Daily Prompt: Brainwave

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

What’s the better idea you’ve ever had? Regale us every detail of the idea_ the idea itself, where it came to you, and the problem it solved.

The best idea I ever had was when my friend Robert started blogging, and I wanted to find out what blogging was and could I try it as well. I asked my good friend, he encouraged me and said, he was thinking of telling me to pick up the craft of blogging.

In the beginning there were a few roadblocks I had to deal with. For instance what can I write about, another friend stepped in and suggested it would be a neat idea if I translated Tagore’s poems. I was thrilled but had to tread cautiously. Yes I knew the language as it happened to be my mother tongue, there was a ‘but’ factor lingering in my brain.

Was I capable of taking a risk like that. I did not admit I was scared, at heart I was. This task was not easy, I had no experience translating.

I started with a short one and slowly I was feeling confident. I translated several poems and my friend encouraged me all along.

From time to time I found other things to do. I discovered the every day daily post. I read the prompts and began to write.

From prompts I went to five sentence fiction writing. Each week we were given a one word prompt, we were expected to write a story based on the prompt.I wrote stories for a while. It was discontinued.

I looked for other things to do. I joined the 101 writing course offered by WordPress. It lasted for four weeks. I loved it, I was able to keep myself busy.

The recent poetry course offered by WordPress was one I loved the most. I loved to read, recite memorize poetry, I did not have the experience of writing it.

I’m glad I joined blogging , I’m gaining experience writing things I haven’t done before.

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

What change, big or small, would you like your blog  to make in the world?

I’d like to make some small changes in my blog. I’m hoping to add some photographs taken by me, I have thought about writing some recipes and a bit of poetry to enliven my blog.

I have read and translated quite a few poems, song lyrics mostly by Tagore. I feel why not I try to write some poetry, to broaden my horizon.

I do take photographs occasionally, these days Gabriel and Raphael the two felines gives me ample scope to write about them and also I’d like to focus a bit of time about their behavior, good and bad.

I’ll see how it goes, I would also write the daily prompts, they are always interesting.

What a great idea I thought, I leafed through the pages of Tagore’s collection of poems book. He wrote about nature, humans, animals, love and many more, then I found his song lyrics which were out of this world.

I thought surely the bloggers have heard about Tagore and also know he was a “Nobel” prize winner in literature. Who wouldn’t be interested to read the translations of his work.

365 Writing prompts: Release me

Tell us about the blog post you were most nervous to publish– and what it was like to to set it free.

It was the first time I had attempted to translate a poem of Tagore. I was advised by one of my classmates in the online course to translate Tagore’s poetry.

He said it because I am a Bengali and that it should be easy for me to do the work.

Over the years I have read Tagore’s poetry and picked one’s I loved because of their rhythm and the beautiful words the poet used to describe nature. I memorized them and frequently repeated them, it gave me a kind of delight I could never explain.

When I was confronted with the task of translating Tagore’s poetry into English it gave me  the jitters, I never thought in my wildest dream I was adept to try it. Rather than tell my friend I was incapable, because the hidden pride in me wouldn’t let me admit the fact.

I took out Tagore’s collection of poems, I picked one that I had recited as a child, I started translating it, it took me a long time to complete it, then the editing, reading and rereading began. I came to a point where I was tired of it.

When I was convinced I have done my best, I nervously clicked the publish button.

Then I waited to see the comment from my friend. He was very generous in his comment and I was ecstatic, I had crossed the first hurdle!

365 Writing Prompts:Origin Story

Why did you start your blog? Is that still why you blog,or has your site gone in a different direction than you planned?

I started using the computer for my online course, I was busy studying and answering questions at the end of a lesson. One day our facilitator introduced us to the blog of one of our fellow participants, before this I had no idea what blogging meant. When I read his post I was interested, I asked our facilitator, was it possible for me to start blogging. His reply was positive.

I asked my daughter how I could start this, she looked up and found WordPress the best for me. I started slow, I was a novice,I had no idea what to write, I started with short posts and gradually wrote about different things.

I was lucky one of my course participants encouraged me to translate Tagore’s poems. I wasn’t confident but rather than say I cannot do it, I took it as a challenge. I have translated a number of poems of Tagore, and the participant took time to read it and wrote his comment which helped and encouraged me a lot.

I did not plan what I should do next, I registered to do some prompts, I still write them, each morning I wait for the topic and write, I have a small number of people who read my posts, their encouraging comments keeps me going!

Rabindranath Tagore won the Nobel prize for literature. It is the first Nobel prize won by Asia. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I heard about Rabindranath Tagore when I first came to Bangladesh. He was a very popular poet. There used to be recitation contest in schools, the most used poems were those written by Tagore.  My sister’s friend played a Tagore song to entertain me. As soon as I heard the song,I sat up and listened, the friend knew I liked the song, she asked me if I wanted to hear it again I nodded my head, she watched me and kept on playing the song. After playing a number of times, she asked me if I wanted to hear it again, and also reminded me she had played the song thirteen times already.I was embarrassed and said no. Imagine hearing the same song thirteen times. I managed to remember the lyrics and the tune. I had no trouble singing the song.

Since that time I read Tagore’s novels, poems and songs. When I started blogging one of my online course participant advised me to translate Tagore’s poems.I have translated quite a few.

We, Bengalees are very proud of our poet. Thanks to YouTube I am able to listen to his songs.
