Daily Prompts: YAWN

What bores you?

I very easily get bored, when I invite friends to dinner at six and they come at eight, the two hours that I have to wait, makes me very irritable. There are many reasons, the food that I cooked to serve at six, has to wait for the guests. When I have to wait for two extra hours, the food gets cold, it loses its flavor and the most important part is we are hungry, but cannot eat because our guests haven’t arrived.

Another place I’m bored is at the doctor’s office. When my appointment is at 10.30 am I leave the house to go to  the doctor’s office at 9.45 am, so I’m there on time.  If I’m seen by the doctor at 12.30, it means I’ve lost half of my day. Some doctor’s office have magazines to entertain the patients, but when I check I find they are at least three years old. There are pages missing, they are in poor condition and are not fit to read. I end up sitting and hoping I’ll be seen soon.

Writing 101 Day Eleven: Size Matters (in sentences)

Today’s Prompt: Where did you live when you were twelve years old? which town, city and country? Was it a house or an apartment? A boarding school or a foster home ” An airstream or an RV? Who lived there with you?

Today’s twist: pay attention to your sentence lengths and use short, medium, and long sentences, as you compose your response about the home you lived in when you were twelve years old.

Situated in Punjab, Pakistan is the city of Rawalpindi. It was restored by Jhanda Khan after the devastation by the white Hun. This was the  place where I lived when I was twelve years old.

Our house was located  on Peshawar Road. At the front, close to the main road were three majestic Eucalyptus trees, the scent of their leaves awakened the passers by who looked curiously at them.Behind the trees was a  fence  built with bricks, it was a tottering one , ready to collapse any moment. The herd of buffaloes obliged us by leaning on it. The fence came crashing down which made extra work for the gardener and the servant.

The house was a large one, it had to be, to accommodate fourteen living souls, Mom, Dad, and the kids.

In all there were twelve rooms, four larger, eight smaller with attached bathrooms.

Mom and Dad occupied one  large room. The bossy older sister wanted one large enough to entertain her friends, one was designated for our parents’s  friends, and the left-over for us unimportant kids.

Kitchen was a separate building where my mom cooked and the two servants, prepared the vegetables and washed the dishes.

Hi all I’ll appreciate your feedback. Thank you. 🙂

365 Writing Prompt: Comfort zone

What are you more comfortable with — routine and planning, or laissez-faire spontaneity?

Normally I am comfortable with both, routine and planning is necessary when I invite people for dinner. I have to decide how many people I can accommodate in my living-dining rooms combined.

Accordingly I invite the friends. I have to plan the menu, meat, chicken or fish which one or ones my guests like. Next is salad and cooked vegetables.

Dessert is something I try to keep simple, I spend a lot of time preparing the main course, for beverage I serve water, I avoid pop, there are times I feel some of my guests prefer pop.

Tea and coffee I serve with dessert.

When I don’t have guests I keep it simple, some days I’m happy with left overs, if I do not have it, I cook chicken or fish and serve this with a plain vegetable dish and boiled rice.

DP Daily Prompt: Connect the Dots

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

Open your nearest book to page 82. Take the third full sentence on the page, and work it into a post somehow.

He smiles.

I entered my living room to look for a book, suddenly I felt there was someone else, besides me, I turned around, at first I could not recognize him, he called my name, I looked up straight at him and asked, ” what brings you here?”

My unfriendly question took him by surprise. He smiles. ” Wow you’ve changed he said, do you always welcome your guests this way?”

It was my time to reply, “not really I said, you always show up when you want something, I’m afraid today is a bad day I’m in no mood to give you anything, please leave.”

He stood up I could see clearly he was disappointed, I was in a sour mood and was hardly in a giving mood, he quietly left without saying another word.

It was a few years ago my brother Waseem wrote a book, he sent the draft to one of his friends, I knew nothing about it, I was angry, he did not trust me enough to let me know about his book.

His friend liked what he wrote, he published it in his name, my brother found out about it but took no action against his friend.

This was the first time I saw my brother, I was still annoyed with him  for being so stupid, he trusted anyone and everyone but could not trust his own sister, somehow he thought if it’s a friend, he is trustworthy.

I could not believe he’d come after all these years to see me, after he left I got ready to go out to run some errands, on my way out I saw something in the mailbox, it was an envelope I picked it up, came inside to see who left this piece of mail for me.

It was a note from my brother, he apologized for not trusting me, this time he said, “I’ve written another book I  want you to read the draft and let  me know what you think.”

Those words made me so happy, I instantly forgave him and invited him to come to the house for dinner!

365 Writing prompts: Sink or Swim

Tell us about a time when you were left on your own, to fend for yourself in an overwhelming  situation— on the job, at home, at school. What was the outcome?

I remember once my mom went to see her sister-in-law out of town. My younger siblings and I were left to fend for ourselves, it would be fine if it was just us.

One fine morning my aunt and uncle arrived with their kids, mom was not at home, we had a servant who took care of getting groceries and cleaning the house.

I was barely fifteen, had no experience in cooking , I could do the simple stuff, but wasn’t good enough for company. My aunt was one of those people who was not fond of any kind of housework like cooking or cleaning, it was always done by her four daughters, they were younger than me.

My mom had no idea she had her house full of guests, she was having a grand time with her sister-in-law in the village.

I did the cooking, I’m not sure how good or bad it was , my aunt and her brood were satisfied as long as they didn’t have to cook.

My mom came back after a week, my aunt told my mother, ‘Ranu is a good cook!’

My mother and I knew it wasn’t true, but she  was happy I was able to look after my aunt, uncle and their children.

I was nervous in the beginning but as days went by I became somewhat confident that no one will be sick eating what I served!

DP Daily Prompt: Worst Case Scenario

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

Of all the awful possibilities, what’s the worst possible thing that could happen to you today?

I do not want to end up with a house full of unannounced guests. My dishwasher which is hardly used does not work, the city has started rolling black outs and the supermarket is empty. There is no food left. I’m about to tear my hair because there is nothing I can do.

I can handle the dishwasher problem by washing the dishes myself.

The rolling black outs will be a major problem, I have an electric stove, no electricity means I won’t be able to cook for my hungry guests.

Lack of food in the supermarket will be difficult, even if all the other things were in super condition.

The only way I’d solve all of this is by taking the guest out to dinner, they could order anything they want, but wait what if after eating as much as they could, I go to pay the bill, I open my hand bag and find my wallet missing, the anxiety, the embarrassment would make me run for cover. Can so many things go wrong in one day, it can if I am unlucky.

Thank God it’s imaginary!
