Ghazal lyrics by Bahadur Shah Zafar singer Mohammed Rafi translated by unknown, posted by Ranu

Lagta nahin hai dil mera ujrhey dayyar mein :My heart has no repose in this despoiled land

Who has ever felt fulfilled in this futile world?

The nightingale complains about neither the sentinel nor the hunter

Fate had decreed imprisonment during the harvest of spring

Tell these longings to go elsewhere

What space is there for them in this besmirched heart

Sitting on a branch of flowers

The nightingale rejoices

It has strewn thorns in the garden of my heart

I asked for a long life, I received four days

Two passed in desire, two in waiting

The days of life are over

And the evening has fallen

I shall sleep legs outstretched in my tomb

How unfortunate is Zafar !

For his burial

Not even two yards of land he was granted

In the land of his beloved!

This ghazal was written by Bahadur Shah Zafar. He was the last mughal emperor of India. He was a devout Sufi and also an Urdu poet. This ghazal(or poem) was his best.

My heart cannot rest in this destroyed land.

Who can be satisfied in this useless world.

The nightingale does not complain

about the guard or the hunter.

Fate has decided imprisonment

during Spring harvest.

Tell these desires to find

some other home.

There is no room for them

in this dishonored heart.

The nightingale is delighted

sitting on the branch of flowers.

While thorns are strewn

in my heart’s garden.

I wanted  a long life

all I got was four days.

Two I spent wishing  and two waiting.

My days are over

evening is here.

I shall sleep with

outstretched legs in my tomb.

Referring to himself he says,

How unlucky is Zafar!

For his burial,

He could not  even have two yards of

land in his beloved country!

He was exiled to Rangoon(Myanmar where he breathed his last)!

Nazrul Song , singer Firoza post and translation by Ranu

Your tear- filled eyes,

your sari teeming with flowers.

Should I take  flowers or the tears?

I am distracted with anxiety.

Your tear-filled eyes,

your sari teeming with flowers.

If I take  flowers from your hand,

water will disappear from your eyelids.

If I take  tears, love will not blossom.

Your tear-filled eyes,

your sari  teeming with flowers.

When you string the garland,

I long to have it.

When I see your tears for me,

I like it even more.

To avoid losing you ,

I keep myself far away from you.

I leave after helping the bud blossom,

I the restless nightingale.

Your tear-filled eyes,

your sari teeming with flowers.

Should I take flowers or tears?

I am distracted with anxiety.

Your tear-filled eyes,

your sari teeming with flowers!
