365 Writing Prompts: Back to the future

Anachronism(noun): an error in chronology; a person or thing that’s chronologically out of place, or recount a time when you felt out of place.

There were many occasions when I felt out of place either I was among people who were younger than me or a room full of women much older than I was.

Once I was invited to tea in London,  England, by who I cannot recall,it was arranged by ‘British Council’ because I was a student, studying ‘English as a Foreign Language’, the council was trying to make me get used to my new environment.

I went to this delightful place and found out I was late ,everyone else was drinking their tea and goodies and were immersed in conversation, one gentle lady showed me where I could sit, if she hadn’t I know I would have hidden myself in the corner, biding my time as soon as the opportunity presented itself to get out and walk away. the kind lady did not let it happen. Once she took care of her duty I was left alone to take care of myself.

I looked around, all the ladies were deep in conversation, I felt uneasy there wasn’t one soul whom I could talk to, they looked like fashionable aristocrat ladies wearing their finest hats and gorgeous dresses, I clearly was a misfit, wearing a sari and didn’t have stylish hat on, and to make matters worse I was a student from Bangladesh and much younger than them. Someone gave a cursory look and most certainly informed the ladies, I was the one who arrived late, how unmannerly of me.

At that point I wasn’t in a mood to eat or drink anything, I was anxious to get out of this stuffy environment. At around 4:30 pm they vanished, I was alone I thought I must leave or else someone will tell me the party is over and I must get out of this place.

I  was completely out of place that day, my attire, my age, where I came from, was different, the ladies were not in a mood to strike up a conversation with me, I left keeping in mind I do not have to go to an unknown place full of unfriendly people, to oblige the council!

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

“Young At Heart”

I didn’t think about aging , it is an on going process, everyone gets older everyday.

How will I stay young at heart as I age. I will have to take care of myself, do things that keep me happy. I’d spend my time with younger people .

Read children’s stories, write stories, I don’t know this is all I can think of.

DP Daily Prompt: Four Stars Post By Ranu

I grew up in a large family. My father was an assistant secretary in the ministry of defense,my mom was a housewife.I was a very curious child. My Dad or Mom or my siblings, always had to explain in detail, my why questions. My eldest brother was amused by my constant questions.More than once he reminded me that, “curiosity killed a cat”.It did not make any difference. I did not change.

I don’t know how old I was when I started going to school. I probably did okay in school. My Dad did not hire a tutor for me. He did hire one for my older siblings. I had to get up early to catch the school bus.It came to our gate at 6 a.m. My teachers gave me a lot of homework. One day I was unable to complete it. I did not know what the punishment will be,so I stayed home. That morning the bus driver kept on honking,I knew Dad will ask,’Ma Ranu ‘, aren’t you going to school?’I quickly said,”Dad I am cold”. My sister yelled,’it is not a reason to skip school’. I thought Dad doesn’t mind, who cares what Khuku thinks.

Dhaka (Photo credit: eGuide Travel) I had to think of an excuse fast. So I said, ‘Abba I am cold’. My big sister would yell out and say, ‘That’s no reason to skip school’. I did not reply. I thought as long as Dad has no problem with it,why should I care what Khuku thinks.

My Dad died suddenly,we had to move to our original homeland,Bangladesh. We were not thrilled with the move and no one cared what we thought. I finished school and took admission in a local college. I attended it for two years. I told my big Sister I want to study in Holy Cross College in Dhaka. Arrangements were made and I was there another two years and completed my Under  Grad. degree.

My next move was to get admission to do masters degree.I wanted to study Economics,my sister thought I was not hardworking enough to pass the course. I took admission to study history. I did well and took admission for B.ed. course. After completing the course,I taught for three years. I then applied for a scholarship, fortunately I was successful. I studied in London,England for a year.

I got married and came to Canada.I am a Canadian citizen.I live in St. John’s, Newfoundland,Canada. Here ends my boring story.
