#Shaping Your Story, Week Three

#Shaping Your Story,   Week Three

In my week two #shaping your story, I wrote about Ramadan and the day after. It’s the day when fasting is over and Muslims all over the world celebrate by having a feast with friends and family.

I got an invitation to attend the dinner to celebrate Eid after a month of fasting. when the time for me came to get dressed and visit the friend’s house, a telephone call changed everything, our good friend of many years suddenly passed away. The invitation did not take place. It was time to visit his family to give them moral support.

I think the angle that illustrates my story is why my dinner invitation did not take place.

Daily Prompt: Overcome

In response to prompt : Overcome

Overcome with fatigue and hunger the traveller, stopped in a park, he saw a huge oak tree, felt it was the right place to stop. He sat under the tree to rest, it was comfortable, closed his eyes and before he knew it he fell asleep.

A sweet voice awakened him, he looked up, there she was a tiny girl, she asked,   ‘Why are you sleeping under the tree, don’t you have a home, come with me and stay in our home, I will call you my grandpa.’

Overwhelmed by emotion, the traveller looked at the little angel, he was speechless. Tears rolled down his cheeks.

The girl shook him,  ‘Oh don’t cry,’  she said,  ‘my mom and I will take good care of you, you stay with us and tell me stories, I love them, mom is always busy. I will call you my pretend grandpa.’

This invitation by the girl, touched his heart, he burst out crying. He said, ‘ your mom doesn’t know me, she may not like me to stay in your house.’

‘My mom will be happy to have you in our house, we’ll be a happy family,’   she said.

She suddenly ran to get her mom, who was sitting on a bench. At first mom wasn’t too sure to have a stranger living with them, when she  noticed her daughter’s sad face, she made up her mind to give it a try.

The girl and her mother took the traveller home. He was given a furnished bedroom. The little angel  loved to have her pretend grandpa as she called him. They enjoyed each others company, life was much better!

Daily prompt: Only Sixteen

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

Tell us about the person you were when you were sixteen. If you haven’t yet hit sixteen, tell us about the person you want to be at sixteen.

When I was sixteen, I was a first year student in a local co-ed. college. I had a few friends, one of them felt sorry for me, because she knew my sister-in -law before I knew her, she didn’t think too highly of her. As time passed I became aware what my new friend told me.

I wasn’t fond of the new addition in our family, but was afraid to express my opinion for I was scared of my eldest brother who was her husband.

I remember my brother was not nice anymore he believed his wife and she took full advantage of our insecurity. At some point I believed this torture will  come to an end. I will be free to lead my life independently and my brother won’t be able to threaten me.

I carried the feeling of dislike towards both and a few years later, refused an invitation to his house for dinner. He told me he bought prawns, my favorite shell fish, and his wife would cook it for me. I told him, “You eat your prawns I’m not interested.”

My sister thought I was cruel to refuse the invitation. I didn’t think so, the way he treated me and the younger siblings left a scar too deep to forgive him.

I know if Dad was alive I’d have a wonderful time, but too bad he wasn’t and I had a tough time at that young age.

Even though I stayed quiet, the love and respect I had for my brother vanished forever. My home circumstances taught me to mistrust everyone when I was sixteen. I know it’s a terrible thing , I cannot write an amazing story when I was sixteen, it would be a lie if I did.

365 Writing Prompts: What a Twist

Tell us a story fiction non fiction– with a twist we can’t see coming.

An old man knocked on the door of two innocent women,”let me in he said, I can tell what lies in the future for you both.”

They were mother and her daughter, the mother a pious woman always prayed and wished well for her children.

Hearing this the mother was delighted, she invited him to have supper with them. The man gleefully accepted the invitation.

Mother prepared the most scrumptious food for him. The man while eating praised her cooking skill, the woman was overjoyed and was hesitant to ask him about their future.

Meanwhile after supper he invited himself to spend the night in their house, he promised both mother and daughter he’d tell them in detail about their future.

He slept well and kept thanking his hosts how much he enjoyed the food and  rest at night.

He then asked for some time to put his thoughts together before he could give them the good news about their future. Morning turned into afternoon the man was still thinking over. The mother was tired and anxious, but had to wait, she knew she could not disturb the man.

Early evening there was a knock on the door, the daughter opened the door there were two policemen standing outside inquiring about some stranger who was taking advantage of innocent people, she froze when she heard this, could this be the man they’ve invited in their house.

The policemen asked permission to come in, the old man was still buried in his thoughts, suddenly he heard someone saying, “Alex what are you doing here, you’re supposed to look for the crook?”

Alex was stunned, he didn’t expect to be caught by his colleagues!

365 Writing Prompts: Smell you later

Humans have very strong scent memory. Tell us about a smell that transports you.

My mother was a very good cook, she was able to turn an ordinary vegetable   into a very tasty dish. When I came home on holidays from the university my mother would cook all my favorite foods, the smell before I went into the house made me hungry.

Whenever I go to a dinner invitation by a family from Bangladesh  I think of my mother, what a marvelous cook she was and she hardly cooked anything that was not yummy. Unconsciously I compare the hosts cooking with my mom’s, my mom’s cooking is better than theirs.

Each one of her dishes had an aroma which  drew families to our house, they appreciated it, and always wanted to know her method of cooking.

One of her famous food was pound cake, she did such a good job with it, no one not even the pastry shops were comparable.I guess I’m a bit partial.

DP Daily Prompt: Showdown At Big Sky

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

How do you handle conflict? Boldly and Directly? Or, do you prefer a more subtle approach?

I handled conflict very differently from any of the ones listed,I’d loved to write how I handled conflict, once upon a time.

This is all about my sister-in-law , she joined our family without invitation and was always ready to give us trouble and prove to my eldest brother we were evil.

One day my sis.-in-law prepared lunch as usual, she told the maid she was going to her neighbor’s and would be back before my other brother came home for lunch. She told the maid not to serve lunch until she came back.

My brother arrived home for lunch and  asked the maid to quickly bring lunch for him she said she couldn’t because she was told to wait  until Mrs.  was back. The clock was ticking my brother got very impatient I watched him pacing back and forth, and getting angrier every second. He had five minutes left to go back to work and the lady  of the house i.e our sis.-in-law did not come back.

My brother could not keep his temper in check anymore,he went into the kitchen, and started picking up the food pots and tossed them outside one after another until he was done. Then he left. I was horrified I did not know what to do,I thought my eldest brother would come home and get angry with me or even hit me.You might wonder why was I afraid because if anything bad happened my elders used to take it out on me.

I got dressed up quietly, called a rickshaw and went to our Grandpa’s house. I was safe, Grandpa looked at me and smiled,” what did your sister-in-law do this time?” I didn’t stop shaking, he felt bad for me, he said,”next time come to my house don’t go to your brother’s place”.

This is how I handled that conflict.

Writing Prompt: The Bizzaro World

In the DC comics Universe, a planet called “HTRAE(Earth Spelled backwards) is populated with bizarre versions of super heroes. A Seinfeld episode made the idea of this Bizarro World popular, where the characters encountered their opposite selves. Craft a scene in which you meet an opposite version of yourself –or a story in a bizarre , backwards world.

“A Bizarre Backwards World”

My friend invited me to visit an island, which according to her was,  “A Bizarre Backwords World”. I readily accepted her invitation, I thought I was already living in one,  how much more bizarre can this island be.

“You don’t understand here everything is backwards, it is a backwards world.” Her explanation baffled me, so I thought let’s see what I can find out.

My first encounter was with a man driving his car he was driving it backwards. I was horrified and was wondering how many pedestrians he might have killed while driving. Strangely enough Monica told me none. “How could this be possible” I asked,

“They walk backwards”. she said.

This knowledge made me dizzy. I wanted to go on a boat to see the island.I knew they couldn’t row the boat backwards. Our eyes are in the front,I thought how will I see what’s there if we go backwards. There was a trick my friend explained. Stupid me I was at a loss for words. I gave up the idea of a boat ride and made up my mind to leave as soon as possible.

Monica insisted I should accompany her to a restaurant, she was hungry and she felt I should be too. We went to one nearby,I couldn’t decipher the name. “Read Backwards Monica quipped”.

“Why did you bring me here I said?”

“Watch when I read it she said” ESUOH KAETS SSIWS  this is how you read it, “House Steak Swiss” Read it backward,it’s ,Swiss Steak House.

No Monica I said,Let’s go back and leave this backwards world behind!
