Writing 101, Day Fifteen

Write today’s post on ideas from your list. If you don’t have any ideas to choose from , not to worry. Here are four passages you can choose from to get you going.

I’d like to use the following passage:

“Without music, life would be a mistake.”

I love music always did from my childhood. I used to sit in a corner of our house, which was always vacant, it gave me an opportunity to sing songs I learned in school.

Once I went with my older sister to her colleagues house. She didn’t know how to entertain a quiet teenager like me . She quickly got her record player and Played a song by Tagore. I fell in love with that song and listened to it thirteen times. After the thirteenth time I did not ask to continue listening, I thought she might feel I am weird.

I loved the lyrics of the song, Tagore was a magician when it came to writing lyrics. Since it is in Bengali my mother tongue. I will translate it into English.

Here is the song I copied from YouTube:

Translated by Ranu.

The title of this song is “Forever Me” or “Chiro Aami” (Bengali)

There will come a time when my footsteps will not be visible in this market,

You will not see me rowing my boat,

before this happens, I will take care of my buying and selling and will pay my dues.

You will not see me visiting this market__

You do not have to think of me, or remember me,

Do not look up at the stars and call me.

You will feel my absence when you look at my things.

My musical instrument will be covered with dust,

Thorny creepers will grow around my house,

The garden will show signs of neglect as I would not be there

to take care of the grass,

Moss and lichen will surround the pond__

I do not expect you to remember me at that time or call me.

Everything will be the same, the flute will sound the same,

Days will go on the same as today,

The wharves will be filled with boats,

The shepherds will look after the cattle and play,

The cattle will graze, life will go on as usual.

Do not remember me or call me then.

Then one bright morning who can say I won’t be there?

Of course I will, I will have a new name and new friends,

I will take part in the games as before only I will have a new identity.

I will go on forever!

Do you play an instrument? Is there a musical instrument whose sound you find particularly pleasing? Tell us a story about your experience or relationship with an instrument of your choice.

I love a few musical instruments, I wanted to learn to play  harmonium, when I was thirteen, my mom thought it was a bad idea, she was afraid I’d neglect my studies. Later on I did learn to play it, I wasn’t able to continue due to lack of time and pressure of studies.

My husband bought a piano for me to satisfy my desire to learn to play it. This time there was a lot of things I was involved with, I could not concentrate on learning to play it. I did continue off and on, now I find I spend more time writing and reading, and  I do not take time to practice the piano.

I love the sound of violin, I have watched this instrument played by various actors  in several movies. There is not much of a story to tell, except I love the way it sounds.

I probably wrote more about Tagore’s work than anything else. The task is,how can I weave all this in a book quote, film quote, or song lyric that’s hovering all around me,is something I never gave any thought. I know I’d have to pick one from the aforementioned topics.I wonder which one will be smooth sailing.

There is a song of Tagore,I heard it when I was in my teens. This song and its lyrics reverberates in my mind.It seems to be stuck. It wants to make a permanent house in my ears. The lyrics are very meaningful.

In the song Tagore talks about his death. He views everything to remain normal, except he will not be part of it. He knows his fans will miss him. He tells them not to remember him or try to call him.

I will embed the video of the song and translate it.

Forever Me by Tagore      Translation by Ranu

When my footprints,

are no longer visible on this path,

I will not row my boat here.

I’d be finished buying and selling

and I’d have paid my dues.

I will no longer visit this market.

You need not remember me or call me.

When my musical instrument is

covered with dust

the prickly thorns are surrounding

the doors of my house,

the flower garden  is taken

over by tall grass,

giving the look of a

place deserted,

the moss crowding the lake.

At that time you need not think of me or call me.

The flute will sound the same as now.

The days will pass as it does now.

The river banks will be full of boats,

the shepherds will tend their cattle as usual,

the cattle will graze in the field

and the shepherds will play.

When that day comes,

you need not remember me or call me.

When my footprints are no longer,

visible on this path,

who can be sure,

I’m not there.

I will participate in all games,

I will have new friends,

I will have a new name,

I will come and go forever!

When my footprints are no longer

visible on this path.

Do not call me or think of me!
