365 Writing Prompts: Moment of Kindness

Describe a moment of kindness, between you and someone else–loved one or complete stranger.

My friend Asha was interested to learn how to make our famous dessert of Bangladesh. It is called in Bengali, “Rasho Golla”, the English translation is Cheese balls in Syrup.

She lived close to my house, she told me before she cannot figure out recipes, if I’d be willing to go to her house and show her exactly how it’s made.

I asked her to get the ingredients I needed, she bought them and called me. I went to her house showed her how to make them from beginning to end.She was pleased. Her husband came into the kitchen with “Dopey Eyes”, looked at the dessert and said to me , ” you have used so much sugar to make this?”

Well my kindness was unrewarded!

365 Writing Prompts: A bend in time

When you’re giddy with excitement, does time speed up ? Slow down? Tell us about the experience of anticipation.

I had those moments of anticipation more often than I’d care to admit. They were not exactly excitement but were too stressful for me .

I had finished my school final exam. and had to wait a while for the results.I was not waiting for an outstanding result, how could I, I barely spent enough time  studying as others. I was hoping to pass the exam, I knew if I didn’t there was going to be trouble, my brother had already threatened to marry me off to some farmer or anyone of his kind, if I failed.

At fifteen things were looking dismal, and because my father passed away my elder brother was the head of the family, failure would mean I’d be at the mercy of my brother.

The day of the result arrived, our roll numbers would be out in the morning news paper i.e. of those who passed. I didn’t forget to say my morning prayer that day, I knew if I asked God to help me, He would.

The moment I heard the bicycle bell of the delivery man my heart beat faster, “please God I said let me cross this hurdle, I will study hard if I passed.”

The results were out on the front page my younger brother was jumping with joy, I’m not sure what he was thinking I was terrified, I opened the newspaper, the first page was filled with roll numbers of candidates who passed in the first division, I went on to the second page, after going through a whole bunch of numbers, I saw mine, tears rolled down my cheeks as I said,”Mom I passed.”

Did not look right!

What is wrong My dear

Said my Mother,”Is everything

All right, please tell Me!”

I’ve told you many times

have only a one track Mind

You prefer to trust Minu

More than Me

DP Daily Prompt: Moments to Remember

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

What are three most memorable moments….good or bad, happy or sad…in your life?Go

I had more than three memorable moments, the three that I consider happy are: 1. the birth of my first daughter, I remember running to see her in her cot, every time she cried. My husband took pictures of her whenever he saw her in a different pose. She didn’t know what we were doing, but looking at the pictures gave me so much joy.  I bought any cute dress I saw, she wasn’t too thrilled to be changed each time we bought a  new dress. I liked to dress her up for my pleasure.

The second moment of happiness was when I was awarded the scholarship to go to London, it was one dream I wanted to come true and it did.

Third one was  one that I never thought of for a long time, but I only knew two lines of Iqbal’s poetry and wanted to learn about him more, the opportunity came unexpectedly  I was very thankful and will continue to do so.

Sad was watching my father dying and I didn’t know it was permanent.

Second, when our cat JD died.

Third when we had to sell our beautiful house, because we were leaving that town.

There are many others happy and sad moments, these were the ones I wanted to share.

DP Daily Prompt: The Normal Post by Ranu

I checked the dictionary,to find out what is their definition of “Normal”, well surprise, surprise,it says physically or mentally sound. What it means to me,I do not think I’m quite sure.A good thing or a bad thing, depends on who the judge is.

Let me think about physically sound first. It is not easy to know about physical fitness. I maybe fit today, tomorrow I’d find out just the opposite. I heard about a young man, sound bodily, suddenly collapses and lands in the ‘ICU’. So one cannot decide by looking at a person,he/she is sound physically. There have been cases when patients have been sent home with a clean bill of health. Moments later the person is back on the stretcher wheeled hastily to ‘OR’,this is about physical health.

Next is mental health,it is much more complex than the one I just wrote about. We hear about serial killers, outwardly the neighbors see nothing wrong,he is as normal as anyone else. Delve further you find ,he/she is responsible for countless murders. How can it be, he was photographed with the Reagans. There is something wrong with this news.No there isn’t, we overlooked it.

My conclusion is, the word,’Normal’ is not easy to write about. So I leave it to the readers to decide,if they can distinguish between normal and abnormal.I certainly cannot.
