Tell us the last time you were really truly jealous of someone.Did you act on it ?Did it hurt your relationship?

I grew up in a large family, we the siblings always enjoyed each other’s company. We never had any bad blood amongst us. Our parents treated us the same. There was no favoritism, my Dad gave a little more attention to our youngest brother, so did my mom. We didn’t think anything of it. To us he is the youngest so it’s normal to get attention from the parents.

When I was in college there was a classmate of mine, for some reason she was extremely jealous of me. I found out from my friends, she wanted to do better than me in every exam, but failed to do so. I did not have any bad relationship with her because of it. I avoided confrontation.

I had a good friend in the university. She was from a very wealthy family, it made no difference to me, we were friends, money never came between our relationship.

My mom taught us not to be jealous of each other or anyone else. We grew up quite normal. We were happy, we made fun of each other when we played board games. We had no ill-feelings.

I cannot remember being jealous at any time of my life. I know for a fact jealousy destroys ones personality. I do not think it is worth it.

I cannot recall any kind of jealousy I had with anyone outside my family. Inside my family there has been instances, when I rebelled.I thought it was unfair. I cannot be sure if it is jealousy or partiality.Maybe an outsider will view it as border-line jealousy.

One year my father told my mother to buy new clothes only for my big sister for the second eid.All the others will have to wear clothes that we got for our first eid. I told my mother it is not fair. Why will she be treated differently, she should also wear the same clothes. Otherwise she has to buy new clothes for me too. My Mom knew she has to give in to my demand,or the situation might go out of hand.

I felt terrible for my other siblings, but the rule was made by my parents and I have to fight against it. I got my new clothes, the rest of my siblings didn’t dare fuss. At the time I didn’t know the phrase:”Squeaky wheel Gets The Grease”.

What do you think, will you call this act of mine ,”JEALOUSY”?  It is your call.

Please Note: Eid is a celebration we have, twice a year. One is after the month of Ramadan,we call it Eid-al -Fitr, the second one comes after two months and ten days after the first one,it is Eid-uz- Zuha. In the second one an animal is slaughtered  e.g cow, camel, goat, these are the common ones.

The title of this poem is ‘Question’

O God,you sent messengers so many times

in this cruel world___

they said,’forgive all,  ‘said give love___

remove all bad thoughts from your heart’.

they are  respected, they are remembered, still outside

in these bad times their efforts failed.

I saw secret jealousy in the insincere darkness

how it hit the helpless people.

I saw ____no justice against the criminals

the verdict went against the innocent and made them cry quietly.

I saw young boys running to save their lives

what a painful death they suffered.

My voice is silent today, my flute has lost its melody.

In this dark fortnight who has

destroyed my world that seems like a nightmare.

This is why I ask you with tearful eyes____

P question

those who have poisoned your air, turned off your lights,

did you forgive them,  did you love them?
