Daily Prompts: Trick Questions

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

A pulitzer- prize winning reporter is writing an in-depth piece about you. What are the three questions you really hope she doesn’t ask you?

The three questions I do not want H/S to ask me are:

  1. How much money I make. He/she should not ask this question because it’s personal.
  2. What kind of dwelling I have. Where I live is not a relevant question.
  3. I do not want H/S to ask me anything about Politics.
  4. The above are my questions.
  5. ………………………………….:)

Writing 101:Play with word count, Day 12

Writing assignment : true 100-word story.

Her name was Darlene, she was a nine-year old girl in my grade four class. One  Friday afternoon, she came to me excited, “look Miss,I’ve taken out two cookbooks from the library.”

“What will you do with them?” I asked.

“I will cook breakfast for my  family!” She smiled.

On Monday, two boys in my class, came running to give me the news.

“Miss,” both said, in one breath, “Darlene is dead!”

I looked at them in awe, “No it’s not true.” I exclaimed!

“Yes Miss,” both yelled, “her next door neighbor killed her for money!”

DP Daily Prompt: April 2nd 2015

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

Sometimes it’s necessary to ignore weird looking people. They are never short of tricks in their repertoire. I made the mistake of paying attention to a bystander. He was a tall man, neither overweight nor skinny. It seemed the whole neighborhood was paying a lot of attention to him, I joined in to know why he got so much attention .

My neighbor V and A smiled and told me to listen. With those two in the crowd I felt safe. I noticed his voice was low it was not audible enough for me, I moved closer to hear what he was saying, finally it was clear what he wanted us to do.

Apparently there was a poor young woman in the next street selling some valuable jewellery at a very low price. We all must visit her and at least buy one thing from her, she needs the money. I was curious to see what she was selling, I decided I must go before someone else buys  the better jewels.

I went to her house, pressed the door bell, no sound, did I come to the wrong place I thought, I checked the number, it was the right one. I heard a loud bark, out came this scary German Sheppard, I was terrified but stayed, I expected some human to show up, no luck . I rang the door bell again this time I could see an old man coming murmuring something under his breath.

I wanted him to come out, he did after a few seconds, with his most extraordinary voice he said, “Yes what can I do for you?”

I thought it was a strange question since I was told some young woman needed money, she was selling her jewellery. I hesitatingly said ,”the jewellery I came to buy some.”

He gave me a puzzled look, “is this what they told you and  roared into an unstoppable laughter?”

I stood there stunned why did they trick me like that I wondered. I saw V and A laughing, A came and said, “Did you forget this is April 1st ?”

I was so embarrassed I quickly ran home!

DP Daily Prompt: Someone Else’s Island

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

We’ve all been asked what five objects we’d take with us to a desert island. Now it’s your best friend’s ( or close relative’s) turn to be stranded. What five objects would you send him/her off with?

I am thinking of so many things to send with my best friend, but I’m allowed only five items. I need to think of the items she cannot do without.

I thought of a rice cooker, it wont be feasible, how will she plug it on in a desert, I know there will be no electricity, I wonder if there are battery operated rice cookers or better yet will the sand get warm enough to cook the rice? My friend cannot live without rice.

Rice cooker is out, I cannot send her with rice either, what’s the alternative she needs to eat something to live. I think a box of rice cereal is awesome, it’s as close to plain rice as one can get. Milk is not a problem I’ll give her a package of milk powder for her cereal. There is plenty of water in an island, she can mix the milk powder with water and voila she’s got milk for her cereal.

Let me see she’d need a bowl for her cereal, she can use it for any other food such as berries if she is lucky enough to find some.

It will be useless to give her money where will she spend it on a desert island?

She’ll need a set of clothes and a towel. I’ve already got the five items that I’ll send with her, let’s see they are:

1. one box of cereal

2. milk powder–one package

3.bowl—one

4.set of clothes — one

5. towel– one

I am checking the list, I am horrified to see the things I’m sending with my friend to a desert island. But they are very important, food and clothing everyone needs it.

Wait a minute if she knowingly goes to a desert island as a precautionary measure wouldn’t she herself take things she needs, when we go somewhere we take things with us we might need if we stay longer and run out of medicine, extra money for food and even more clothes?

DP Daily Prompt:Work? Optional!

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

If money were out of the equation, would you still work? If yes, why, and how much? If not, what would you do with your free time?

If money were  out of the equation, I will not work.

There is so much one can do other than a 9 to 5 job. We may think we have a lot of free time, actually we don’t. When we work for money, almost all of our time we spend working, when we are unable to get it done in the office we bring it home. As a result we completely neglect, the house in which we live.

In my free time, I  can  work in the garden, the hedge I planted few years ago hasn’t grown the way it should, the winter was very harsh, I was unable to cover it before the arrival of winter.

There is also plenty of work inside the house, which I can do.

I’m enjoying blogging, I can use my free time to write short stories, biographies of my favorite poets and philosophers. I think I would love to use my free time to read some of the books,  I have not read yet.

Writing Prompt: Art Appreciation

Do you need to agree with an artist’s lifestyle or politics to appreciate their Art? To spend money on it?

If I appreciated an artist’s work based on his/her lifestyle or politics it will not say much about my appreciation. If we did that with anyone, the world would be a very difficult place to live in.

Art appreciation should be based on the talent or the gift of the artist,it should have nothing to with his political affiliation, think about all the well-known artist,do we say oh let’s find out what kind of a lifestyle he had then we’ll decide whether his work is worthy to be bought.

I will spend money on an art work I like, the life style or politics will make no difference.

DP Daily Prompt: If I Could Turn Back Time

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

If you could return to the past to relive a part of your life , either to experience the wonderful bits again, or to do something over, which part of your life would you return to? Why?

If there was a way to return to my past where my father was alive and we were a one big happy family I’d do it in a heartbeat. Why? That was the time when everything was wonderful in my life, except my big sister she was the only one  who was the biggest thorn in my life. I’ll forget about her presence in my happy story.

I remember playing with my two older brothers, we played with marbles, they taught me how to strike the marbles in front of me, each time I succeeded I could win the marble I struck. My fingers were not as strong as them, I played in a weird way, they complained but let me have the marble.

They also coaxed me to give them the money I had from selling my old books, they wanted to go and watch a movie, they had to plead a few times I eventually gave my money, I found pleasure in knowing they wanted  something from me.

Sometimes my eldest brother wanted to borrow money from me, I always had a little bit of money, I couldn’t spend it because my father was not in favor of spending it to buy junk food. So I’d lend the money to my brother and told him he’d have to pay double the amount, once he said I was worse than the Kabuliwalla, these were money lenders who were mean and would come around to collect after a certain date and would stay put until they were paid. I wasn’t that bad.

Next I’d spend a lot of time sitting beside my father in the garden and asked him a lot of questions, while my father kept busy with his newspaper my eldest brother would tease me with the saying,”You know Ranu curiosity killed a cat.” Now I wish I had asked how did the cat get killed?

Once my father’s friend gave me a ride to school,I was very shy then, I got off the car and said, “thank you” so softly my father couldn’t hear, he was disappointed because he thought I didn’t thank his friend. I told him I did it didn’t seem he believed me.

I really would like to revisit those times, I felt they were the best times I had in my life!

DP Daily Prompt: What a Twist fiction Post by Ranu

Dressed in clothes that made him look like a saint,he knocked the door gently. The woman opened the door and saw an old man with rosary beads,he was repeating some Arabic prayer. The woman promptly let him in.She asked him what she could do for him. He was a religious man and seemed not aware what she asked him.She repeated again, finally he opened his eyes and replied, “I am tired, can I rest for a while and complete my prayer?” She was more than glad to oblige. He continued  to pray.

He introduced himself  as a Sufi coming from a country far away. He said he was instructed to come to her place by some Divine power. The woman called her daughter. The daughter felt flattered that they were the family picked by this saint. They quickly sent the servant to buy groceries. There were a lot of dishes cooked by the woman and her daughter. He was treated royally.

The mother and daughter were elated that they were the chosen one. Meanwhile the stranger showed them a corner of the room. He said it was where they will find treasure hidden long time ago. They must clean that corner and wait for further instruction by him, how they should retrieve it. The house was bought by the family a few years ago, they never heard anything about it,only it belonged to a Hindu family. They decided to move to Kolkata,so they were selling the house.

The saint found himself  amidst two individuals, who were ready to do anything he wanted. After staying for a couple of hours,he declared it was time for him to go.He reminded them to continue praying. The mother and daughter asked him if he wanted some money,he did not show any interest. The mother did not feel comfortable, she begged him to take the money and pray for her family.Reluctantly he agreed. Before leaving he told them he’d be visiting some holy places,he would pray for them and get some sweets for them.

Thinking it would require some money and the man was too nice to ask, the mother emptied her suitcase and gave him the money and continued to ask him to pray for her family. The man nodded gently and assured them he’d see them again soon.

With his bag full of money the stranger left, he went to a nearby town ,checked into a hotel. He was pleased to see his bag bursting in the seams with money he collected . All he had to do was disguise as a saint!
