Daily Prompt : Hospitality

In response to daily post’s one-word prompt : Hospitality

I miss our dear friend whom we addressed as, ‘Auntie Jean,’   she was not a relation but treated us, my husband and children better than a relative.

We stayed with her and Uncle Harold several times, for at least a week, each time we visited her. She was warm, friendly and received us with open arms.

Her generosity and kindness towards us was exceptional, she had everything planned what we’d have for breakfast, lunch and dinner, when we stayed with her.

She met my husband at one, ‘Thanksgiving,’ and continued her generosity for a very long time. She was 94 when she passed away. I miss her, I have not found another good soul like her.

365 Writing Prompts: Tourist Trap

What’s your dream tourist destination– either a place you’ve been and loved, or a place you’d love to visit?

I had the opportunity to visit a variety of places  I loved, among them I loved Malta the best. We spent a month in the capital Valetta for teaching practice. There were quite a few of us, we were divided in groups of three and there were apartments rented for us by our administrative staff.

It was the month of June, the weather was fabulous, there was no precipitation the whole month. The landlady was a very amiable person.

One of the things I felt important was  we did not have to worry about being robbed while we were away teaching. We left our apartments unlocked for the maids to  clean the place and also to wash the dishes if we left them in the sink.

Apart from all that I found the people of Malta very friendly. We were free to visit all the places of interest. I had a good time, I’d love to go back to see the changes in Malta.

365 Writing Prompts: Free to be me

What’s the character trait you admire the most about yourself?

I like my curious nature, it helps me to study about a variety of subjects  I’m not familiar with. It keeps me interested in reading about everything in our environment. I do not pretend to know a lot of things I haven’t heard about.

I’m always willing to learn, I’ve found out I can even learn from someone younger than me. In this age of technology the younger generation know a lot more than me. I do not hesitate to learn from them.

I love to be friendly and nice provided I’m not treated poorly by my fellow humans.

DP Daily Prompt: But No Cigar

I always hoped my husband would move out of Newfoundland and settle in Ottawa,Toronto,or Montreal. It didn’t happen he kept putting it off.

We looked at houses in Ottawa, the prices were reasonable. My husband would always have a reason to say ,”No”. He liked Toronto better . His friend sent all sorts of pictures of houses on sale. He either did not like it or it is too expensive . I was disappointed but did not fuss too much.

Finally I accepted the fact, St. John’s was a city which had everything we needed. Besides big cities had too much crime on the go, pollution was a major concern . Here transportation is adequate for us our car or sometimes using the public transportation is okay where I live. There is no pollution here.

Things have worked out for me. I no longer have the desire to move into a big city. I wouldn’t like to be continuously stressed out. If I need something I can always go for a week and buy it. Life here is pleasant, comfortable and there are people who are friendly and always ready to help, should there be any need.

DP Daily Prompt: Style Icon

http://dailypost.wordpress.com/2014/01/08/daily-prompt-style-2/

I am relieved to see there are more choices in this prompt. When I think about style, to me clothing, hair or eating, even communication will have to take a back seat. I really do not give much thought to these things, except communication.

What I am thinking about is my inner feeling. I am not sure it even fits the category. I’ll write it anyway.

When I see a person in front of me,immediately my sense of feeling wakes up. The expression, the way he/she communicates, facial expression, the movement, sends some kind of vibe to me. Sometimes it is negative, sometimes not.

Negative vibe immediately puts me on my guard. I am aware I need to be careful. Under this circumstance, I make it a point to avoid this person.

When I try to read a person by his/her writing, it takes me a longer time to recognize him/her.

It seems I always chose friends based on my inner feeling. I have a few friends. I’m happy because they’re genuine.

This is how I communicate with the ones I feel comfortable. I am very friendly. I do not forget to tell them I value their friendship. I try to help them if possible. I am very cordial.

I am formal with people who I meet for the first time, depending on their behavior I am serious or friendly as the case may be.

DP Daily Prompt: The New School

KINDERGARTEN CLASS, MT WASHINGTON, 1947

KINDERGARTEN CLASS, MT WASHINGTON, 1947 (Photo credit: roberthuffstutter)

I like the idea of  redesigning  a school.  I was fortunate enough to teach in various schools.  I noticed the flaws in the education system. I was hired to teach. No one asked for my opinion. The curriculum was presented to me, I did what was expected of me,these are your students this is the curriculum devised by a handful of experts. I am paid to follow the guidelines and that was it.

In my mind there is a lot of things we ignore about children, i.e .,  these are the five year olds, who start  school in a completely new environment. They are terrified to see a stranger he/she , who is called a teacher. They need to listen and learn and stay quiet and behave.

My problem with this dictatorial method is the poor child is terrified already. He/she is put in a classroom, where these rules and regulations are placed. Whether they like it or not they have to abide by it.

My new school from kindergarten upwards will have a new system. I am calling it ‘getting to know everyone’. I will devote the first two weeks  knowing the children. Since it is the kindergarten we should not assume what they are supposed to know. We’d have to shelve that thought and actually get the children out of their seats. They’d sit in a circle . We’d pick volunteers who’d like to ask questions. The teacher would be present but will let the pupils speak. there’ll be a question and answer period.

There’ll be a fifteen minute break. During this time the teacher will observe. He/she would take notes, about each pupil. The number of pupil will not exceed twenty. It is a good number to handle.

Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic would be taught in an atmosphere where the child feels comfortable. Learning will go on in a friendly way.

To know how to read, one has to be familiar with the alphabets.  There is a song about the alphabets,it can be a very good source. Interesting pictures can encourage the child to observe and then draw his/her own.

Similar method can help with arithmetic.

The whole experience of the first day in school can make a child love or hate school. There will be homework , they will be allowed to draw pictures of things they learned in school at home and encouraged to show their work to their classmates.

I have only written about the first year of a child’s life in school.

If we succeed in keeping the children interested in their schoolwork in a friendly manner. Everything else will be easy.

St. John’s is the name of my city. It’s a port city rich in history and culture. It is the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador, the tenth province of Canada.

The population as of 2012 census is two hundred thousand six hundred.

It has one airport used for international and domestic flights.

The climate is quite cold in winter and warm in summer. sometimes it can be hot for a few days.It is mostly pleasant in summer.

The people are very friendly, they are always ready to help newcomers.

We have one university, the name is ‘Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador’,students come from all parts of Canada and there are plenty of international students. The tuition fees is the lowest compared to other universities in Canada.

I like living here,I can find everything I need from different foods to clothing and transportation.
