Daily Prompt :Avid

In response to daily post’s one-word prompt : Avid

Once upon a time I was an avid fan of the NHL games. I gave up watching it. There were issues in the game, I as a fan could not control. Each period was supposed to be an hour. Every time the referee blew the whistle the game stopped. The stop didn’t count how long they were on the ice but only how long they played.  This meant the one hour period would take as long as an hour and a half.

Added to the problem was the players fighting on the ice. This lengthened the period even more. No matter how ardent I was to know the result, my hunger for watching it diminished,  I started questioning myself, if all this  was  worth watching a game which would continue till the wee hours of the morning. It shortened my sleep time, which resulted in drowsiness throughout my work.

It wasn’t good for my teaching career. I decided to do what was best for me, quit watching these games!

Daily Prompt: Sleepy time

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

More and more of us go to bed too late because of sleep procrastination. What are the nighttime rituals that keep you up before finally dozing off?

There are not a whole lot of things I do before going to sleep. what keeps me up is the prayer time. In summer because the days are long my prayer time is later in the evening. One prayer is after sunset, the last one is an hour and half later. There is not much I can do to change it .

In winter the sunsets much earlier, so I have plenty of time to sleep at 10:30 pm which is my usual time.

This past month because of Ramadan i.e the fasting month, I can sleep by 11:00 PM then wake up again at 2:00 AM for breakfast, although I have a hard time eating, I try to eat something to be able to fast for nineteen hours, during which time we can neither eat nor drink anything. My sleep schedule is completely different.

There are ten days left to complete the thirty days of fasting, after this there is another six days which is optional fasting. I try to fast this time for what I call bonus points to be added to my good deeds.

The fasting month is a reminder to us humans about those unfortunate souls who are deprived of food day in and day out, it makes us feel their pain of hunger so we can  make an effort to help them!

Five sentence fiction: Hunger

Lillie McFerrin Writes

My friend Nasreen is a voracious reader, any book I give her she reads without reading the title.

To test her I gave her a cookbook, it had recipes of a variety of foods, she grabbed it and began reading from the first page, I thought this is an odd behavior, no one I know reads a cook book unless he/she is looking for a particular recipe.

Morning turned to noon, it was lunch time Nasreen never put her head up,she was totally immersed, I called her a few times she just made a peculiar noise.

I was so annoyed I snatched the book from her, this surprised her, she said: Did you not want me to read this book, I was enjoying it, I tried to see if reading about food will arouse my hunger, my mom tries everything to make me eat, but I always refuse.

I apologized repeatedly, I didn’t know she had an eating disorder!

DP Daily Prompts: No Excess

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

“Perhaps too much of everything is as bad as too little.”— Edna Ferber

Do you agree with this statement on excess?

I agree too much of everything is as bad as too little.

One of the things I find troubling  is those who are affluent, how much food they waste, the adults and  their children don’t hesitate to throw away food which was cooked for them because suddenly they have a craving for fast food, so they decide to leave to go to a fast food place to satisfy their craving.

Then there are people looking in the garbage to find food that’s thrown away by some rich kid. They are prepared to eat anything they find to satisfy their hunger.

This is when I think some have too much others have too little there is no balance.

365 days Writing Prompt: You’ve got the power

You have the power to enact a single law. What would it be?

If I had the power, I’d make sure no one in the land is hungry. We all need food for sustenance, without it we are weak, we think of unimaginable things of how to get  food to satisfy our hunger, there have been stories of people eating human flesh to survive.

Hunger makes people steal, kill, it changes one’s personality, this is one thing that should be taken care of before we think of anything else.

Writing Prompt: Think Global, Act Local

I am not completely sure what the prompt means. I have taken a few moments to think. My mind tells me “what do you think is the global problem.” I believe hunger is the most important problem in our present world. There are more people hungry than are not. So I’d have to think about my own community first.Hoping everyone will do the same. “They say charity begins at home”.

I feel I must find out how many  families in my community is having this problem. There are volunteers who regularly make sure people are getting enough.

Our post office workers go door to door to collect non-perishable food. I make sure I donate.

DP Daily Prompt: Do you Believe in Magic?

No Evils-01061

No Evils-01061 (Photo credit: subsetsum)

I do believe sometimes we come across certain occasions which make us think this really is magic. I wouldn’t mind transforming  into a mystical being.

I’d like to have the power to cure certain incurable diseases, wipe out hunger, transform evil people and make them good.

There are a number of diseases I hear about that are incurable. I want the power to cure them. When we hear the word cancer,we immediately give up . It shouldn’t be like that.

I would love to wipe out hunger with my power. There are millions of people old ,young ,men , women and children who are starving everyday. It would be awesome if I get the power to wipe out hunger for ever.

We have a lot of people who cannot help but turn to evil ways.

I think most of the time circumstances make them evil. when someone goes without food for several days, they make wrong choices, they either steal or kill. All I can do is remove the problem of course I must have the power.

I’d welcome transforming into a mystical being.

DP Daily Prompt: EarWorm Post by Ranu

My favourite is John Lennon’s song:  “Imagine”

Imagine there’s no heaven

Imagine There's No Hunger - Strawberry Fie...

Imagine There’s No Hunger – Strawberry Fields – Central Park, NYC (Photo credit: asterix611)

It’s easy if you try

No hell below us

Above us only sky

Imagine all the people living for today

Imagine there’s no countries

It isn’t hard to do

Nothing to kill or die for

And no religion too

Imagine all the people living life in peace

You, may say

I’m a dreamer ,but I’m not the only one

I hope some day you’ll join us

And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions

I wonder if you can

No need for greed or hunger

A brotherhood of man

Imagine all the people sharing all the world

You, may say

I’m a dreamer,

But I’m not the only one

I hope some day you’ll join us

And the world will live as one

This song speaks to me,in a way nothing else can.It has everything that tells me how to make the world a better place. The assortment of countries, possessions, greed, hunger, religions, all these are the problems of the world. Remove them and there will be peace and tranquility.

It’s my thought.
