The Daily Post: Sweet Dreams(Are Made of This)

What is the best dream you’ve ever had? Recount it for us in all its ethereal glory. If no dreams stands out in your memory, recount your worst nightmare. Leave no frightening detail out.

I did not have any sweet dreams. One morning I was sleeping and was lazy to wake up and say my morning prayer. Suddenly I heard someone saying, “Ranu get up and say your prayer.”

I was scared I was out of my bed that instant, washed myself and  got my prayer rug ready  to pray.

Write a review of your life –or the life someone close to you –as if it were a movie or a book.

He was my younger brother, his name was Nurul, my father named him. As a little boy he seemed bright, but we could not gauge his brilliance before he started going to school.

On the instruction of my eldest brother I registered him In “Our Lady of Fatima Convent”, none of us took the time to teach him the alphabets or the numbers. His classmates were well ahead of him.

One day his classmate who sat next to him  was far ahead of him in Mathematics and Bengali, Nurul requested him to teach the numbers, it took him probably a month, he was able to go ahead in every subject of his classmate from whom he learned the numbers.

From that month onward he was speeding along in each subject, no one could beat him in any subject. When he was in grade six he asked me to pray for him for he was planning to compete in the sixth grade scholarship exam. I remember I stayed quiet, I did not give him too much hope, I had no idea about these exams.

When the results came out he was one of the boys who was successful. Two years later he competed in the eighth grade scholarship, he quietly asked me if I thought he will get the scholarship. I only said “I do not know how good you are, I can only find out by asking you  some questions from History.”

It was the subject I took for my post graduate course.I was clearly amazed how much he knew,it was  as much as I did, and he was only in grade eight.

I told him then , “If you know this much in History, I have no doubt you will get the scholarship.”

He stood first in the scholarship exam.

After that success he never looked back. he kept doing better and better in grades nine and ten. In the final board exam, he scored three hundred out of three hundred in general Math,Additional math and compulsory math. His scores were unbelievable in every subject. He secured first place in the exam in the whole district.

He chose to study in Dhaka city, he registered in the catholic college. In those days there was stiff competition between the catholic college and the government college students. Unfortunately the government college principal made it his mission to stop the catholic college students do better in the final exams. Before this the catholic college students  always topped the list in the final exams. The year my brother was in the final it changed, the government college students did better.

My brother was heart broken, yet  he continued his studies and successfully completed his masters degree in Physics.

He then came to Canada to work on his PhD.  in Space  Physics, he was unable to complete it as he fell victim to cancer and could not survive!

DP Daily Prompt: Standstill Post by Ranu

Time is important in our lives, yet we aren’t concerned when we waste it. Whether we  do so by idle gossip, lazing around, watching television,or nothing at all. Despite the fact we keep hearing the words “Time and Tide waits for no one!”

If “Time” itself gives us the opportunity by standing still, for just a moment, what on earth can we tweak in,at that precise moment? Personally,I’d pray to God to forgive me for all the time I’ve wasted doing unimportant things when I had the time to thank Him for being so kind to me , providing me with : food, shelter, all the necessities of life and above all friends and awesome people I met in this life!

DP Daily Prompt: Drawing Blank Post by Ranu

I seldom take part in any heated discussion. So drawing blank is irrelevant. However I did draw blank in my masters exam. Upon the advice of my roommate I stayed up till 2 a.m .in the morning of one of the exams.I was feeling sick,I did not have enough sleep. The invigilator handed me the question paper.I glanced from numbers 1 to 10. I was required to answer six of them. Well six, I could not understand any of them.

So I started to panic.I promised  that instant.I will never let anyone interfere with my regular sleep hours. The question was,I said to myself,’what I’ll do to that roommate for her bad advice ,is not the immediate issue, how will I deal with all these questions staring at me’,they were telling me, ‘answer six or else failure will be knocking your door’.

I pulled myself together, started reading the questions slowly, telling myself,’Ranu never mind the sleep, you were prepared to handle this, you have studied enough, now take a deep breath and concentrate’. I said a little prayer my Mom  taught me for emergencies. I started praying,I promised God I’ll never make such a foolish mistake again. It calmed me . I grabbed my pen and started writing. One by one my brain was spitting out the answers as if by magic. I finished the four hour exam in two hours.I did not want to review. I handed my answer sheets to the Prof. who had his sharp stinging eyes on me. ‘Are you finished, have you checked everything’?   ‘Yes Sir I have’ was my reply.

They may not wow you by the way they cook,

they will surely impress you by their gorgeous look.

I wait for their show every day,

at four pm sharp they are visible on TV,

their opening lines are always the same,

I wait patiently to hear the name

of the Chef they will cook for that day.

‘We will cook for the French Chef today

we hope there are  not too  many disasters we pray’.

Christina sliced the carrots too big,

Anna decided to fix it quick!

They completed their dishes on time,

The Chef was accompanied by two other chefs.

The mention of a French Chef gave them the jitters,

the addition of two more caused them to litter.

Mon Dieu ,Mon Dieu cried all three,

why such a mess ,heaven help ye.

The dinner went well, they were praised a lot,

Christina and Anna began dancing on the spot!
