
call in a piteous voice, ‘come closer.’
Bird in the forest cries, ‘No,
who knows when the cage will be shut.’
Bird in the cage replied, ‘Alas,
I don’t have strength to fly.’
