365 Writing Posts: The normal

Is being”normal”__whatever that means to you–a good thing , or a bad thing? Neither?

When we think about humans and we give our opinion about a particular person we say he is normal, i.e. physically and mentally sound and healthy.

We do the same thing with plants, animals, insects.

About plants we’ll say, it’s growth is normal, it’s not too large or too small. We always make comparisons, whether it’s an animal or an insect or a human being, we tend to show the difference between each of God’s creation.

As regards humans we do not stop after talking about his, her growth, e.g  physical, somehow we also talk about h/s mental growth.

Mental comes into question when someone cannot cope with the learning that takes place among their peers. We find there is a huge gap in their understanding of the same thing, we conclude the eight year old or whatever age we are dealing with  takes longer to comprehend even the simplest things, immediately whoever is the person teaching puts the person in a group of other kids who are slow.

This division lowers the self esteem of the ones who are in this group. These kids or students who are labelled slow learners are humiliated, they then start to act up and disrupt the class. We usually ignore them and feel contented to keep them aloof from the rest of the students or kids.

These so called slow learners become a problem for the society, they end up dropping out of school, and get into all kinds of trouble. They are without jobs, either they live on social assistance or do whatever they have to for survival. The society calls them abnormal, they are shunned by everyone.

365 writing Prompts: Far from normal

Many of us think of our lives as boringly normal, while others live the high life.Take a step back, and take a look at your life as an outsider might. Now, tell us at least six unique, exciting, or( just plain odd things about yourself).

We all have a different perspective about our life. What I think is normal, someone else may not. My life as I see it is simple, I wake up before sunrise to pray, if I’m up to it I stay up, if I feel my body needs sleep, I go back to sleep. I have, my breakfast, after this I come back to my room turn on my computer, I go to the page to see what the prompts for that day is, I start writing.

Today’s prompt is all about normal, it is something that varies from person to person. I think my life is normal, my neighbor might think it is boring. I’ve heard the word boring,if I define this word all I read is, uninteresting, tedious, dull. To me all these  meanings are foolish.

Can someone honestly tell me writing is dull, uninteresting or tedious. Tedious can have room for it when I am stuck, but I cannot really say it’s uninteresting which reminds me about the fox and the grapes, just because he couldn’t reach the grapes on the tree he declared that the grapes were sour.

Same thing applies to writing I console myself by saying, “It’s uninteresting.”

I consider my life normal, because my days are planned I know exactly how I’ll spend my day. As far as high life goes it’s not normal for me and I do not feel the urge to lead a high life.

I’m not sure I can call it unique, but here are six things about myself: 1. I write every day. 2. I love studying about Iqbal.3. I think these online courses are awesome.4. I spend a part of my time listening to my favorite songs. 5. My daughter and I have two very cute felines. 6. I do not like heavy snowfall, it disrupts my movement, when and if I want to go out, and I am not fond of shoveling.

The above is all about me or part of it.

DP Daily Prompts: Out of Breath

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

We all seem to insist on busy, busy we constantly are.Let’s put things in perspective : tell us about the craziest, busiest, most hectic day you’ve had in the past decade.

I usually am not always so busy that it can be called the craziest, busiest, most hectic day I’ve had. When I have a day which is relatively quiet and peaceful anything added to it even if it’s kind of normal makes it a hectic day for me.

The past week I was in another city,I was trying to find a fall coat, there were many in different stores, but were not exactly appealing to me, some were too pricey, there was one I liked ,they didn’t have my size. I went looking for one from store to store, it was a cold rainy day, I had to go in and out of stores, this was becoming too hectic for me,at the end of the day I was walking faster and faster to catch the subway train to get to the right station.

When I was done running I arrived at the said station, I walked out it was  raining and windy. I wanted to wait , my daughter thought we must get out and start walking, our apartment was nine hundred meters away, which meant swift walking or else we’d be completely drenched, we reached it but had to climb the spiraled staircase of more than thirty stairs. When I reached the front of the door I was breathless!

365 Writing Prompt:A Mystery wrapped in an enigma

Tell us something most people probably don’t know about you.

There is nothing unusual about me, I am as normal as the person next door. I have my likes and dislikes like anyone else. My looks resemble my parents as others do.

My food habits resemble the people where I’m from, it is not different. One difference in my food habit maybe is, there are foods I do not like, the ones I like I can eat day after day without getting bored. The word “bored” is absent from my vocabulary. There were many occasions when I was confused when the kids I taught would say, “We are bored”.

I asked myself Why? There are so many things we can do, why do they say they are bored, is it because they picked up the word from somewhere and think it is cool to say, “I am bored”?

Blue is my favorite color, I always chose blue when I bought clothes for myself. My siblings don’t like my choice of blue all the time, but I’m very stubborn, they were not able to change my mind.

I have very few friends but the ones I have  are for keeps. I’d do anything for them, provided it’s not something unachievable.

I love learning languages, I think it’s an exciting thing to do.

When I watch matches or games, I always pick my favorite otherwise I do not find it interesting. My husband once said, “Why do you have to pick a favorite, enjoy it?”

I love poetry and music I can spend a whole day reading poetry or listening to music. My favorite writers are Tagore and Iqbal.

I have very few hobbies, one is reading novels written by my favorite authors and two is spending time writing for my blog.

365 days Writing Prompt: The normal

Is being “normal”—whatever that means to you —- a good thing or a bad thing? Neither

To me normal means one is physically and mentally sound. I think if a person is normal it is an excellent thing. Think about the two brothers who bombed in the Boston Marathon, killing innocent people , they were not in the right frame of mind, had they been normal they would not have committed such a horrible crime.

When I think about normal the battle of Hydaspes River fought between Alexander and king Porus comes to mind. This battle was won by Alexander and King Porus was taken prisoner. Alexander asked Porus how he wished to be treated . “Treat me O Alexander , like a King” Porus responded. Alexander despite his victory asked the king how he should be treated, it shows Alexander was in his normal frame of mind or else he would have ordered him killed. Porus showed he was normal when he gave the appropriate reply.

I like it when everything is normal, the weather, peoples behavior, when I say normal weather,I mean we don’t have snow in July, snow in December is completely normal.

I visited a store once to look at some of the jewelry on display, I looked at some of them, when I wanted to know what else he had, he turned his back and walked away, this attitude clearly showed his behavior towards the customer was not normal, Would I go back to the store again, absolutely not. This is one of the examples of an abnormal behavior.

Being normal I think is a good thing !

DP Daily Prompt: Now You See Me Ranu’s post http:sabethville.wordpress.com

One morning I decided to go for a walk. I randomly selected a spot. I thought it would be perfect, the place was almost deserted. I was walking along quietly humming one of Tagore’s songs, suddenly I saw a tall figure blocking my movement. At first I was terrified and froze ,I slowly raised my head to look up. There he was with a beard so long,it came up to his waist. He knew he had startled me,he tried to lower his voice, “Woman” he said , “Do you want secret power?”  By this time I was beginning to relax,I didn’t feel threatened by him any more. I asked, “What kind of power?”  “It can help you  appear or disappear”, he said.

I pondered a moment and said ,”Okay, when will I get this power”? “Right this minute if you want.”  I agreed. He  told me to be careful, the power according to him would work from noon  to 4:30 pm. He handed me a silver charm,it had an on and off button. I was told no one must see it. I should always have it on me. I thought it’s not difficult, I can do it. “It should be a secret,” he said.

Then the long bearded fellow disappeared. I wanted to ask some more about the charm. I felt I was on top of the world with this charm. My next move was to use this unbelievable piece of silver. I went to the super market and ordered some groceries, I told the sales man ,I’d pick up at four pm. I clicked my charm to make me disappear and land at the mall. It was very busy, children came in droves to see Santa and also  hand him their wish list. I watched them and loved the interaction between the kids and Santa. No one saw me I could go anywhere in that mall. Then the worst thing happened,in my excitement I forgot to check the time. To my dismay it was 5 pm, it was past the time and the charm won’t work.

I was frantic I kept switching the on/off button. I wanted to be visible, but could not. I sat on one of the bench, all I could do was cry. I prayed for the bearded fellow to appear to get help. It was 9:45,the mall would close in fifteen minutes,I am invisible, and am unable to get my groceries. Five minutes before ten the bearded man appeared. I was ecstatic but he was not, he scolded me for a few seconds and magically transformed me back . I was visible. He asked me, “How did you like your power?” I said, “I am returning your charm,I want to be normal”. The magician disappeared and left me wondering if I made the right decision!

DP Daily Prompt: The Normal Post by Ranu

I checked the dictionary,to find out what is their definition of “Normal”, well surprise, surprise,it says physically or mentally sound. What it means to me,I do not think I’m quite sure.A good thing or a bad thing, depends on who the judge is.

Let me think about physically sound first. It is not easy to know about physical fitness. I maybe fit today, tomorrow I’d find out just the opposite. I heard about a young man, sound bodily, suddenly collapses and lands in the ‘ICU’. So one cannot decide by looking at a person,he/she is sound physically. There have been cases when patients have been sent home with a clean bill of health. Moments later the person is back on the stretcher wheeled hastily to ‘OR’,this is about physical health.

Next is mental health,it is much more complex than the one I just wrote about. We hear about serial killers, outwardly the neighbors see nothing wrong,he is as normal as anyone else. Delve further you find ,he/she is responsible for countless murders. How can it be, he was photographed with the Reagans. There is something wrong with this news.No there isn’t, we overlooked it.

My conclusion is, the word,’Normal’ is not easy to write about. So I leave it to the readers to decide,if they can distinguish between normal and abnormal.I certainly cannot.
