Writing 101:Play with word count, Day 12

Writing assignment : true 100-word story.

Her name was Darlene, she was a nine-year old girl in my grade four class. One  Friday afternoon, she came to me excited, “look Miss,I’ve taken out two cookbooks from the library.”

“What will you do with them?” I asked.

“I will cook breakfast for my  family!” She smiled.

On Monday, two boys in my class, came running to give me the news.

“Miss,” both said, in one breath, “Darlene is dead!”

I looked at them in awe, “No it’s not true.” I exclaimed!

“Yes Miss,” both yelled, “her next door neighbor killed her for money!”

Daily Prompt: Middle Seat

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

It turns out your neighbor on the plane/bus/train(or the person sitting at the next table at the coffee shop)is a very chatty tourist.Do you try to switch seats, go for a non-committal brief small talk, or make this person your new best friend?

Only recently I was traveling to Montreal with my daughter, my seat was in the middle, my daughter took the aisle seat, the occupant of the window seat hadn’t arrived yet. I was hoping it would stay vacant, squeezing herself in the aisle was the occupant, there was hardly any room for me to stand to let her in. I could only apologize and say, ” I’m Sorry, there is no room for me  to stand, can you hop on over?”

She seemed a delightful person, she replied, “yes I can.”

I thought she will say something, from the time she sat down which was two and a half hours, till the time the plane landed, she stayed quiet. Occasionally I saw her taking pictures of what she could see outside, which didn’t seem much.

I didn’t have to change my seat, I was happy I didn’t have to, the airline charges $30.00 dollars if the passengers want to change seats. I know because we had to pay that amount  they put us far away from each other, even though we bought the tickets at the same time, not separately, my daughter bought both the tickets.

DP : Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda…

Tell us about something you should do….. but don’t.

There are many things  I should do..but don’t. I got the idea from Michele of WordPress. One of the most important ideas from “Blogging 101” is be a good neighbor, I feel terrible to admit I haven’t done that at all until we got the assignment.

I met some awesome neighbors, Mireille’s health journey, ‘Along the side of the road’ I met   Marianne and her post post S.M.A.R.T.

‘Urge to wander’ is Madhu’s blog, she wrote a post in memory of her friend, Christine she passed away a year ago.

Now I get the post from  these great neighbors whom I didn’t know before, now that I am lucky to find them, I enjoy reading their posts a lot.

This morning Mireille had a guest post, her guest posted an awesome recipe with apricot. I loved it so much I reblogged it, I know my friends will love the recipe.

I think I will say hello to more neighbors, it will be helpful and I also want to be a good neighbor.

365 writing prompt: Evasive action

What’s the most significant secret you’ve ever kept? Did the truth ever come out?

As far as I know, I do not keep secrets, and there was no incidence of me keeping a secret significant or otherwise. Therefore the possibility of coming out does not exist.

My husband always told me I must never give my recipes to anyone, that way they can only taste my food when they visit me.

I remember one of my neighbors from India wanted my recipe for a very famous dessert we have in Bangladesh. I went to her house prepared the dessert for her while she was watching. She could not make it the way I did, this is what she told me.

I know for a fact it does not matter if I give my so called secret recipes, they are unable to duplicate it , this is true with everyone not just me. There is some kind of magic in our hands we all have, even with the same recipe, ingredients and what have you, it does not taste the same.

The question is, does theirs taste better? No, it doesn’t even taste the same. This is what they tell me.

DP Daily Prompt: Circle of Five

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

A writer once said, “you are the average of five people you spend the most time with.”  If this is true, which five people would you like to spend your time with?

The five people I’d like to spend time with are my best friends Mini and Dilruba  , my colleague Atiya, my daughter Selina, and  my neighbor Agnes.

All of them are known to me for several years, of course I know my daughter since she was born.

Mini my best friend was my classmate in my post graduate class, we became very good friends while in school, we kept it up to this day.

I met Dilruba when I moved to North America, I visit her  when I go to Montreal, we love each others company. Our conversation begins with food and ends with diet.

Atiya was my colleague when I first started teaching in Residential Model school. She is a very kind person.

Selina and I have a good time discussing various foods and which one is good for us and also the ones we should watch.

Agnes was a very dear neighbor when I lived in her town. We were next door neighbors, Agnes liked baking cookies, I was always on her list when she distributed them. She is an excellent cook and  a very friendly person.

The above are the five people I’d love to spend time with, all of them are very good to me, I always enjoy their company.

365 Writing Prompts: Comedy of errors

Murphy’s law says, “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.” Write about a time everything did—fiction encouraged here, too!

The other day I went to take care of some important work that could not wait. I went out, the weather was extremely cold, I was dressed as warm as I could, it felt I should have worn more layers than I did.

When I was walking down my driveway, I saw my neighbor, I called her a few times, finally when she looked up I asked how she was. She seemed not too happy but I thought I was being a good neighbor. She reminded me to hurry along to catch the bus. I knew there still was time and I won’t miss the bus, as my neighbor was busy I left her alone and went to the stop.

I reached my stop and noticed the bus I was waiting for was coming from the opposite direction, this meant I’d have to wait another fifteen minutes outside in this cold windy day. Finally the bus came I got on and got off after five stops.

I was glad I’d have my job done and I’ll be home in a few minutes. I went to the bank the lady asked me about the address of this person, I did not have it. I told her maybe my daughter would know. I called her there was no answer. I called her cell phone still no answer. I was disappointed and decided I’ll take care of it the next day.

As I came out of the bank I saw the bus leaving, oh no I said to myself I’ll have to wait thirty minutes for the next bus.

The wind was stronger than when I first came out of the house, waiting for the bus was difficult, it was cold, my fingers were cold, I did wear gloves, they were not warm enough.

I finally reached home and was glad at least the heating system was working!

DP Daily Prompts: Under the Snow

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

You were caught in an avalanche. To be rescued, you need to make it through the night. What thought(s) would give the strength to go through such a scary, dangerous situation?

The thought of getting caught in an avalanche is dreadful. If it ever happens, although I hope it never does.

My thoughts will be about all the different prayers I have learned to get out of dangerous situations. I’d be repeating those all night and will ask God to forgive me and will promise I’d be more caring towards all my friends, family and neighbors, if I am rescued alive.

I know prayer always helps, in my mind there is  nothing else better than prayer.

DP Daily Prompts: Return Address

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

Yesterday, your pet, inanimate object could read your post. Today, they can write back( thanks for the suggestion,

lifelessons!). Write a post from their point of view ( or pick just any non-verbal creature/ object).

Dear Ranu,

Thank you for your letter. Raphael and I were very good boys yesterday. Rapha is the one who tried to open your closet, I did discourage him but he said, ‘No.’

Rapha did not pull your clothes down on the floor, you still did not give us treats for good behavior.

We tried to sleep all morning, your neighbor was making too much noise and the sun was bright and shiny we had to find out what was happening. this is why we could not sleep.

Rapha was restless, he’s the one who jumped on the piano, he does not listen, I don’t know if he scratched your piano, I am sorry.

Thank you for raising the blinds for us, it was nice and sunny, we didn’t enjoy that much because nothing exciting was happening, and there were no birds we could catch and gobble up, oh yes we are inside how can we catch them.

You always promise to give us treats, but you never do. Humans never tell the truth.

Rapha knows you don’t want him to chew paper, he did it as a protest because you failed to keep your promise.

Rapha wasn’t in a mood to reply, so I did it on behalf of us both.

I hope you still love us.

Your darling felines,

Rapha and Gabriel.

365 Writing Prompts: Community Service

Your entire community– however you define that; your hometown, your neighborhood, your family, your colleagues, is guaranteed to read your blog tomorrow. Write the post you’d like them all to see.

I live in the capital of my province. we have one university here. some of the inhabitants buy houses to rent it to the students, who are from other communities and some are from other provinces and countries  as well.

Memorial university has a wide variety of subjects to choose from and the tuition fees is the lowest, so it attracts many students from various provinces of Canada and other countries.

My house is located close to the university.

I know some of the neighbors, we visit each other regularly. It is a relatively quiet neighborhood except when the students renting the houses have a cause to celebrate. The landlords try their best to inform the students, that it is a residential place and they’re not allowed to be rowdy.

The students try their best but go off the handle and forget the rules, which either results in their leaving the house or if they promise not to be disruptive they’re allowed to stay!

365 Writing Prompts: I am a rock

Is it easy for you to ask for help when you need it ,or do you prefer to rely only on yourself?

It is easy for me to ask for help from people I know.I try to do it myself first if after struggling for a while I’m unable to do the task I think I can do, I ask for help.

Once I tried hard to open a jar of peanut butter, I kept trying but could not. I went to my next door neighbor to see if she could help. She tried and was not successful, it made me feel better, she let her sister who was visiting try, the sister opened it easily. I thought my neighbor and I loosened it which is why the sister was able to do it without trouble.

There are tasks I find difficult to do, such as mowing the lawn and snow shoveling, I let the professionals take care of it.
