365 Writing Prompts: Million-dollar-question

Why do you blog?

First of all, it gives me something to do, or my brain will start to rust. I get the opportunity to read other bloggers’ posts. It makes me think, when I see the prompts   and write my post,  I enjoy reading the feedback left by bloggers who read it.

The most important thing I feel is the interaction with different bloggers. I’ve discovered some bloggers who are very good photographers, some write poetry, others excel in describing their environment.

In the few years I’m blogging I’ve realized I have learned a lot about cooking, some share their recipes, so we can try and see if we like the food.

Writing 101: fifteen minutes free writing

The clock is adjusted , I am ready to write. I am going on a journey, the sun is shining, the day is looking bright. I will follow the sun and see where I will end up.

It’s an early morning sun, the birds are flying about welcoming the beautiful day and I am walking breathing in the lovely pure air. I see a small hut yonder, will I go to see who lives there, yes my mind is made up.I am walking the path seems endless, if I was Tagore I’d make up a poem for everyone to read. I cannot, although I love reading poems and memorizing them. I failed to develop the skill of writing poetry.

I should not be distracted my aim is the hut, the little one. How much longer is the path I ask myself, who knows I’ve never walked along this path.

Wait now I’m almost there, I see a little boy playing with his spin top, it’s a very inexpensive toy, I tell you truthfully the pleasure you get from this little man made device is equal to none. I’m distracted again, I was talking about the boy.Oh look he is waving out to me, I must find out why.

Here I am he is showing me his top, he tells me he got it last night before he went to bed. This is his being good gift, he wants me to play with him, Okay I say,” but I cannot spin it like you , can you teach me?”

The boy replies, “it’s easy , I will teach you.”

I spent a full twenty minutes but could not spin it the way he did.

Time’s up  the clock says!

DP Daily Prompt:

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

Switching my blog with someone  else for a week seems like an interesting idea. I am really not sure who I can switch with , the ones I am thinking about may not like to do it, some write mostly poetry, others have their own style of writing, the subjects they are interested in may not be what I’d like to do.

A week is too long, I’d prefer to be able to switch for a day, see if we like the idea, if not we can easily go back to writing on our own  blog, this way  the interruption is only for a day.

365 Writing Prompts: Blogging

When I started blogging I knew nothing about it. I read a post written by Robert another blogger and wondered if I should try as well. I had no idea how to begin I was helped by Akhtar Waseem Dar, he suggested to start translating some of Tagore’s Poems because I am a Bengali and know the language.

It wasn’t easy, as a young child poetry was my best subject, I read all kinds of poetry written by famous poets. I learned English, Bengali and Urdu in school. I learned to read, write and speak in these languages. Since Bengali is my mother tongue, I had more opportunities to read Bengali poems written by famous poets.

I loved Tagore’s poems, he wrote a lot of poems for children, one of them was: Brishti paurhey tapur tupur : meaning Rain is falling drip drop. This was the first one I translated, Akhtar Bhai(Bhai means brother in Bengali and Urdu) I use brother to show respect. He read the translation and encouraged me a lot. He thought I did a good job. I began to feel confident, I continued to translate Tagore’s poems for a while, then I switched to his song lyrics and started translating them as well. All this time Akhtar Bhai continued to encourage me. There were times I felt insecure, I didn’t know if my translation was worth reading. I’d let my daughter read it before posting, she’d read it and say: “Mom I like it.” this encouraged me more.

Now Robert whom I’ve known from my online courses is a great help, he reads everything I write and always writes very valuable and encouraging comment.

Then there is Khurram A.Shafique, a writer I’ve known through online courses, he is also the facilitator of the course. I address him as brother. He has been very helpful like a real brother. I feel fortunate to have these three awesome individuals encouraging me.

I cannot remember how but along the way I met Leslie Moon, she is a very gifted poet , I love reading her poetry, I write my comment most of the time, sometimes I’m not sure what to write.

I had once mentioned about not having enough readers of my post, she encouraged me to read posts written by other bloggers. I do read some of the posts and leave my comment. This is how I met Indira.

I am happy I have written and posted quite a few translations, stories, a few poems.  I love reading and memorizing poems but writing them regularly is not one of my strong points, so I leave it for Leslie to write and me to enjoy 🙂

DP Daily Prompt: Last Words

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

You have the chance to write one last post before you stop blogging forever.Write it.

This is a very interesting prompt as far as I’m concerned. I’m a blogger for a little over two years, there is not a whole lot I can write about my experience, I must admit I appreciate the opportunity of writing, this is something I did not think about. I was not so confident about my writing skills when I started, a few of my friends gave me the courage I needed.

I cannot claim I am a great writer but I do claim blogging has in many ways improved my lack of confidence. I look forward to the prompts every morning, some are confusing, others help me to write something.

I am not afraid to write a fiction whenever I have to,about poems my feeling is cautious, I do not consider myself a poet at all. I love reading poetry.

My favorite poets are Tagore, Wordsworth, Longfellow, Iqbal, Shelley and many others. Every now and then I read their poems, I do  not try to write poems, I am of the opinion I’m not natural in this Art.

I have written and published a few poems and posted it. They are very simple.

I like writing stories and publishing them. This is one aspect of blogging I like the most, I can write anything without fear that my post may  not be published.

My conclusion is I love blogging, I have something to do daily, I am not bored and I look forward to doing the prompts that WordPress provides for us.

DP Daily Prompts: Brain Power

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

Let’s assume we do, in fact, use only 10% of our brain. If you could unlock the remaining 90%, what would you do with it?

This morning I thought I had to use all of my brainpower to write something to use my time. I was absolutely sure I was using all 100 % of it ,the result was a dismal useless writing which I dared to submit.

If you at WordPress think  I use only 10 % of it every day or assume I do, what happens to the remaining 90%? Does it store as fat like everything else we do not use?

This morning I did need the 90% of my brain to write something worth reading.

All right I’m seriously thinking now what I’d do with the 90% of my brain if I could unlock it. I’d use it to write poetry the kind Tagore wrote, with him gone there has to be someone who should inherit his gift. I’d like to be the one.

The only problem is during Tagore’s time everything in nature was wonderful , the blue sky, the bright sun the forests full of trees, the clear as crystal rivers and oceans lakes and what have you, healthy people, fresh fruits and vegetables.

All that seems to be missing, pollution is the biggest problem, our water is impure, skies are full of smog, and variety of diseases are rampant.

Sure I’d have to write about our planet now, I’d have to give a very grim picture which no one will be interested to read.

Besides how do I know that the 90% of my brain is usable, considering our environment, the food we eat, the air we breathe, I think out of 90% maybe only 50% can be used. I’m sorry but I have to be honest.

If I could use some of it maybe I’ll try to use it to teach the inhabitants of our planet there is still time to improve the  air we breathe, water we drink,  and food we eat!

DP Daily Prompt: Recently Acquired

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

What’s the most important( or interesting, or unexpected) thing about blogging you know today that you didn’t know a month ago.

I started blogging over two years ago. I had no idea what it was or what the word meant, fortunately a participant from my online course started blogging. I read his post and thought how remarkable, one can actually write posts on different subjects and people take time to read it and write their comments. This is awesome I whispered to myself. Then it occurred to me can I write something too,and will other bloggers read my post?

I asked my online course facilitator if I also could  start blogging like Robert? He said,”yes you should.”

I asked my daughter she signed me up with WordPress, according to her it is the best one. I started blogging in June 2012.

What I learned is unbelievable, writing posts, poetry or prose anything goes. Then there are prompts supplied by WordPress daily, which is awesome, it requires a little bit of thinking, once I got used to it, I wrote as much as my brain would co-operate, sometimes a whole lot,  other times not so much.

I sometimes wonder about my blogger friend Leslie and Sonya, I don’t know how they come up with such great poems, my writing looks pale compared to theirs, I’m contented with what I can do. You know everyone cannot do as well as Wordsworth, Shakespeare or William Henry Davies, I certainly am not in their league, I enjoy it, thinking I must be thankful for what I can do.

The above is my story of blogging, my thanks to Robert for showing me the way, to Leslie who is always encouraging me.I’m grateful to my friends, who read my posts regardless of how good or bad they are, only because Ranu wrote it and we must continue to follow her blog,is I think what motivates them!

365 Writing Prompts: Ebb and flow

Our blogs morph over time, as interest shifts and life happens. Write a post for your blog but three years in the future.

The way things are going in the blogging world,I’m not sure what I’ll do three years in the future.I might turn into a poet, because I’m translating so many poems of Tagore, this is one option, I’m also interested in photography, if I start from this moment I might turn into a half decent photographer, in the words of George Bernard Shaw,”You never can tell.”

Chances are good I may pick up the art of writing poetry, and also photography, these two things may look different from what I’ve been writing since I joined “WordPress.”

365 Writing Prompts: Fly on the wall

If you could be a “fly on the wall” anywhere at any time in history, where and when would you choose?

“Fly on the wall”, I would love to be at the time of Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal Emperor in India.

Bahadur Shah Zafar  was the last of the mughal Emperors. He was an emperor at a time when the condition of the country was at its lowest ebb. His last days in his beloved land was difficult. He was accused of killing European women and children. There were charges laid against him which it was claimed would last till the world lasted.

He was frail and gaunt when he was threatened he’d be killed if he tried to escape. The Mughal emperor came out from the resting place of his ancestor after a long wait, one of unimaginable tragedy, hardship and humiliation.

I would like to be a fly on the wall when Bahadur Shah Zafar came to court at 11 am with his lawyer. How he tried to explain by hand gestures and his voice to impress the court of his innocence. It didn’t work, he was exiled to Rangoon now known as Myanmar.

He was a poet and spent his time writing poetry. One of the ones I liked was the one he wrote while he was in exile the following is the English translation  from Urdu:

I had requested for a long life, a life of four days, two passed by in pining, and two in waiting.

How unlucky is Zafar ! he couldn’t get two yards of land in his beloved land.

My life has no ray nof light , I bring no solace to heart or eye, out of dust again, I am of no use to anyone.

I came to the world what did I see ? whatever it was it was like a dream. Man is moulded from clay but I saw him as a bubble of water!

Here is the song posted by me, Ranu.

365 Writing Prompt:A Mystery wrapped in an enigma

Tell us something most people probably don’t know about you.

There is nothing unusual about me, I am as normal as the person next door. I have my likes and dislikes like anyone else. My looks resemble my parents as others do.

My food habits resemble the people where I’m from, it is not different. One difference in my food habit maybe is, there are foods I do not like, the ones I like I can eat day after day without getting bored. The word “bored” is absent from my vocabulary. There were many occasions when I was confused when the kids I taught would say, “We are bored”.

I asked myself Why? There are so many things we can do, why do they say they are bored, is it because they picked up the word from somewhere and think it is cool to say, “I am bored”?

Blue is my favorite color, I always chose blue when I bought clothes for myself. My siblings don’t like my choice of blue all the time, but I’m very stubborn, they were not able to change my mind.

I have very few friends but the ones I have  are for keeps. I’d do anything for them, provided it’s not something unachievable.

I love learning languages, I think it’s an exciting thing to do.

When I watch matches or games, I always pick my favorite otherwise I do not find it interesting. My husband once said, “Why do you have to pick a favorite, enjoy it?”

I love poetry and music I can spend a whole day reading poetry or listening to music. My favorite writers are Tagore and Iqbal.

I have very few hobbies, one is reading novels written by my favorite authors and two is spending time writing for my blog.
