Is political correctness a useful concept, or does it stifle honest discussion? What is political correctness?

I’ve often wondered about what is politically correct. The definition I got is : agreeing with the idea that people should be careful to not use language or behave in such a way that could offend a particular group of people. This makes sense but I’m not sure if this is practiced in all cases, if it does I’m okay with it.

If it stifles an honest discussion I think it should be looked at and changes should be made.

I’ve read in an article, it was believed the students were encouraged not to be a scientist because there were not many jobs for them. Here is where I think it stifles an honest discussion, there is another individual who thinks that students should not be told that there is no job for them after they complete the course. Telling the students the truth about  the job market is wrong, because his lab will  be empty. To me if someone is interested only about himself and does not think of the students is wrong, the political correctness in this situation is hurting a group of people, I think it’s only useful if it’s beneficial to all.

I can say, political correctness if one is a firm believer ,stifles honest discussion. If we are bound by political correctness ,we cannot exhibit our genuine concerns. Lot of feelings that come from the heart are suppressed. It leaves me feeling disappointed.
