Daily Prompt: Take Care

pod-2016-sm.png (308×60)

When you’re unwell, do you allow others to take care of you, or do you prefer to soldier on alone? What does it take for you to ask for help?

Normally if I’m unwell because of a cough or cold, I take care of it myself. There are times I’d like to get help. A while ago I suddenly felt very ill, my legs were tired, I had difficulty breathing, I told my husband I really felt  sick. He of course did not take it seriously, he was of the opinion, I had gained weight therefore all I had to do was to lose the excess weight.

This feeling of being unwell went on for some time. One day  I  told my husband, I was really sick. I explained the symptoms, he got very concerned, he immediately made an appointment for me to see  an internist.

I went to see this physician one day. He looked at me and asked me to tell him in detail, how I felt. As I spoke he listened quietly, when I finished, he told me right away, I had hypothyroid, and I’ll have to take off from my teaching job for six weeks.

I realized it was too long, what will the kids do, if I’m off for so long.  When I told him how I felt about it, he explained I needed rest and I must not worry about the kids, it was the responsibility of the administration to find a substitute to replace me for that period of time.

This was the time I needed help, I could not fix my problem by myself.

365 Writing Prompts: Moment of Kindness

Describe a moment of kindness, between you and someone else–loved one or complete stranger.

My friend Asha was interested to learn how to make our famous dessert of Bangladesh. It is called in Bengali, “Rasho Golla”, the English translation is Cheese balls in Syrup.

She lived close to my house, she told me before she cannot figure out recipes, if I’d be willing to go to her house and show her exactly how it’s made.

I asked her to get the ingredients I needed, she bought them and called me. I went to her house showed her how to make them from beginning to end.She was pleased. Her husband came into the kitchen with “Dopey Eyes”, looked at the dessert and said to me , ” you have used so much sugar to make this?”

Well my kindness was unrewarded!

DP Daily Prompt:

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

The clock struck one, she awakened in a dark room, “where is everyone she thought?”

She was very sick all day, she fell asleep in her room, since it was broad daylight there was no need to turn on the lights.

No one called her for supper may be she complained of stomach sickness, her husband didn’t think she should eat. The quiet dark night scared her, she wondered if they left some food for her. She was faint with hunger, she wanted to go to the kitchen to get something to eat.It was pitch dark occasionally she heard the sound of a fox, which unnerved her senses, “is this creature in my house she was too terrified to think?”

She cautiously left her bed took slow measured steps, to avoid waking up the rest of her family. Something was not feeling normal, what might it be, she walked two steps stopped, listened, ‘thank God she said there is no one.’

Fear can always make one think of unusual things, like someone appearing before you unannounced, this was the feeling Shelley had as she walked into the kitchen. She was glad the fridge was not too far from her, she quickened her pace and reached the refrigerator, when she opened it there was a loud thud, some creature came out of it and started singing and dancing, with a pounding heart she immediately closed the door, she could not remember why she was there.

Lack of food made her weak the appearance of the creature was no help for her psyche, she went back to bed and kept praying so sleep would help her regain her composure.

Shelley wasn’t aware how long she slept, she felt someone shaking her and saying, “Wake  up you sleepy head it’s time for breakfast.”

The word “Breakfast” brought uncontrollable tears in her eyes, oh how she hoped she could eat something, anything, with a growling stomach Shelley went into the dining room, the table was set with all kinds of delicious food prepared by her husband Sam. Before she started to eat she asked, “did you hear that terrible thud last night?”

“What thud they all said at once!”

DP Daily Prompts: Call Me Ishmael

Take the first sentence from your favorite book and make it the first sentence of your post.

“So, then. You want a story and I will tell one.”

I just want to caution you readers, please do not be sad, sadness is a part of life, this woman seems to have the lion’s share in this department, or God thought she  can endure it better than anyone in her family.

This story begins in a very small town, there are only ten thousand people here, it includes men women and children old and young.

My story focuses on a particular family, there was the wife the husband and soon there was an addition a child. The parents spent most of their free time looking after her.

Then the wife gets a job she has to leave the little infant in the care of a baby sitter, it was not something the parents wanted to do, the times were difficult two jobs were better than one.

Days were passing by smoothly until the first baby sitter decided to quit her job. It was a trying time for the parents, they were looking for another baby sitter, luckily they found one.

She was the mother of five children, she was looking for a job any job, baby sitting was not the kind of  job she wanted, she accepted it as she waited for some other lucrative job. In the meantime the small family of three were happy to find someone to take care of their little one.

Two years and some months later there was an addition to the family another daughter, meanwhile the family needed another baby sitter to look after two babies the previous   baby sitter left after she landed a very good job.

The family found one, this new baby sitter was very helpful, she not only looked after the two kids, she also baked bread and cooked dinner for the family. Life was good the kids were happy and so were the parents.

The kids passed different stages of their life and soon they were leaving home for higher studies. After completion they went their separate ways for jobs in cities they liked. They were successful.

The second child however always told her sister, she wants to live as far away from her parents as possible, she was finally in control of her destiny, and did not feel the need for parents because it would mean having them over and entertaining them, she didn’t mind making the occasional phone call    she didn’t want to lose her  inheritance  after the death of the parents. The second one is happy, she has her own place, to make sure none of her parents came to visit her she emailed her mother, she said,”I only want to have a courteous relationship with you.”

This was unexpected the mother had just finished saying her morning prayer, she turned her computer on  and found this message, as shocking as it was she did not delay writing her back, she wrote “You do not need to have any kind of relationship courteous or otherwise.” then she mailed it!

DP Daily Prompt: Leftovers Sandwich

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

Today, publish a post based on unusual material from a previous piece–a paragraph you nixed, a link you didn’t include, a photo you decided not to use. Let your leftovers shine!

In one of my previous post I wrote about Mr. Melendy, how thoughtful he was, I wasn’t able to thank him enough for his kindness.

I didn’t mention another thing he did for me. He called me one day and asked if I’d be interested to go to St John’s, because he was going and it’d be no trouble for him to pick me up from my house, he knew my husband was in the hospital and I might want to go to see him, I was delighted but had a bit of a problem, I had our two cats in the house and I wondered if he’d mind taking them along.

I was surprised when he said, ‘sure take them along.’

I did feel guilty, but Mr. Melendy did not mind taking me and the cats in his vehicle all the way to St. John’s, which is two hundred miles from Gander.

He was unbelievably kind, in case you are wondering I could not rely on anyone in Gander to look after the felines!

DP Daily Prompt: Wrong Turns

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

When was the last time you got lost? Was it an enjoyable experience or a stressful one ? Tell us about it.

The last time we got lost was a while ago. We were returning to Gander from Waterville Maine, my husband was driving, there were two possible routes we were told by the man in a garage, one was shorter than the other. I told my husband to take the  I 95 route but he wanted to take the shorter route, unfortunately my husband had the habit of driving faster than the speed limit, on our way we saw oncoming cars flashing their light, I did not understand what it meant neither did my husband. He continued to drive above speed limit, suddenly we saw a traffic police, he raised his hand to stop.

My husband according to him was driving 75 mph, where the limit was 60 mph. He took the licence number and slapped us with a $100 .00 ticket. My husband learned the hard way that he should obey the traffic rules. It was a funny experience how my husband was trying to explain, he really wasn’t speeding, because of the downhill it seemed he was. This kind of lame excuse did not satisfy the guy, he wrote the ticket anyway.

DP Daily Prompt: An Ounce of Home

You’re embarking on a round-the-world-adventure, and can take only one small object with you to remind you of home. What do you bring along for the trip?

If I’m only allowed one small object on my year long round-the world-adventure. If I’m away from home for 365 days, it is impossible to take one small object with me, let me think some more about this.

I will have to take my family photograph. I have a lot of memories of the day this picture was taken. The photographer gave us our appointment for 11:30 am. Neither my husband nor I thought anything about the time we were given the kids were very young, the youngest one was less than two.

By the time the photographer got the place ready it was past lunch time, the youngest one came to me without saying anything she opened my bag and started looking, this was one of those days when mom didn’t have a candy in her bag. The poor child was so hungry she started crying, my husband blamed me for not carrying some food in my bag. The damage was done no matter how much I was blamed the little one’s hunger would not go away.

The clueless photographer as they all do thought she did not like her picture taken, the crying was getting louder and we were embarrassed, I told my husband to tell the photographer the reason she was crying, little thing like that made my husband stick to his pride, he was not going to say his child is hungry. I thought it was time for me to speak, I said,”She is hungry.”

The photographer apologized and found a lolly pop, gave it to the hungry child and calmness returned. this I think will be excellent, because I’d think of the day the young one cried.
