365 Writing Prompts: Fifteen Credits

Another school semester will soon begin. If you’re in school, are you looking forward to starting classes? If you’re out of school, what do you miss about it— or are you glad those days are over?

I am not in school I took care of my studies a while ago. Sometimes I miss the atmosphere of school. I recall one of my profs was quite strange, when we’d see him coming towards us we’d be ready to wish him “Salaam”, meaning peace be on you, our words would be stuck in our throats, he’d turn around and look the other way, this was in the university. as usual we’d talk among ourselves about how strange he was.

Then there was Sr. Joseph Mary in college, before I could wish her,’good morning, afternoon or evening,’ depending on the time of day.

She’d quickly remind me, “Chaman, I hope you won’t go to your uncle’s house for the week-end.”

I’d say nothing and try to move on,then the question is louder,’Did you hear me my dear?’

I’d have no choice but to say, ‘Yes Sr. Joseph Mary.’

In London it was Prof. Baird, he’d wish me before I opened my mouth, “Good Morning, Miss Sabeth, how are you?”

My reply, “I’m fine Mr. Baird.”

I’d then quickly go into the classroom and open my phonetics book and pretend to study, so Prof. Baird wouldn’t ask any further questions.

It was a carefree life in school, after classes depending on where I was, I’d either go straight to my residence or in London I’d go to one of the stores, it was  Selfridges ,  I loved checking all the interesting things, I’d go from floor to floor it was my way of spending time, I dreaded going back to the residence because I knew I’d be homesick.

I miss my Profs., Sister Joseph Mary and also some of my classmates.

Now I registered for online courses, it’s stress-free, I see no one and no one sees me. I love the fact I do not have to dress up to be in this school. I’m studying about poet and philosopher Iqbal and enjoying a lot. The best part is we have no exam. We get a certificate at the end of a course.

I am using a video of Mary Hopkins, the lyrics  , “those were the days”, although we didn’t hang out in the tavern or drank, what is similar is we were young, and we never thought our days of fun will be over. Making fun of our teachers was one thing that made us laugh the most.

365 Writing Prompts:Origin Story

Why did you start your blog? Is that still why you blog,or has your site gone in a different direction than you planned?

I started using the computer for my online course, I was busy studying and answering questions at the end of a lesson. One day our facilitator introduced us to the blog of one of our fellow participants, before this I had no idea what blogging meant. When I read his post I was interested, I asked our facilitator, was it possible for me to start blogging. His reply was positive.

I asked my daughter how I could start this, she looked up and found WordPress the best for me. I started slow, I was a novice,I had no idea what to write, I started with short posts and gradually wrote about different things.

I was lucky one of my course participants encouraged me to translate Tagore’s poems. I wasn’t confident but rather than say I cannot do it, I took it as a challenge. I have translated a number of poems of Tagore, and the participant took time to read it and wrote his comment which helped and encouraged me a lot.

I did not plan what I should do next, I registered to do some prompts, I still write them, each morning I wait for the topic and write, I have a small number of people who read my posts, their encouraging comments keeps me going!

365 days Writing Prompt: RSVP

Plan the ultimate celebration for the person you’re closest to, and tell us about it. Where is it? Who’s there? What’s served? What happens?

On May 9th 2014 an awesome book was published, it took the author over two years to complete writing this book, his hard work paid off as this book earned him the fame, every writer dreams of.

He is a gifted writer, he is humble and has a very sweet disposition. I came to know him accidentally while spending time to do some research on the great Philosopher and poet Iqbal. From him I found out he was offering  an online course on Iqbal, my prayers were answered I immediately registered for the course,or he kindly registered me and even paid for the registration. I was impressed who would do this for a complete unknown, it showed how generous he was.

Since then I registered for all the courses he offered. After a few courses I realized how awesome he was. His latest book gave me reason to celebrate his most recent accomplishment.

My plan is to organize the celebration, where he lives now. I intend to invite all those people who have encouraged him to write this book.

I’d get a catering service to serve the kinds of food he likes. He once mentioned he missed biriyani, he hasn’t eaten it since he left home. This particular dish is served with yoghurt salad and some Seekh kebabs, I’m almost sure he’d like it.

Dessert will be light, after a heavy dinner a light dessert will be served to all the invited guests.

After dinner, two guests who know the author will be invited to say a few words about him.

Before leaving the author would be requested to sign the copies of his book bought by some of his fans!

DP Daily Prompt: Can’t Get It Out Of My Head

Have you ever become obsessed with something? Tell us about something that captivates your attention like nothing else.

Ever since I started taking online course of the great Philosopher and Poet Iqbal my heart and soul is captivated by his poetry and his philosophical outlook on God and Man .

In one of his poem’s he says: Man must heighten his self hood to such an extent so that before formulating the destiny of man, God would ask ,”What would you rather be.”

Secondly he says,: Rest is all but impossible in this workplace of nature.Change alone is changeless in this world.”He says in another poem “The disintegrating river bank said: Though long have I lived , Alas I have not discovered who I am. An ecstatic wave rippled past swiftly and said: I am if I move :If I move not I die.”Because a ripple cannot exist unless it moves . This is the secret of existence.

Again he says , one should continue to have longing for development. He thinks it is not enough to achieve something.Do not rest on your laurels he says; be restless! He encourages us to constantly yearn and desire. He says,”I would not exchange my Man’s station for all the splendors of Godhead.”

I would rather be Man than become God, he says , some might say he was a heretic. He thinks God is perfection, to him perfection has no potential for growth. Therefore it stagnates, perfection cannot develop anymore. So I would not like to be God, I would like to remain as a man.

About the theme of constant battle and self-testing he says: Life is to make a pearl from your own inner oyster.”

On   the attack on color or race he says : “We are born of this garden, and stem from a single branch,we are nurtured by the same Springtide’s bounty.– the same spring for all flowers of all colors.”

I truly believe if we as human beings overlooked our differences and worked with what is similar in us, we can build a safe and happy planet for us and our future generations. This thought has captivated my mind ever since I started the online courses.

One day I started thinking of doing something to keep me busy. I surfed the internet and found out, Iqbal Academy was offering online courses on the poet and philosopher Iqbal. I was very happy. I thought it was a very good opportunity for me.

It would help me to know about the poet.  You see when I was a student in college, there was nothing about him in our course of studies.  I knew a few lines of one of his poems. They were awesome. I thought I’d be able to learn more about him.

I jumped at the opportunity and registered for the course. It was in 2011.  I am still doing it and enjoying it. I am trying hard to go back  and study as I used to. It is a very good course. It covers subjects like religion, philosophy. poetry, prose . We’ve also studied about Rumi , Goethe the German poet, Shakespeare and many others.

Studying about Iqbal has opened other doors, which I never would have tried.  I started blogging, translating, the work of  another great poet. Tagore. I knew a few things about him, now I know a lot more.   I am never bored,I always have something to do.

I am also trying to write something for ,SPEAKEASY. My participation in SPEAKEASY is awesome. I am getting to know a lot of good and gifted writers.

I now feel joining the online course was the best idea for me.  I came into contact with bright and intelligent people. I am enjoying interacting with a lot of interesting and friendly people. I am giving my brain enough work out to prevent it from getting rusty.

DP Daily Prompt: Intense! Post by Ranu

Sir Muhammad Iqbal

I registered to do an online course on Iqbal the poet, philosopher.Little did I know other participants had studied about Iqbal when they merely learned to talk and walk of course.

I told myself how difficult can it be,he is another poet  and philosopher. The last word woke me up.he is a philosopher too, what do these guys do they, excuse me for writing this,” They only philosophize about everything, speculate, theorize. The last words in the previous sentence, started unraveling my brain.

I began talking to myself, now ‘Ranu’ ,my dear you needed to think before you registered yourself to rub shoulders with these knowledgeable participants.Things were getting quite intense. I couldn’t take myself out of this mess, especially when my fees was paid by the kind facilitator. It was something very unexpected. This kindness made me sweat some more. “I am trapped someone please help me”,I felt like the lion chained, was it a lion or elephant? whatever, one of those big shots, who was released by a lowly mouse.

Hey, I’ll be the mouse in this story,I thought I will gnaw anyone who threatens me. But my teeth are not sharp enough, perhaps in this case my words can be used as a substitute.

Whenever I think of the word “SUBSTITUTE’,all I can think of are the teachers who had to replace me and face my naughty kids in school for only a day.

What I have signed up for is going to last a year maybe two or even three. I shall not play the counting game it’s already making me dizzy.

I sat in front of my daughter’s computer and started typing my answer for the first lesson. I was up till midnight,my daughter was worried ‘Mom’,she called,’Are you all right’? I couldn’t say,’I am having a nightmare’!

So ended  my first assignment,it was intense, but I made it through!

DP Daily Prompt: Silver Linings Post by Ranu

Sir Muhammad Iqbal

Sir Muhammad Iqbal (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

There are quite a few things happened in my life, which I can  say are ugly or distasteful .I find solace in thinking, maybe something good will come out of it.

I spent days and months watching hideous shows.I did not learn anything from them,I only wondered why do they waste their time creating something that is teaching nothing good but everything ugly and repulsive. All these I watched on YouTube. Suddenly I saw an actor, singing a song,I loved the tune,I continued to watch it. I wanted to know who he was, I read about him and my interest in this person, led me to another famous personality, his name is Allama Mohammad Iqbal, I was able to get all the information about him through the internet. It is a tool where  you can get a lot of good and bad things. It depends on our preference. I took online courses offered through Iqbal Academy.I was delighted I was learning something useful. My time was used wisely.

I no longer watch shows to pass my time. I am actually gaining knowledge I didn’t have. From online courses I added blogging in my list.I’m having a whale of a time.I read posts by other bloggers,I get recipes posted by them, gorgeous photographs by bloggers and a whole bunch of things.Everyday I learn something new from WordPress and from bloggers. I can definitely see the silver linings now more than ever. The encouraging comments from bloggers  helps  me to keep on writing.

DP Daily Prompt: It’s a Text,Text,Text, Text World, Post by Ranu

I will begin by using the proverb,”Pen is Mightier than the Sword”. The question is ,How Do I Communicate differently online than in person? I will say this first,I’ve  been  thinking about the daily prompt, I have chosen to do daily.Whenever I write these,I am slowly exposing my personality,my likes, dislikes and other things.Since I’ve signed up for it,I’ll continue to participate in the daily prompt. Today’s prompt is about ,How I manage to communicate online. I have some experience doing it since I make my feelings known, when listening to a song or watching movies on YouTube. Sometimes I do not comment when I read the comments of others who are not hesitant to use abusive language to make their feelings known. The other experience is my online course where I have to answer questions or write a comment.I am in the course since the latter part of 2011. Next in line is blogging ,this has given me tremendous opportunity to write and comment to my blog followers.

Email although last on my list is the one I enjoy most. Here I do communicate a lot.I don’t hesitate to let my feelings known. If I think I am too harsh ,I apologize immediately. But my friend at the other end writes back and let’s me know it’s okay. So my only way is through written form. It keeps me busy.

I am against cell phones,I don’t have one ,which means I do not use text messaging.
