365 Writing Prompts: Moment of Kindness

Describe a moment of kindness, between you and someone else–loved one or complete stranger.

My friend Asha was interested to learn how to make our famous dessert of Bangladesh. It is called in Bengali, “Rasho Golla”, the English translation is Cheese balls in Syrup.

She lived close to my house, she told me before she cannot figure out recipes, if I’d be willing to go to her house and show her exactly how it’s made.

I asked her to get the ingredients I needed, she bought them and called me. I went to her house showed her how to make them from beginning to end.She was pleased. Her husband came into the kitchen with “Dopey Eyes”, looked at the dessert and said to me , ” you have used so much sugar to make this?”

Well my kindness was unrewarded!

DP Daily Prompt:I Have Confidence in Me

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

Are you good at what you do? What would you like to be better at?

When I first came to Gander, Newfoundland. I was disappointed with the loaves of bread we bought. They were always moldy. I decided to bake bread myself. I never had to bake bread before, fresh bread was available in a lot of shops in Montreal.

It wasn’t the case in Gander. So I announced I will bake my own bread. My husband was doubtful, my friend told me it won’t work, when I asked  why she was discouraging me. Her reply was she had tried but failed the loaves of bread she baked turned out as hard as bricks. “Please do not try she said you’d be disappointed.”

I was given a cookbook “Better Homes and Gardens,” for Christmas by one of my husband’s friends.

I took out the book made a list of the ingredients and bought them  from the nearby Super market, my husband told me it was a waste of time. I ignored him I knew how can I say I cannot do it without trying.

The first six loaves of bread was not so soft, it tasted good. I knew it would get better when I bake bread regularly. After a few weeks my bead came out perfect. I stopped buying bread from the Super market. I was glad I did not listen to my friend or my husband.

I was confident once I started baking bread, it will be better than the bread we bought from the store,

NaBloPoMo “My Mom’s famous Kebab” Ranu’s post https://sabethville.wordpress.com

My Mom was a very good cook. Anything she cooked was amazing. We all loved to eat. We seldom asked  how she turned out these delicious meals. I watched  when she cooked.  It looked so easy. I thought I can do this too. The ingredients she used were, slices of beef ,same size potatoes, onions were sliced thin, the tomatoes were thin slices too. In addition she used whole dry peppers, peppercorn and cinnamon sticks, there were whole cloves, salt, yoghurt and oil or clarified butter.

She used a round pot for this amazing dish. She had the ingredients in separate bowls. The layering of these ingredients was carefully done. she put a tablespoon of oil or clarified butter in the pot and spread it evenly. She carefully laid the beef ,followed  by three or four dry red peppers, a few peppercorns, some cloves, salt, and one or two half inch cinnamon sticks. Then  potatoes were layered on top making sure they covered the meat, onions went on top and tomatoes on the top layer. On each layer the oil and the yoghurt mixed with ground ginger, garlic ground cumin and ground coriander was spread as well. If she had some ingredients left, she’d repeat the layering. When everything was neatly in the pot, she put the cover on.

It was put on a charcoal stove, to give it the effect of an oven, she put hot charcoal on the cover. It took about an hour. When the lid was taken off,the aroma made us rush to the dining room. We didn’t need any bells!

The Daily Post: “Local” Experience

The best “local” experience we had, when we all went ‘Blueberry’ picking. It was a day in August,it was overcast and cold. We found out from our neighbour, this would be a fabulous day for blueberry picking. The best spot to find a lot of blueberries will be near the old railway tracks.

We all dressed up in our casual clothes, took a few buckets and set off for berry picking. At first we could not find the spot, soon one of my daughters saw some people, busy doing something,we were not sure what they were doing .We decided to follow them.To our surprise they were picking berries,we were thrilled,we went slightly away from them. There were tons of blueberries. We started picking them as fast as we could.Soon we filled all our buckets. We carried the buckets and loaded  them in the trunk of the car and came home.

When we reached home we realized we had picked too many. I used some of the berries to make a batch of muffins for us.

Recipe for Blueberry Muffins:

Ingredients:

1. one and three quarter cup all-purpose flour

2.one-fourth cup sugar

3.two and a half tablespoon -baking powder

4.three-fourth teaspoon –salt

5.1 well beaten egg

6.three-fourth cup milk

7. half-cup salad oil

8. 1 cup fresh blueberries

Sift dry ingredients into a mixing bowl; make well in the center.Combine egg, milk, and salad oil.Add all at once to dry ingredients, add the cup of blueberries, gently stir until the dry ingredients are moistened, use a serving spoon to stir. Make sure the batter is not beaten till smooth, this is to avoid muffins from becoming tough.

Fill greased muffin pans with batter,it should only be two-thirds full. You can also use paper bake cups.Bake at 400 degrees for about 25 minutes or less if your oven is hotter. The muffins should be golden in colour. It will make about a dozen muffins.

We froze the rest of the blueberries and planned to give some to friends and neighbours.
