Daily Prompt : Spicy

In response to the prompt : Spicy

When it comes to food, I like it  spicy. One day, my husband and I with our two good friends decided to have Sheesh Kebab for dinner, my husband bought beef and cleaned and sliced the piece of meat into small thin slices. Our daughter was a year old. I cooked a mild flavored chicken dish for her.

Our aim was to make the beef sheesh kebab spicy. I was in charge I used a good amount of cayenne, a quarter teaspoon of cloves, some cinnamon to enhance the flavor, fresh ginger and garlic paste. We marinated the beef mixture for about two hours.

We lived in an apartment in Montreal, we didn’t barbecue in the kitchen, to avoid the aroma in our bedroom, and living room.

The only proper place to barbecue was the balcony. I had the beef ready, my husband grilled it, we brought the kebabs in the dining room and I set the table.

I put my daughter in her high chair, and served her chicken with some rice, she noticed we were eating something different, she made a fuss, she wanted to eat the kebab, not the chicken. I said, ‘Selina the kebab is hot, you cannot eat it.’

She refused to listen and stretched her little hand for the meat. I thought she’d stop eating once she tastes it, she continued eating and  pulled  her tongue, because it was so hot. I tried to convince her the chicken is better, but  she refused to eat it..

I had to surrender  and prayed she won’t get sick.  We had a wonderful time eating the sheesh kebab. It worried me because my little kid wanted to eat the kebabs that were too hot for her!

DP Daily Prompt: Ingredients

The one ingredient I cannot do without in my kitchen is cayenne. I think it makes the food taste better. You can use a small amount or large. It’s all about how much is comfortable to consume without getting a stomach ache.

When I make sheesh kebab I use a little more than usual, such as from half teaspoon to one and a half.  It might be too much for some people. I think the dish is not tasty if I only put half a teaspoon.

This reminds me of an incidence with my next door neighbor. We invited them for supper, our menu was sheesh kebab, chicken, salad and pilaf.

We decided we’d make sheesh kebab we like i.e., hot and spicy. We didn’t want our neighbors to go hungry,we also cooked chicken as a substitute, we baked fried chicken, especially for their daughter but also for them if they were unable to handle our spicy sheesh kebab.

We were totally blown away when they ate the spicy dish and ignored the plain fried chicken. from that day on they barbecued the kebab quite frequently. We were pleased!

NaBloPoMo “My Mom’s famous Kebab” Ranu’s post https://sabethville.wordpress.com

My Mom was a very good cook. Anything she cooked was amazing. We all loved to eat. We seldom asked  how she turned out these delicious meals. I watched  when she cooked.  It looked so easy. I thought I can do this too. The ingredients she used were, slices of beef ,same size potatoes, onions were sliced thin, the tomatoes were thin slices too. In addition she used whole dry peppers, peppercorn and cinnamon sticks, there were whole cloves, salt, yoghurt and oil or clarified butter.

She used a round pot for this amazing dish. She had the ingredients in separate bowls. The layering of these ingredients was carefully done. she put a tablespoon of oil or clarified butter in the pot and spread it evenly. She carefully laid the beef ,followed  by three or four dry red peppers, a few peppercorns, some cloves, salt, and one or two half inch cinnamon sticks. Then  potatoes were layered on top making sure they covered the meat, onions went on top and tomatoes on the top layer. On each layer the oil and the yoghurt mixed with ground ginger, garlic ground cumin and ground coriander was spread as well. If she had some ingredients left, she’d repeat the layering. When everything was neatly in the pot, she put the cover on.

It was put on a charcoal stove, to give it the effect of an oven, she put hot charcoal on the cover. It took about an hour. When the lid was taken off,the aroma made us rush to the dining room. We didn’t need any bells!
