My first musical instrument I learned to play was a harmonium. I did not own one, mom thought I’d neglect my studies. I used to go to a neighborhood girl my age at that time to learn how to play this instrument and also learn to sing.

Without one at home I was unable to practice what I learned. I was able to practice once a week when I went to her house. In the meantime I graduated from high school, the girl’s mother died and she moved away from our town. This was the end of  my lessons in playing harmonium.

A few years later I moved to Canada and complained to my husband my mom was not in favor of me learning to play a musical instrument. He listened and suddenly I heard him talking to someone in St. John’s about a piano.

He bought the piano and it was delivered to us in a week. I looked for a teacher, there was one three or four doors from my house. I called her and asked her if she would be willing to teach me.

She agreed and I started learning to play the piano. Irma my piano teacher had two little kids, who were very friendly. I got along well with them. I was doing quite well, then the same thing happened, Irma’s husband was transferred to Yellow Knife. Once again I lost my teacher.

I was able to get another teacher, she taught music in the Catholic school. She lived close to my house, I was able to go to her once a week to continue the lessons. A few months later, she told me she was too busy in school and was unable to  continue with the piano lessons.

I was lucky to have a third teacher to continue with my lessons. I did have her for a while. She had to move out of the house she was living in ,which happened to be across the street from my house.

She told me the landlord was renting rooms to male and female students. She did not like the male students because in her words,”They were very untidy.”

After losing the third teacher, I was uninterested to find another teacher.

Now and then I play the piano, but  my feline occupants are terrified of the sound. We had felines before, they were never scared. All I can understand from this is may be female felines are fond of music and the males are not. 😦
