The Inconceivable Woman

She was nineteen years old but the kind of determination she had ,would put adults to shame . She was the daughter of a carpenter but she had high hopes for herself .She once told her aunt she wanted to be the best  physician   in the country.

Her aunt jokingly said, ” It’s a long process you have to get an undergraduate degree, then do well in MCAT, only then you can apply to get in to medical school. It’s a long way, I think you should think of completing your degree and get admission in B.Ed. and go for the teaching position, it’s much quicker and less expensive.”

Nerissa was furious, she didn’t like the negative attitude of her aunt. From that day she spoke as little as possible and concentrated on her studies.

First year in college was a bit tough , she overcame her difficulties quickly. It seemed it was yesterday she talked about her ambition to be a  physician, now  she graduated with honors, time passes so fast.

But destiny has a way of turning around , Nerissa was rejected in her application to medical school, once, twice, three times .

Her belief in herself changed she began to think maybe what aunt Alice saw was right, it was a long road to get where she wanted to go. Already rejected three times, her dream of becoming a physician was shattered, she lost faith in herself. She spent a large amount of her time thinking what’s next. She could not get an answer.

Her mom was concerned, she could not grasp why this was happening to her only child. She was  at a loss how could she make her daughter happy was the only thing she thought of. Right at that moment she heard the phone ringing, she picked up the receiver, it was Monica, Nerissa’s childhood friend .

Monica wanted to come over to see Nerissa and her parents. Mrs. Raymond was delighted, it was so sudden and the right moment to cheer up her daughter.

Monica came for dinner, Mr.s Raymond cooked Nerissa’s favorite dishes. Nerissa’s parents and Monica enjoyed the dinner. For dessert Mrs.Raymond baked chocolate cheesecake. This was a favorite of the whole family. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond decided to go  for a walk after dinner, while the two girls volunteered to clear the table and wash the dishes.

While washing the dishes Nerissa told her friend, she was rejected three times in her application to medical school, she lost her confidence, she had no idea whether she could get a job with her Biology degree.

“I have an idea”, said Monica, “meet me at the gym tomorrow!”

The Inconceivable Woman–Part-two

Early  next morning, Nerissa got dressed to meet her friend and made up her mind to sign up at the gym, if nothing she could at least try to get in shape. It was  her way to direct her energy towards something that would help her to be healthy. She had wasted too much time and effort to get into medical school, it hasn’t happened, chances were good it never will.

She signed the necessary papers and after a long time felt good about her decision. While handing her form to the secretary, she heard someone, it sounded familiar, she turned around, found her friend David smiling,”Hi Ness, what are you doing here, don’t tell me you’ve decided to join the gym.”

“What if I have, what’s that to you, can I remind you my name is “Nerissa” and not Ness?”

“It’s easier for me, you know those three letters, R I A , I dislike them .”

“But why what’s wrong with those letters?”

“You really want to know?”

“Yes!”

“When I was in kindergarten, I got into a fight with Peter, he called me names so I punched him.”

The  teacher was furious, in a fit of anger she forgot my name and called me Red because of my hair. I cried and said, “My name is David not Red.”

The kids were delighted, they’ve found something to tease me, from that day on every single boy and girl called me Red.

“Okay why do you dislike I and A, is there a story behind them too?”

“Oh yes, I was a terrible speller, I barely passed the spelling tests, ‘I’ this one was strange, the teacher told us i should always be in capital letter when you mean yourself,e.g  I am, I think I wasn’t listening so when the teacher wanted me to write what she said, “I wrote, i em.” the teacher then wrote the two letters “I” and “A” on a piece of cardboard and pinned it on my back. I was so embarrassed I swore I’ll never use these letters again. Your name has those two distasteful letters I had to eliminate them.”

“It’s a weird story but interesting Red.”

“Not funny David said, let’s go for coffee.”

“I can’t, I’m waiting for Monica, I wonder why she’s not here yet!”

365 Writing Prompts: History of Language

Write a piece of fiction describing the incident that gave rise to the phrase, “third time’s the charm.”

Monica had a beautiful garden, she had flowers, apples, strawberries growing in her garden, but she could not grow raspberries.

Monica thought may be the soil was not good enough, she changed it, no luck, she asked her friend, but did not get a satisfactory answer.

She was not ready to give up just yet she changed the spot and did everything to get raspberries growing in her garden, it did not help, she was ready to give up trying .

She decided one more time, this time she got in touch with a horticulturist, she explained what her problem was, he understood the problem she was going through, his reply was, “Did you try to change the seeds?”

Suddenly Monica realized she hadn’t done that, she got fresh seeds from the nursery, within a short time she saw signs of raspberries.

Well she thought , “third time’s the  charm.”

Fiction: The Porcelain Doll

Lillie McFerrin Writes

Monica wanted a porcelain doll as her birthday present, the parents gladly bought one and reminded her to follow the instruction, “How to take care of her prized possession.”

She dressed her doll the best way she could, she was happy to see how gorgeous her doll looked, she named it, “Nefertiti”, the Egyptian queen.

Her friend Patricia heard about Monica’s doll and came to see if it was as pretty as her classmates told her, to her surprise she didn’t think she’d seen a doll prettier than Monica’s, her friend’s reluctance to let her touch the doll infuriated Patricia, she made plans to steal it and bury it in the ground.

After her friend left that day,Monica remembered seeing something in Patricia’s looks which made her concerned, was her friend thinking of something evil was all she thought about the whole day, she fell asleep early evening, suddenly she woke up in the middle of the night and found her doll missing, she looked out the window and found Patricia digging a hole in the ground, slowly the doll was laid in the hole and the ground was covered up,Monica let out a horrific scream, she started crying and yelling, “How could you do this to me?”

The noise awakened the parents, mom and dad came running to see what was going on, they found Monica crying and yelling, “She buried my doll,” the parents rummaged the room frantically, they found it neatly tucked away in the doll- house!

DP Daily Prompt: Going Obsolete

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

Of all the technologies that have gone extinct in your lifetime, which one do you miss the most?

The one I miss the most is the VCR. I loved the idea of taping some of the programs we used to watch, and if we liked it we’d turn on the VCR and watch it again,it was fun.

My favorite was watching the grand slam french open tennis tournament, Monica Seles was my favorite, I was ecstatic when she beat Steffi Graf. I watched the championship several times. Now the VCR  doesn’t exist but matches are still played, things are different the players have changed and I watch sometimes but that enthusiasm has dwindled.

Book Review Post by Ranu

Diana, Princess of Wales: Tribute

Diana, Princess of Wales: Tribute (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

“Untold Story” is a novel by Monica Ali.It was published by Scribner,A division of Simon & Schuster,Inc.The date of publication is June 2011.It’s a hardcover edition.

2011 was the year when Princess Diana would turn fifty, had she lived. The author has imagined a different fate for Diana in her new novel,’Untold Story’. I think the sole purpose of the author is to tell about the the life she lived as a princess . Had she lived what it would be like. Whenever an author chooses to write about a celebrity he/she puts before the reader the price the celebrities pay for fame.

This is the story of Lydia, a princess in disguise. She moves to a small community. No one knows her here. She makes a few friends. To make herself useful she takes a job at a Kensington Canine Sanctuary. The disguise doesn’t help her that much. She is spotted by Grabowski, a paparazzi who knew her when she was a princess. He photographs her whenever he can,to make a bundle of cash. She realizes she is not safe and contemplates on leaving this sanctuary.

In my opinion the author is telling her readers that a celebrity,he or she cannot live an ordinary life. There will always be people who can find find them. The author introduces Diana as an unfortunate person whose life and marriage were both fairy tale and nightmare rolled into one. She was adored by millions, she suffered rejection and betrayal by the people she thought were her own. The author says if she had lived, would she have found happiness or the curse of fame would be too great.

The author tries to tell her readers that Diana  would not be able to live a normal life.

I liked the book.It is well organized.I think this book can be read by any adult or even teenagers. The language is clear and simple. The readers will enjoy it more if they know the background of the main character in the story.
