#Everyday Inspiration,Day Five: Hook ‘Em With a Quote

Day Five: Hook ‘Em With A Quote.’
“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.”

__Bernard M. Baruch

I like this quote, it gives me a lot of pleasure. I always followed my mind. I have a sibling who is too particular of her attire. I think she loses a lot of sleep over what she’d wear, what looks good etc.

These are some things I find is a waste of time. Her idiosyncrasies at times rubbed me the wrong way. For instance she said, ‘Ranu do not tell anyone you have a B.ED degree’

‘Why?’ I said.

‘People will make fun of you.’ was the reply.

I told her, ‘I do not care.’

When I completed my education, my eldest brother forced me to apply for a job where my sibling was the principal. I told him I will not accept the job if I get it.

My aim was to teach in a school, but my brother thought, there’s a huge difference between teaching in a school or in a college.

‘Do you like the title school teacher or College lecturer.’ He said.

‘I’m not concerned about titles, I want to do something that pleases me, I’E, teach young children.’

The result of the interview was out, I was selected to teach in the college. I turned it down, much to the dismay of my brother.

I didn’t mind the rules and regulations of the schools where I studied. We had to wear uniforms, I did not have any problems obeying the rules.

I have no issues wearing a mask when I go out in public in this age of pandemic. Those who break it are not only endangering themselves but the whole community.

As long as I’m comfortable with the decisions I make, I’ll always be myself, regardless of what people think.

I came to this world alone and I’ll leave it alone. I see no harm living my life the way it suits me.

Day Five: Hook ‘Em With a Quote

Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.____ Bernard M. Baruch

I chose Bernard M. Baruch’s quote, it makes me feel, there is someone out there who inspires me to speak my mind.

My mom always told me  I was too outspoken. I tried to convince her, I don’t like to pretend who I’m not.

Her words of wisdom was: ‘people will dislike you, they’ll ostracize you.’

When my mom was trying to change me, I wasn’t aware then that there was someone who wanted us  to say what we  feel. I did face criticism for speaking my mind, some gave me a weird look, but there were others who  liked the way I am because I did not pretend.

Day Five : Hook ‘Em  With a Quote

Don’t limit a child to your own learning, for she was born in another time.

___ Rabindranath Tagore

I read a lot of quotes of many authors, this one awakened my mind. The poet is right to caution us how we ought to teach our kids.

Two days ago I saw a boy hardly four was busy with his cell phone, though I don’t know whether he was writing a story or playing a game, what amazed me is the fact he knew how to use it.

I compared him to me, when I was that little, I doubt I knew the word telephone, today I watch and see little kids around me with a telephone, either talking with his friend or doing  a crossword puzzle.

We still can guide the little ones about the world of today, but it’s better to let them learn their daily studies as they please, I suppose this is what the poet is telling us to do!

“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.”__ Bernard M. Baruch

I try to be me all the time, regardless of what people think. I never hesitate to let my feelings known, it doesn’t matter what kind of  reaction I  get from people around me, I speak my mind; some may like it, others may not. I know no matter what I do or say I’ll never please everyone, therefore it is wise  not to  try.

It reminds me of a story I read about a man, his son and his donkey. He listened to all the people who passed him by, each group had a different opinion, he tried to do as he was told, in the end he lost his donkey.

These are stories that tell us we must not listen to other people’s opinion, if we do we’ll be a loser in the end.

Writing 101, Day five: Hook ’em with a quote

Today’s assignment:  Hook ’em with a quote

Rabindranath Tagore says:

Don’t limit your child to your own learning, for she was born in another time.

Rabindranath Tagore is one of those personalities, who provided us with music, poetry and prose. I have learned a lot from his songs, poems, fiction and non-fiction. Today I feel it is time for me to honor him by using his quote.

As a child I asked many questions, but no one wanted to answer them.My eldest brother tried to stop me by using the famous quote,“curiosity killed a cat.”

When I read Tagore’s quote, I felt I wish I could ask him about certain things I was curious about.

It is true sometimes a child’s questions baffle us, we adults try to stop him/her, because we feel children’s knowledge should be limited to the alphabets, for they are too young to know more than the letters.

Once my colleague complained about her five year old son, “He is not cooperative,” she said.

“Why are you saying this ?” was my question.

She then told me, his kindergarten teacher complained, he refuses to participate in their classroom activities.

It seems the five-year old children were introduced to colors, each time the teacher mentioned a specific color, one of the kids was asked to run and stand on that color. When Jay’s turn came, he looked the other way.The teacher was upset and complained to his mother, that her son was not paying attention.

Jay knew all the colors and thought it was too stupid to run and stand on the color. This is one example, there are many others. This is where Tagore says, “Don’t limit a child to your own learning, for she was born in another time.”

Our world has changed a lot, back when I was a kid, we never heard of cell phones, today I see little ones with a cell phone on his palm. I’m awed by this, it makes me want to see what kind of messages are they sending to their friends.

Yes with every new generation we find kids know more than I ever did at that age. I’m not embarrassed for I know, our minds were limited to know what was available in our time. Today if we hold our children back on the presumption it’s well beyond their age, we’d be doing them a disservice. “As they are born in another time.”
