Fiction: The Porcelain Doll

Lillie McFerrin Writes

Monica wanted a porcelain doll as her birthday present, the parents gladly bought one and reminded her to follow the instruction, “How to take care of her prized possession.”

She dressed her doll the best way she could, she was happy to see how gorgeous her doll looked, she named it, “Nefertiti”, the Egyptian queen.

Her friend Patricia heard about Monica’s doll and came to see if it was as pretty as her classmates told her, to her surprise she didn’t think she’d seen a doll prettier than Monica’s, her friend’s reluctance to let her touch the doll infuriated Patricia, she made plans to steal it and bury it in the ground.

After her friend left that day,Monica remembered seeing something in Patricia’s looks which made her concerned, was her friend thinking of something evil was all she thought about the whole day, she fell asleep early evening, suddenly she woke up in the middle of the night and found her doll missing, she looked out the window and found Patricia digging a hole in the ground, slowly the doll was laid in the hole and the ground was covered up,Monica let out a horrific scream, she started crying and yelling, “How could you do this to me?”

The noise awakened the parents, mom and dad came running to see what was going on, they found Monica crying and yelling, “She buried my doll,” the parents rummaged the room frantically, they found it neatly tucked away in the doll- house!

Raphael and Gabriel

About two months ago my daughter and I thought of adopting a kitten. We got in touch with  a breeder of kittens, she had informed us her kittens were ready to be adopted. We were excited,my daughter went to the house of the breeder and picked one she liked, it was a Sunday when our new kitten arrived, it was tiny and scared it hid under the covers was afraid to eat or use the litter, we were concerned there were very few things we could do to make the little kitten comfortable. I thought maybe we should get his brother from the breeder.

My daughter went right away to get one of his brothers. The change I saw in the kitten was remarkable, it was happier and was not afraid anymore. The brother however was a bit scared,it was another challenge we had to overcome but having his brother with us made things easier.

We named them Gabriel and Raphael, Gabriel has a mind of his own, he doesn’t let us touch him when he is not in a mood , but Raphael is very affectionate and friendly with anyone who visits us. We like him to be friendly but are a bit concerned if he is too friendly.

They are four months old and developing their own personality, which is nice to watch. The past week was too warm for the felines, they meowed a lot to tell us they were not comfortable we did our part we turned on the fans and opened the windows.

Today it is a cooler day, the kittens are delighted, they are sleeping.

Since there is no daily prompt for today I used the day to write about our gorgeous kittens!

Writing Prompt: First light

The first thought that came to my mind was snow. These days all I can see from my window is snow and lots of it. I was thinking let me see did the guy block our driveway again.

You know what that means blocks of snow as hard as rock completely blocking ours and everyone elses’ driveway. You get up in the morning to enjoy tea or coffee and breakfast, but oh no you think of how you’re going to shovel this. So the pleasure of having breakfast is gone.

We turn on the T.V there is more bad news, we are expecting more of the white stuff, and it is going to be a blizzard, it will continue till the next day. What’s worse is the news there is another system getting ready to hit us.

I turn off the T.V. , I say nothing new snow again. Then the question pops up in my mind, will it ever stop?

The result of all this white stuff is the roads are narrow, the sidewalk is slippery, the mailman doesn’t bring any mail. There is nothing to look forward to,but heaps and heaps of the white stuff.

You no longer have to dream about a white Christmas but you might at this point change the lyrics and sing, “I’m dreaming of a green Christmas, where the tree tops are full of leaves and the children breathe a sigh of relief and say,”Oh look there is no snow anymore.”

Isn’t it lovely to see the gorgeous sun,the green grass and the colorful flowers and birds singing?
